My dad raised me watching Porter's show till he passed when I was 6. He gave me the Cincinnati Reds too. After every Sunday at church we watched Porter then the Reds. Porter gave me Dolly.
Saw him play once in Branson, MO. My 1st wife was born in Mountain Grove, MO...so we made several trips there, and of course, always spent a few days in Branson.
Growing up in Cincinnati in the 1960s, my mom and I would watch The Poter Wagoner Show on Saturday afternoons. It was broadcast from Dayton, so our reception was not so great, but that didn't matter, we could still hear the music.

My mom always listened to Porter Wagoner, she was from Neosho, MO (west side of the Ozarks) Porter was from the east side in West Plains. I remember mom playing many of his albums on Sundays.
The best songs always have a good story.... That's why I love country music and Chuck's rock n roll.. I'm not convinced by Porter's oath of secrecy though... He's just told the whole world what happened... 😁
And listen to the great Buck Trent on that electric banjo. One of the best sidemen in the history of country music. He should be in the hall of fame himself for his work with Porter, Roy Clark, Hee Haw and session work.

Whenever this song came on the radio me and my older brother would get quiet and quietly sing along with our Mom and Dad. It wasn't until the early 2000's that I learned Porter was from West Plains, Missouri; just a "Stones Throw" from where my Dad was born, in Van Buren, Mo :) Such wonderful memories :)
The son realized when he found the ring, his dad Walter Browning and Mary Ellen were having an affair! Location, I believe since both Wagner and Ferguson (the song writer) are from Missouri bordering Carroll County Arkansas.....I'm only speculating and could be wrong, but this is my best guess.
@@bluegtturbo nope, the song is about a local tragedy that probably happen in the early 50's or maybe the 40's. I remember a bunch of songs like this one, they all told a story that actually happen years earlier. Folk music! Or Ballad.
I know the writer (Bob Ferguson) always said this fictional, that he got the name by passing a highway sign for Carroll County, TN. But it seems strange that the most famous person to come out of that low-population county was longtime congressman, two-time Tennessee Gov. Gordon Browning (1937-39, 1949-53). I'm surprised he didn't sue.
Music has taken a downward spiral since this generation. Love music that can actually tell a story instead of the crap they play on the radio these days. Can barely understand a darn word...
According to the writer, Bob Ferguson, it was Carroll County, MS. He was driving from Nashville TN to Philadelphia MS, and when he went through Carroll County TN, he got the idea for the title, and when he saw the sign for Carroll County MS, the song was complete.
@James Avery. You're welcome. There are a number of Carroll counties in the U.S. and I guess it must have just had a certain ring to it that appealed to the writer of the song.
I agree. There will never be country singers as good as the ones from this era. George, Waylon, Charley Pride, Hank Williams, Hank Snow, Loretta....but thankfully we have their recordings. I am so glad that I grew up on this music.
Some young, aspiring country singers could get ahead today if they go "back to the future" and study some of the greats of country music a generation or two ago.I'm also getting tired of all of the blue jeans and black shirts and black hats. So many country artists today are country-rock artist and so many of them are copyingeach other.
I remember going to see where my cousin crashed. The old days maybe because everyone didn’t have a car or a phone. If you had a phone you ran down the road to say someone is on the telephone
