The most obvious downside to living in Finland is the (relatively) cold and dark winter. So make sure to take your vitamine D and have enough hobbies/activities to make life fulfilling also during the winter months. I have noticed that foreigners tend to stay for a long time, if they can cope with their first winter in Finland.

You should absolutely move to Finland or at least visit us at some point! You would be most welcome. Btw, I absolutely love you accent, cannae deny it (see, what i did there:). I love how you sometimes replace L with sort of W - like "well" turns into wew, and welfare turns into "wewfea". It's hard to describe in letters, but it's such a cool accent!

Finland is special! You need to like that, or it's not for you. Every good point of the country has its flip-side. There will be a lot to get used to. Finns are language-savvy, but they didn't get it for nothing - 10+ years of study and constant reinforcement was needed to get to the level Finns have in English. The constant reinforcement is due to no dubbed movies in Finland - they might be texted, so English is heard and understood at a high level. Finns expect you to be interested in Finnish and put in an effort to learn Finnish, why would they not - they are non-hierarchical in their mind-set, so you can do what they can do - so just get started, no excuses, dummy! They wouldn't want to become an English-speaking country. Finnish is a phantastic language, and after some study you'd be impressed.
There is a Finland for everyone. But you need to find *your* Finland - it s an adventure and takes some trial and error. Nobody can find it for you. When you learn more about Finland and Finns and Finnish culture, you can adapt a life-style that really suits, and you will contribute to the statistics of Finland being the happiest country, as has so many immigrants before. The immigrants in Finland are almost as happy as the Finns...
The question is: would you rather live somewhere else? Finns say: NO!

Some reasons that came to mind why someone might not wan't to move to Finland:
    - Long dark winters/ cold climate
    - Language
    - Introverted/quiet people that can lead to feeling alone in a foreign country
    - Long border with Russia (at least now during war with Ukraine)
    - High tax/ expensive to live in

I'm a proud IMMIGRANT living in Finland, and I really hate the term 'expat'. It's justifiably associated with a very specific type of immigrant. The type that won't call themselves an 'immigrant', still refer to their old country as 'home', always whinge about things the new country doesn't have, cannot manage without importing boxes of food products from the old country, etc, etc.

Having been a subtitute teacher on and off for a few years now, I can say that our education system isn't "great" it's good compared to places like the US, but we have large problems at the earliest levels of education, which hurts the system everywhere. The kids are overly active and addicted to their phones, elementary school teachers don't have enough power over their students to correctly teach behaviour.

We do not like people who come here and start telling us how to live. Neither do we like anyone who thinks they are above other people or pull other people down.
When you cross that border and are inside Finland, be good, adapt and youll do just fine. You learn the language, get a job, mind your own business and life, thats it.

We do have a lot of overweight people, but obese people are extremely rare in people under 70. I have never seen a morbidly obese Finn who wasn't in that condition due to being severely mentally disabled from birth
Since it is tax funded healthcare system, being obese and overloading the system due to your gluttony is not tolerated well by fellow citizens. The government has a greatly vested interest in keeping its citizens happy, well educated, fit and healthy, since it will lead in to massive savings in policing and health care costs
A big problem for immigrants moving to Finland is that they tend to forget that they have to compete with Finns for any non trivial jobs, and Finns are *extremely well educated,* honest, diligent, physically fit and polyglots of 3-4 languages.
You better be amazing at your job with stellar portfolio if you plan on seeking a high paying job in Finland, since the competition can be extremely fierce for these positions, and not being able to speak the language and not knowing all the cultural practices will already put you in a massive disadvantage
Starting as an exchange student for a full decree and learning the culture and language during these studies is most likely the best way to integrate into Finland and into jobs that aren't in the transportation/service industry
Since you were asking why someone wouldn't want to move into Finland. Well, Finland can be a nightmare for people with any of these traits: extroverted, boastful, bigoted, arrogant, classist/elitist, ignorant, selfish, flashy, materialistic and greedy 😅
There are ofc a LOT of Finns with with those traits, but they are almost always looked upon as very bad traits to have (apart from the extrovert)

You do not see young obese people out and about , because they just sit at home looking at their phones etc.
The one significant thing why they are as such.
Trust me, there are lots of them.

@@suomenpresidentti Morbidly obese is different from over-weight and obese. It was a personal anecdote, not a claim that there aren't any. Just that I have not seen them
No, not mentally ill, mentally disabled (very different things)
And yes, many mental disabilities can cause the people to have very low ability for self-control which also affects over-eating if their eating isn't being overseen by someone else. In addition to that, they often have other medical conditions as well that cause them to gain weight

Unfortunately the current government is trying eagerly to ruin a lot of these things. Let's just hope that it doesnt happen. For example life for immigrants would be more difficult (finding and getting a job + staying in Finland). Also the education system will be much worse if the plans actually come true. Going back to uni as an adult would be way more difficult (but still somehow people would need to learn new working skills). Going from a wellfare state to a... Well, just a state. But as this government is all over the news around the world for its racist talk, its more than probable that goverment will be changed in a matter of time.

Yes we have obese and fat people as well, but not that type of fat what you can see in TV how fat people there are in UK and US. People here are not fat like John Candy or Chris Farley were. More like Jack Black or Seth Rogen type of fat.
Well there is were one thing that was kind of wrong. If you are unemployed and you haven´t ever been in job, then the unemployments support comes from the taxes. But everybody that are in work has to pay unemployment insurance that your employer takes from your salary and pays to government. Actually employer pays huge amount of that and the part what goes off from your salary is quite small. So if you´ve been working few years and get unemployed, your unemployment support is payd inform of insurance (all people doesn´t even realise this). Some people feel bad and guilty as they recieve that for no reason. They shouldn´t shame that in anyway.

Those were the pro’s in living Finland and as a finn I can relate to them. The con’s I think is a relatively great racism, and the increasing polarisation between people. The education is free for all but if you came from family of low education, you don’t always have a support to rise a higher education level. The society don’t cover all your education cost’s and if your parents dont afford or are not willing to support you, you must work a lot during studies.

Totally disagree on the racism part, though ofc it depends where in Finland you live. but thats same with every country. Ofc if you look at media you get the picture of high levels of racism, but thats just not true in actual normal life. Regarding polarisation: Again that seems to only exist in social media, not in actual normal life.

We are diving in healthcare, personal economy and wages. Also our unions are in danger. Finland is going to give more power to its employers and kicking the employees in the curb.
The elite wants to get richer and keep the working class down in wages, union help and healthcare, if this continues were fkd, literally.

"Inclusive" is not a word I would use to describe Finland. I have experienced discrimination here quite often, both as a foreigner and disabled person, especially within the healthcare system. Speaking of healthcare, I find the healthcare to be appalling here as well. I genuinely live in fear that I will experience a medical emergency and not be able to get help. I have been in hospital twice since living here, and both times I was left for a long time without food. They literally just forgot to feed me for almost 24 hours. I have PTSD from the experience.
I often think about moving back to my native UK, but the thing that is keeping me here is the childcare and education. Childcare is much, much cheaper than in the UK and the idea of sending my son to school in the UK just horrifies me, following my own experience there. So I guess I am staying here and sacrificing in a few areas in order to have a better family life and a better education for my son.

There's some arguments from other side of coin:
    - Political freedom: multi-party system. Even that our current government consist on parties from middle-right, they cannot make REAL hard decisions on fixing economical situation (because of constitution board of parliament). Finland is so "social democratic" country. It's hard to success (=make money)... progressive income taxes and vat tax rates are high (as well new "solidarity taxes") ensure that there's quite huge middle-class "pays the bill" of welfare).
    - Press freedom: there should free press (one of most sovereign press) but actually our current mainstream media is quite liberal (and against our current government). Few conservative medias are scale of tiny ant.
    - Freedom of speech is no more "absolute"
    - Finland is now member of EU and NATO. Those two organizations tell us what to do...
