    Saw this opening night! Remember receiving the handout glossary and infosheet! Loved it! Read all the books and prequels even though this version is wild with a few liberties ''name is a killing word" and some 'shatnerian' performances. I believe this 'feel' is closest to my reading of the atmosphere and the characters than other more story true presentations.
    Thanks for bringing it back in a respectful light.

    I'm only a year younger than you and I completely agree. I've loved this movie from the beginning. And I didn't read the books until much later either. I still like this version much better than the SyFy channel versions, but have hopes for the new one.

    • @mmille10
      @mmille10 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agree. I watched the Syfy version, because it was supposed to more closely follow the book. I liked seeing the differences (I was shocked to find out that "Muad Dib" was the name of a desert mouse!), but it seemed like, from what RNG said, that the ending was rather like the 1984 movie, where Paul becomes the liberator of the Fremen (that's what I remember, anyway), rather than the whole "messiah" thing being a scam.

      Guaranteed the 84 version we will still be much better than the new one. Remakes are lame and only for money.

    I love David Lynch and this speaks to great directors who can make gold under control from outside forces. Kubrick hated Spartacus due to not having control over the film but it is pretty fantastic and so to, David Lynch hated Dune for the same reason but I really loved it despite the problems. Great review.

      @Peter Smith
      :
      AFAIK, Lynch never hated the 2h 17m originally-released theatrical version of _Dune_ [1984] (which is what the Retro Nerd Girl reviewed above). OTOH, he totally disowned the much longer, later-released "Extended Cut" which reads DIRECTED BY ALAN SMITHEE in its opening credits.

    Yeah I'm also one of those weirdos that loves this film! Sure, it's hard to match the book and hopefully someday it'll get the Lord of the Rings treatment in the movies, but I've always enjoyed it. I liked the exposition. I found it interesting. So many people are afraid of that in films these days. If something doesn't explode every 5 minutes then they call it boring. I didn't find the pacing slow because I found the characters and the world they inhabited to be so interesting. It's like when people complained that Return of the King had too many endings but I liked them because I liked the characters and wanted to see what happened to them. The Dune saga gets very tragic for the Atreidis family. It would be interesting to see a series of movies that go in depth into their story. But until that happens we have this one. I like it much better than that Sci Fi channel mini series. And of course i love the huge worms! I agree about the look of the film. It was very well done and had a great look. This came out at a time when Star Wars was still in it's prime so it was important to separate themselves from that. The cast was fantastic! And Brad Dourif has the honor of being in films for the best sci fi novel AND the best Fantasy novel. The best part of the ending was the scene with Alia. She was so creepy and yet bad ass, lol! Great review! I think that this will help people who want to read the book as well.

  • @mmille10

    My impression about the arc of the story in the movie was that it had a different take about the spice than the book did. It put the emphasis on the water stores that the Fremen kept. You notice in the movie that it makes a point of talking about who has how much of it. There's a line in the movie where the Fremen leader says to Paul, when he shows him and his mother their water stores, that when they have enough of it, they will flood Arrakis. That ties into the ending, where Paul conjures up the rain storm. So, in the movie, the Fremen aren't really concerned about the spice. They use it, but they don't depend on it. What they depend on is water.
    I think the implication of the movie's story is that the spice is part of the whole corrupt game. Everyone's fighting over this one planet because of it. Destroy the spice, and the game is over. There's nothing to fight over anymore. This also ties into the closing credits, where you see ocean waves. That's what Arrakis looks like afterwards, and it's portrayed as a wonderful transformation of the planet.
    The role that Paul plays in the movie is the liberator of the Fremen from this constant game of conquest that's been the bane of their existence for eons, and they can finally have the planet to themselves. As you said, the movie took Paul's role as the Kwisatz Haderach rather literally, not as a fraudulent scheme.

    • @charlie-obrien
      @charlie-obrien 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It's appropriate that you point out that Arrakis is transformed at the end, because it is actually transformed in the later book "God Emperor of Dune" by Paul's son Leto the 2nd. Bringing an end to the reliance on the spice for the most part.

    ¡Wow! What a outstanding review. Thank you for not badmouthing this outstanding 1984 movie. I was in Central America at the time and when I finally saw 1984 Done I watched it over and over, again and again, with this intoxicatingly intoxicating Sci Fi intoxicated-less blood cells, yep, bone dry. Even my DNA had also dried all up. That craved for intoxication. You did such a beautiful review of the film. It was passionate and candid. You described it exactly how I feel about the 1984 Dune and thirsty for a lot more. Thanks

    Great review - never apologise for the length or detail! I had not realised until all those stills you shared that the Space Guild were either slowly transforming or affected by spice in a Lovecraftian fashion - bulging eyes, leaking brains, stains down their uniforms. It fits in with a Lynch cinematic universe.

    Hi Retro Girl,
    I have seen all the previous movies & have just finished the first book on audiobook. I also love this movie & I'm looking forward to the new one as I hope you are too. The trailer for the new version of "Dune" looks spectacular. The current plan is to split this new version into two parts with the upcoming movie covering the first half of the book, whereas, the second film will cover the final part of the book. There are also plans for a "Dune" TV Series which will center on the Bene Gesserit Sisterhood. Looking forward to your comments. Thank your for your time & attention.

      I am actually excited to see the new Dune film and I am so happy that the film is in two parts. I am not looking to critique the films as much as see where they will go with it and I hope they continue the films to follow the books because, everything in the first book is leading up to the God Emperor of Dune, the fourth book, where we get the main moral of the story. Just my opinion. Thanks so much for asking!😊

    Harlan Ellison, who was very hard on SF movies, liked "Dune", calling it the "Gone with the Wind" of the genre. I haven't seen it in decades. Has some nice images (the entrance of the navigator into the throne room, the Baron flying around, those old school CGI force fields & Virginia Madsen's close-up at the beginning >sigh!

    • @rossh7186
      @rossh7186 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That seems a little excessive. It's true that the central message of the novel is lost - but it is a very subtle message to begin with, which becomes clearer in the sequels - which Lynch baulked at making (quite reasonably). I didn't work this out till I'd read the book twice and seen the film - well, how many times! In terms of the ambience of the novels, I think it's a great interpretation.

Was so lucky, back then to win a Group Health Co-op lottery($50.00 a ticket) and attended the West Coast Premier, meeting Herbert and some of the cast in a Seattle theater. _Dune_ [1984] is an excellent film and a very good adaption of Frank Herbert's very-difficult-to-film novel and is primo Sci-Fi. I've always had this opinion of David Lynch's film since I saw it brand new on the eve of Christmas Eve (Dec 23d), 1984, never caring that such an opinion was not a popular one. It's 10 of 10 stars as far as I'm concerned hehehehe

    Great review! I also really enjoyed the movie Dune, but I think you really need to read the book in order for it to make sense. All of the visuals - the set design, the location, etc - were AMAZING though! They went far in building a universe that was immersive and felt like one the characters could inhabit. The special effects got a lot of criticism, but I thought the "unfinished" feel made them look surrealistic, which is perfect for a movie like Dune and its theme of drug dependency. After this review I'm inspired to re-read the book and re-watch the film!

  • @mmille10

    I'd heard for years that David Lynch was the director, but I didn't see him in the credits. I found out later that he was, indeed, the director, but that he'd had his name removed from the credits, because he didn't get enough creative control to make the movie he wanted. So, a standard fake name was put in for the director's credit.
    Also, you should check out the interview with Patrick Stewart about this movie. It's wild! He said that he wasn't even supposed to be cast for it. He got involved because of a mix-up. His agent told him he needed to show up to be fitted for his costume for a role in a movie. He showed up, got fitted, and later showed up on set, all ready to go. Lynch saw him and realized a mistake had been made. He'd asked for a different actor, but Stewart is the one he got, and he had to go ahead with him, because he'd already been fitted for his costumes!
    There's a funny story about Stewart and Sting, as well, that I won't spoil. :)

    This is not a guilty pleasure it’s not a cult film either it is a unrecognized masterpiece epic unfortunately it was produced in the 80s where the tech wasn’t there yet however the costumes and sets are gorgeous I’ve never found it slow I’ve always been engrossed with every scene. What Denis Villeneau has made with the remake is also breathtaking and impossible to look away from but is so linked to the original film but definitely more realized on the big screen but couldn’t have been without the original. Great channel too, cheers

    Well, I was 11 not 14 when the movie came out and Star Wars dominated mid-80s Sci-Fi with classic Kenner Toys available everywhere. "Dune" was really a "niche" Sci-Fi adaptation, for a specialist audience.... very different from a mega franchise like Star Wars.

  • @paulwalsh2344
    @paulwalsh2344 ปีที่แล้ว

    "I love Dune... Just give me more Dune !" I so TOTALLY AGREE with you there, Retro Nerd Girl !
    I think that what David Lynch brought to the screen was magnificent... just there was so much magnificent plot and character insights and world-building in the novel that would have been so perfect if it had been shot and put in this movie...
    I LOVED the stillsuits and different disparate homeworlds. I LOVED the sandworms. I LOVED the Guild Navigators and their minions in the added scene with the Emperor. I LOVED all that ! I even liked the new idea of the sound weapons.
    It just would have been so epic to have the scene with Stilgar spitting in front of the Duke; the Atredies dinner scene; the plot involving the accusations against Lady Jessica (which would have shown her to be even more of a badass !); Hawat's capture scene, the battle with Jamis and Paul naively asking Chani to carry his water rings; The subplot to overthrow Stilgar; The Harkonnen gladiator game scene; more of the fierceness and arrogance of the individual Sardukar in the book; Gurney's scene with Jessica toward the end; and more of the scene with Alia badmouthing her grandfather lol. I mean, how can you include the disgusting depravity of the actual Harkonnens especially the Baron in a movie ? You just can't and that's what I always tell people when they don't understand the motivations of some scenes with the Harkonnens, especially the Baron.
    Unfortunately you need pages and pages of non-verbal exposition showing the lack of moisture... not water... but mere moisture on Arrakis that was in the novel but not included in the movie (I genuinely felt THIRSTY when reading Dune !). The repeated references to the reasoning for antiquated knives and swords in the sci-fi age of lasers and shields in the book but not in this movie. You need the horrific depravity of the Baron and Harkonnen that is in the book but not in the movie. You need the repeated political intrigue that fleshed out the plans of the Baron, the Emperor, the Atreides, the Sisterhood and even the Fremen that didn't make it into the movie.

  • @hanng1242
    @hanng1242 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have yet to see the new adaptation that came out last(?) year (because I don't want to watch half a movie), but I, too, liked the film. However, I think that the SyFy Channel 6-part miniseries was a better adaptation. Obviously, the miniseries could not begin to compete with Lynch's film in production value, but aside from the annoying and unrealistic teenage angst, I think it portrayed the characters better. In particular, I like how the Baron Harkonnen was portrayed as an intelligent and devious schemer, rather than a grotesque floating joke. I also like how the "wyrding way" was more like a martial art than a piece of technology.
    As for Dune sequels, I think that adapting anything after God Emperor of Dune would be a waste of time. By Chapterhouse, I got the feeling that Herbert was writing is his dissertation on religion with a plot as no more than a framing device. It seems to me that Leto's ascension to wormhood is a good place to end. Duncan Idaho assassinating Leto would also be a good place to end. By Heretics, the story is so far removed from the original Dune that it might as well be a different universe.

    What a terrific review for all of us "Dune Lovers". I saw it in the theaters and even though I hadn't yet read the book, (I ended up reading and loving all of the original books), I loved the world building and the scope of the movie. In my opinion, it did in one film what it took Star Wars three movies to complete.
    Your observations on things like what was left out of the film and character motivations are correct and important to note, because this was a much more moral tale, than we had seen in Sci-fi movies up til then, for the most part.
    I also really like your appreciation and exuberance for the things the film gets so right and your honesty about what doesn't compliment the story, like cheap effects. You are right that Lynch had surpassed his original budget about 2/3 into the project.
    Only Rafaella DeLaurentis' complete and continued support of David Lynch kept him on the project all the way through and is the reason that we have this slightly flawed but oh so elegant film of Herbert's great novel.
    Fans of works of art such as Dune, don't expect perfection. Even the book is not perfection. But we do enjoy and appreciate creativity and a stimulating experience.

    I watch this movie once a year or so. Not to mention reading every book by both Herbert's, n love them all. The big enemy returned in the last and the naming OF the true haderach is amazing. Well tied up neatly after 20 odd books. The challenge of bringing this to films is incredibly difficult, I'd hate to even try. Lynch did well, I agree with you on this, n Toto s soundtrack helped big-time to overcome the visual effects of the times.
    I think this could have challenged star wars if luck fell just a little differently.
    @nerd girl, did you enjoy the sci-fi channel dune series, specialy with the sequel children of dune? Do you have a favorite character in the series at all.?

      I liked the scify channel series, but I didn't love it. Children of Dune was really good. I enjoyed Leto II the most in the books and the series. And you? 😊

    Well, that was certainly an epic review. And I love that the review parallels its subject by starting out surprisingly long and then being cut down (I won't say that either one actually needed to be cut).
    I can't say that I'm a big fan of Dune (I've only read the first book) and for me the movie, upon seeing it in the theater when it was first released, was just more of the 80s grim and gritty (and slimy) excessiveness that I was already very tired of. Nevertheless, your enthusiasm, as always, is contagious. Perhaps Dune the Movie was a victim of being released at the wrong time and is deserving of a rewatch. After 35 years, it would be much like seeing it for the first time.
    Anyway, thanks again for another wonderfully entertaining review. Keep 'em coming! And I'm glad you finally got to announce, "Father, the Sleeper has awakened" to the world. :D

    I just found your channel and tried to make it through several of your uploads but couldnt. I know 'most people' don't mind background music on commentaries, but if the TH-cam data is accurate, about 20% of people can't stand it, and I am one of them. Please understand that I am not here to complain, I genuinely hope this small comment helps you, as you have excellent content! I thoroughly enjoyed this without the background music! Subscribed, liked and notification bell rung! Cheers!

      I appreciate that! When I started making reviews I did play background music, but in my more recent movie reviews in the last 2 or three years I only put music in the intro and outro. So yes, I agree and my reviews have improved. For my older reviews, I can't change them, but I would if I could. Thanks for the feedback. 😊

    lot of backstory was left out. Baron Harkonnen being Jessica's father, Kynes being Chani's father, Duncan Idaho being the Atreides ambassador to the Fremen, Gurney Halleck's allegiance to the smugglers and the smugglers presence on Arrakis, the Emperor's Sardukaur army being trained on his prison planet and the Harkonnens wanting to make Arrakis into their own prison planet to train their own warriors, Yueh's whole motivation for betraying the Atreides is almost completely ignored.
    The film also invented stuff that kind of over complicates the plot compared with the book. In the book the Emperor wanted the Atreides gone simply because their fighting force was almost as deadly as his Sardukaur, and with the Fremen bolstering their ranks which they would likely do once they claim Arrakis, their army would be mightier than the Emperor's sardukaur, which the Emperor would not allow. In the movie the emperor is told by the spacing guild to kill them and paul because they have those strange ass weirding machine things that let them blow shit up with their voice.
    The Weirding way was changed from a martial art in the book to a little box device that lets you destroy stuff with a shout like you're playing Skyrim.

    13:50, Baron "Dick Cheney" Harkonnen is bathing in oil. Giedi Prime is swimming in oil and the Barons enjoys bathing with black gold like all greasy oil tycoons and sheikhs do. I took the scene as the Dune version of Scrooge McDuck bathing in all his $$$, but I suppose it can be a metaphor for spice and chocolate too.

    In the Sega Genesis game Dune there is another faction made up of a cartel of families, who oppose both the Harconan, and the Atraties. Does this faction appear in the book?

    • @RetroNerdGirl
      @RetroNerdGirl  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To my recollection, the Landsraad was composed of all of the 15 noble families in the known universe, so maybe yes. I never played the Saga game so I am not sure if that is it. All of the families were jealous of each other. The emperor kept them fighting each other so they wouldn't over through him.

    My only complaint about this movie was that the battles were so one sided. Harkonan vs Atradies, and Fremont Vs Harkonan. I felt no sense of tension. I get this wasn't a war movie, but the battle sceans were very poorly done.

    That was a really interesting idea you had about the scene where the Baron showered in that gunk... I never thought it was chocolate LOL, but instead it was just the heavily industrially polluted water that boiled and bubbled around Geidi Prime, but yeah him drenching himself in that liquid... could be a solution of melange and Geidi Prime water !... to prime his oncoming personal drug fueled orgy of depraved sexual violence !... Why not ? ! From now on I think that notion will forever be a part of that scene !

    I was a year younger than the reviewer was when I first saw "Dune" during its flop at the box office. And was both baffled and put off by it initially. But by the end of the '80's I had read the first book in the Dune series twice and all five follow up novels. So it has become a guilty pleasure for me to watch over time. "Dune" is a very meaty read and very difficult to translate into a single film. Besides that, the portrayal of the Harkonnens, especially the Baron, is so over the top in the way it rubs their grossness into the faces of the viewers. Of course, it is going to be seen as extremely homophobic in this day and age as well. Would be nice to see a re-release director's cut that would cut out the excess macabre grossness of the original release. "Alien" was meant to be "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" in space, not "Dune". We don't need the Harkonens to be portrayed like the family of redneck cannibals in "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" to know they are the bad guys.

    This is going to be remade as a two part film.The director of Blade Runner 2049 is dune it(Ha,see what I did there?).Anyway,regarding your cutting down the review,next time you write a long review,why not just make it a two-parter.Other movie review sites have done this on occasion,and I for one never tire of listening to your well thought out opinions.Also,thanks for mentioning your theory about the dark liquid the Baron pours over himself.I’ve always wondered why he acted like such a spazz.Hope you’re doing well,now I better stop before this gets as long as Dune.

    I've never found the 1984 Dune to be slow paced, it does chop through so much of the book and it is frustrating but i do like it too. The music and way its shot is solid, the only real flaws i think this Dune adap is obviously it being all crammed into one film, and the SFX on the space scenes and starships looks quite naff for even that time.

    This film is so wrong on so many levels concerning the source material that it should have gone the way of Jodorowsky's version and never been made. From the whole reconception of the "Weirding Way" from hand-to-hand combat (basically super Kung Fu) to a bizarre sonic weapon (or something like that - the movie never makes it clear) to the entire misrepresentation of Muad'Dib and what he brought to the Empire (the final voice-over says he brought peace where there had been war and love where there had been hate, when the exact opposite is what actually occurred - a Jihad), this monstrosity is what you get when you put people who've never familiarized themselves with the source material, or who actually dislike it, in charge of making a movie based on it. BTW, the same thing is what happened to Verhoeven's 1997 disaster Starship Troopers. The movies end up being all about what the producers or directors want, rather than about presenting and giving life and visualization to the ideas in the novels and the authors who created them.
