  • Salt Sand & Cliffs Overland Adventure, part 2 of 3. We have reached the spectacular Bilbunya dunes (standing 120m in height) the most remote so far on this adventure. None of us know it yet but something is about to change our trip dramatically.

Great Video again Ronny, I think the best & most poignant part of the video was your very serious & sobering talk on being stranded in the Outback & the importance of staying with the vehicle. Your breakdown highlighted the fact that even the most experienced & well prepared expedition can run into an unexpected mechanical failure, if anything the breakdown is in my opinion one of the most important & memorable videos from a safety point of view.

My favorite trip still, is the one where it all went wrong. I had a melted injector lede 50 miles from the nearest person on a trail that wouldn't have worked to be towed out of. We got it going but we lost our destinations after that. amazing how quickly a trip turns epic.

  • @mrjohnsonclarke

    Great vid! Thanks again.
I can relate to that 'bad-dream' feeling.
When we did our last Cape York trip (3rd trip) my Defender drank water at Nolans Brook through a flaw in the intake that I had overlooked, it bent a conrod that snapped a few K's later down the track, throwing my crank out through my sump and cracking holes in both sides of the block..
With 3 kids, missus and a camp trailer we were lucky we had people around to help us.
There were many other disasters that we experienced on that same trip despite the preparation.
I had the u-bolts on the trailer snap twice. Ran out of fuel on the PDR in the donor vehicle due to a fuel gauge fault. My niece bitten by a snake (she is fine). Snapped an axle in the donor vehicle and we had to recover (snatch) the Jardine river ferry to the shore due to it breaking down.
In conclusion, interestingly, I wouldn't want to change a thing about that trip, it all provides an exciting story to tell...

    • @mrjohnsonclarke
      @mrjohnsonclarke 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hey so I'm not sure what do do in all situations (of course).
We wrapped the bite from the foot and all the way up the leg using a consistent but not too tight bandage application. We didn't have a sat phone, we tried other campers sat phones but they failed signal (the further you go north the worse the signal gets). We were on the UHF trying to call for help when someone camping a few Ks away heard our call. He jumped on his HF radio and called for Emergency Services. We had an ambulance arrive with Charles (the Jardine ferry manager) and they took her to Bamaga where she was air-lifted to the Torres Straight Islands for treatment. We 'think' it was a whip snake (but not entirely sure) as the symptoms were fluid build-up, pain and swelling of the joints.
I think no# 1 item is a satellite phone (which you can hire) no# 2 is a HF radio and no#3 option is an Epirb. I always travel in convoy for safety reasons as I have kids of my own.
After this experience we now carry a Sat phone and an Epirb.
The situation can vary. When I was on my 2016 Simpson Desert trip, camping at Coopers Creek I almost stepped on an 'Inland Taipan' at about 2am in the morning. I am certain that no matter the preparations I would have likely died if I had of been bitten. The good side of this is that everyone was in so much shock from my stupidity that it enforced a very strong snake-aware mindset for the trip. Perhaps the close-call was worthy after all...

HI Ronnie, great video, looks like a great trip, and really good commentary! I truly believe your video's are by far the best 4x4 series around. Pat Callahan and All 4 Adventure are great shows too, however they don't have enough actual four wheel driving in their content and tend to be more product placement bits or about fishing. I like that you drive a real four wheel drive, that has not had hundreds of thousands of dollars spent on modifications which is well beyond the reach of us normal folk. Thanks again. DB

HAM or sat phone is a must if going in less traveled areas. Also having a spare starter if you have an auto as well as wheel bearings and extra fluids/fuses. The rest can usually be figured out in the bush or it's absolutely catastrophic.

This place is breathtaking... i live in a town in england, miserable weather every day.. in my room everyday. I just wanna be out, on the road, in the sticks, on a beach in places im not familiar with :(
My mum has an old t25 camper 2wd, buggered engine but soon to be replaced, with a set of knobbly's on it they are quite decent on the rough stuff as well as a bit of mud.

For the internet, that is almost unheard of! This is another positive comment. Brilliant vids all up! Loving it every time you out another one up.
And sometimes it's great to take forced time out to do nothing but explore your local surrounds and get drunk with your mates. Two warnings on this vid, 1. Stay with your vehicle and 2. Don't put too much chili on your pizza, especially when your with your mates. You can never back down in front of them.

Hi Ronny, really enjoyed this 3 parter. Some amazing shots and very well put together. There is another channel I watch - roaming the outback, I hope it's ok to mention it here. Anyway the reason I bring this up is that Brett does a lot of solo trip. He has like a gps pager that tracks his progress, but also can be used to send sos messages and call the emergency services in case of accident/breakdown. Though I would mention it here given the discussion in the video.

hey ronny, what about energy on your rig, have you got installed a solar panel too? even a compressor fridge would drain a 90Ah in 3 days. or did you turn on the engine once in a while?
and for that boost device: you should check some review vids ..
    can't wait to see part 3 ..

I don't feel sorry for you Ronny. Yes, the vehicle was busted but spending 4 days there would be a dream to me.
You should consider an insulation tent for the Weber, especially useful for use as an oven. Even a thin one would speed the cooking and reduce the fuel usage.
