It is, there were the original Milli Vanilli type groups in the 1970s. Producers would write the songs, hire singers but the actual live performances were done by other people.
Their story is extremely sad and tragic. Rob never recovered from the humiliation. In the end, they were just two pretty boys hoping to make it big and who were taken advantage of. I have so much respect for Fab for soldiering on and finding his own path. I'll be watching for sure.
imagine all the people this happens to daily now. its a fad to belittle people for flaws and people are addicted to sharing commenting and distributing them. people just cant understand when i tell them what they are doing sharing memes videos articles pictures etc. on youtube tiktok facebook and other platforms but llike i said people are addicted to peoples misfortunes and the scammers that distribute it.

I have to say I was primarily a metal guy in the 80’s and when Milli Vanilli came on the scene even I stopped and took notice. After their fall, I continued listening to their music because it was just fun, catchy, and great stuff. Rob and Fab had a great vibe and I really didn’t care they didn’t sing. I am really glad Fab found stability and happiness, he deserves it.
Same hear I would stay up late to watch headbangers ball as a teenager but loved Milli Vanilli to and when it came out they didn't sing I still listened to there music and I am glad Fab got redemption and can actually sing really good!!

Never knew why they were hated on and vilified so much. Many artists (especially in Europe) made entire careers out of lip synching and no one batted an eye lid. Props to the original singers of course but mad props to Rob & Fab for their presence, style and dance moves, regardless of the vocals their energy and performance was a rare gem💎
Milli Vanilli was way bigger at that time than any other lip-synching act was. Milli Vanilli won a Grammy which essentially implicated the elites of the music industry into this whole thing. No other musical act that did this ever came close. Milli Vanilli managed to be big in America, which has the biggest and more conservative music market, and become household names.
They were the smallest entities in the "scandal". The laborer is always thrown under the bus. It doesn't matter if it's workers Amazon, actors or in this case lip syncers. The company or industry will allow them to be destroyed before they take a hit. Sadly, this really did cost someone his life...
@@TrestanSKYWALKR Unfortunately, most people really don’t see the music industry like that, and I’m sure there was a component of racism and xenophobia to the scapegoating of Rob & Fab as well. Rob & Fab were not only black, but foreigners and they were celebrities at the time, ones that were not particularly highly regarded to begin with. They were often ridiculed already. Clive Davis was not that big a household name and out in front with them and very few Americans knew about their producer Frank Farian, because he wasn’t out in front with Rob & Fab and because he really had no successful music acts in America. Boney M never caught on in America.
I just watched it too. I remember watching they spoke, before all drama, ans thinking, "Wow, their accents really gone when they're singing." I guess that answered the question. 😅 What I didn't understand was the backlash towards the singers, but not the producers and management. I'm not a fan of their music, but they didn't deserved all the hate.
It was awful the way they had to take the fall (I remember not caring that they were lip-syncing) and then when Rob died... heartbreaking. Absolutely heartbreaking.
Frank Farian built them up, then broke them down. It is unfortunate that Fab and Rob didn't have proper legal representation to help them from the very beginning . They were young and trusted Farian. Great documentary. Well put together.
To think that if they'd been around today, autotune would've solved all their problems. Things is, their real voices weren't that bad. They sounded better than many artists today.
I was 16 when they hit it big and loved them - the music, the looks, the dancing - everything. So sad what happened to them in the years that followed. ☹️
This takes me back to November 1990... i wish i could go back in time and tell the millions of fans that they'd be redemption! RIP RoB! Thank you Fab for being so determined and never giving up! You are a true inspiration!
Amazing documentary. I had no idea the label knew about everything. The best part was the ending, Fab Morvan has a beautiful voice. They were both great entertainers. In retrospect, the producer could have had the studio singers go on tour as the backing band / support vocalists and let Fab and Rob do their thing live - then label the whole thing Milli Vanilli. The whole controversy seems almost tame now considering how much music in 2023 are studio / producer creations.
If you have not seen the documentary, please watch it. It is definitely worth your time. It shines a light on much more than Rob & Fab. So glad to see Fab is doing well. RIP Rob.
As a teen at the time, I loved Milli Vanilli. I didn't even care that the guys were lip syncing it. Just missed hearing the songs on the radio and seeing their videos on MTV. Too bad, because their whole image/concept was great.
@@arkady714 It shows that music is entertainment at its core. The producer hired great songwriters, great singers, and great frontmen as the face of it. In disco music particularly, it was more common than you think. Film and television series often creates illusions like that. The same thing can apply to music. The producer Frank Farian was very talented when it came to crafting recorded music. It shows in his previous creation Boney M’s albums, which the songs hold up pretty well. The Milli Vanilli music is still pretty good years later. Recorded music is often about creating aural entertainment. It doesn’t always have to be limited to authentic situations. Brian Wilson and The Beatles created incredible sounds that stretch beyond the conventions of instrumentation.
It was hardly only them. Martha Wash was replaced by someone lip syncing to her at least twice in the 90s that I know of. The most famous one is C+C Music Factory "Gonna Make You Sweat," but also Black Box "Everybody Everybody." For Black Box, not only was Martha replaced in the music video by Katrin Quinol, they put Katrin on the album cover, and gave Martha no credit on the album, even though she sang lead on six of the eight tracks on the record. Only Katrin was credited initially as a vocalist, though she sang lead on _none_ of the songs.
It wasn’t quite the same. The session singer was a willing participant for C&C and she basically was a background singer and did get credit in the liner notes for singing. She was not actually a member of C&C Music Factory during the first album. What she did was use the Milli Vanilli scandal to try to engender sympathy and launch her own solo music career.

this was so good. Fab can sing and I'm happy he's doing well! I wish Rob was still alive, I'm pretty sure with the right vocal coach he could've performed right along side Fab.
according to the producer aka Frank, both Rob and Fab couldn't really sing. he said their voices were miserable. that's why he didn't allow them to actually sing. :/
What really bothers me is that an artist being caught lip syncing is basically a career killer, but most people have zero problem with the fact that a LOT of modern music is very, very heavily autotuned. If the end result in both scenarios is that very little (if any) of a person's actual voice is being heard, then it seems super weird for one to be considered bad while the other is widely accepted.
consider that you are talking about reactions to the same issue, with 30 years of difference. Nowadays, nobody cares if the singer uses autotune or not, as long as the song is good; it's a given that "everybody uses it" even if it may or may not be true. Back in 1989 autotune didn't existed, and artists were expected to truly "sing" their songs; all the lip sync was hidden because of customer expectations. Now things have changed
Just finished watching this , I was never a fan of MV, but the story was worth telling… And I feel terrible for both of them and may God rest the soul of Rob . I’m happy to hear that Fab is doing great with his family . Neither of the Boys have anything to be ashamed of & what I mean by that is the one person who walked away from this with his money and power intact is the guilty one. The boys were just as much victims as the fans . I hope Fab can continue his slow but productive rise to place himself above the wreckage of the past .. Speaking of the past , there’s nothing we can do to change it, it’s done and over with .. it’s time we all move on and I hope Fab can do that !!
In 90s India,I was a school kid and i remember my father having an audio cassette of Milli and how he used to listen endlessly.play.rewind.play.rewind. Those were the days.brought back so many memories.

By Rob & Fab’s accounts, that’s precisely what happened. They have always maintained that the producer Frank Farian did not tell Rob & Fab what their actual purpose would be until they couldn’t do anything about it. He had given them money that was meant to be an advance and they had to pay it back to cut ties from Farian, which of course, they couldn’t by then. Farian clearly knew what he was doing.
Don't care for haters, the album was big, and listens well even to this day. Have the Girl You Know It's True single in vinyl, a treasure in my collection.
I always felt sorry for them. Still listen to their music to this day. Now lip-syncing is practically considered normal. Hate that Rob lost his life over this. RIP 🙏🏾
This is so sad. You could see the pain on their faces. I remember feeling so sad for them. I'm glad he is telling their story and i hope Rob knows somehow.
A testament of how amazing they were as a duo(and the whole concept of the producer), is that not even the unraveling of the scandal made them any less popular or liked after all these years. People still love them and remember fondly the music videos and them as "artists" not just "fakes"; you can set a dancefloor on fire if you play any of the original songs. The original band came out with the "Real Milli Vanilli" and nobody cared about them; people wanted Rob and Fab on stage as MV or nothing. It's very sad that Rob just couldn't deal with the aftermath; it's a sad cautionary tale. Props for Fabrice for having the mental fortitude to come to terms with what happened and keep on living life, and carry the legacy
Such a tragic story, but I love the redemption story Fab has, I'm so glad he has found peace and happiness with his beautiful wife and his beautiful children. In the end, that's all that matters.

Milli vanilli was one of my favorite groups . Even though they didn't really sing , the songs were great . They should've had a career in modeling after the controversy. Rip to Rob. Girl u know it's true is the most catchy pop song ever made.
It was the producer/ Manager was the true villain. They used Rob and fab. And then they were dropped and left to deal with the humiliation and aftermath themselves. Truly awful how they were treated.
Watched the docu and I honestly felt bad for these two. They were just two kids who were taken advantage of and then made into scapecoats. A young life is over because of the shame and ridicule they suffered. I love Rob and Fab and the songs, regardless of who sang them!
I heard them talk in an interview and I knew instantly they did not sing those songs. However, I still enjoyed the music and watching them dance. I felt bad for the real singers that received no recognition and probably not paid much.
They didn’t care for getting the recognition. Otherwise, they would not have ever done it in the first place. They were just happy to get paid to sing on records.
I remember watching an interview with them before the scandal broke and being surprised that their talking voices were completely different from their singing voices. That era of dance music was a mess, the producers were the ones manipulating everyone but the models were the ones blamed for it.
I said the same thing years ago about their speaking voices. I was told "You're jealous because they're better-looking than you and have talent!" Hmmm...

MV were and will always be sensational, and the tragic turn their career took was not their fault. Entangled in the questionable business practices of the music industry at that point in time was the norm. I hope that the sales of the 35th anniversary cd will be profitable, not in the dollar sense, but in some sort of validation for both artists. My VHS tape is already grainy and would love to purchase the vinyl copy this Nov. Kudos to Paramount for documentary.
This story is an absolute tragedy. It's tough to imagine how producers and industry executives could be so complicit in exploiting a couple of naive young men who simply wanted fame and fortune. The real villains here earned millions and orchestrated a scandal that ruined careers and lives. In the end, it's reassuring to see that Fab prevailed and found the things in life that truly matter. It's equally unfortunate that Rob was never able to find peace and happiness.
I just watched this. Up until now, I thought I knew what had happened, but I was wrong. It’s a real eye opener folks, and well worth the time… I highly recommend it.

I was in school when they blew up the charts. You couldn't turn anywhere without hearing about them. I remember how corny and cheesy they were but their music was super catchy. Then the scandal blew up the media. But still, today for nostalgia sakes, it doesn't matter if they lip-synced to the songs. They brought back so many memories. Anyway, in today's context, lip-sync is just another facet of music. Case and point, auto-tune.
I remember the rapid rise and fall of Milli Vanilli as if it happened yesterday. They were massive. It really is a sad story for both Rob and Fab. Today, lip syncing is pretty common among popular singers/groups and no one bats an eye.

This was one of the best documentaries of recent years.. I am so happy for Fab and his current life. He is such a kind soul and wish him the best. Rob is in a much better place. RIP
I am so very, very glad the story was finally told....as it NEEDED to be told. I have watched this several times and had tears streaming down my face each time I've viewed it. Fabrice did a beautiful job narrating and talking of his experience in the documentary, and I know his heart is still very, very heavy from the loss of his brother, Rob Pilatus. He was just too young to die and left us way too soon. Both of these young men had oodles and oodles of talent, but instead, were exploited by a terrible producer who has a pattern of doing just that.....and making tons of money along the way. Fabrice....if you are out here.....and if you see this....I am so very, very sorry for the abuse and exploitation you and Rob went through. Furthermore, I am so very, very sorry for your loss of your brother, Rob. You both deserved so much better. Just know there ARE people out here who are in your corner and who DO believe in you. You had and DO have talent....just be sure to keep on sharing it whenever, wherever and however you can. Take care of yourself and your gorgeous family! You ARE LOVED!
It was a completely shocking documentary with a lot of heart. Fab, I applaud you coming forward to tell this story. It makes me appreciate your music even more than I did when I was younger. I hope to get the opportunity to hear you sing in the future...I loved this. The ending was also very touching. ❤

I feel so bad for both of them. I was a big fan of them and I was young. I never ever got angry about them not singing. I loved them anyway. I was just shocked when I found out they weren’t singing. My heart goes out to them both even today because the media didn’t have to be so cruel to them. They should have been cruel to the man who put this together for a second time!!! I’m so happy that Fabrice is doing so well and has a beautiful family now and is singing.

Every single bit of this story is a blockbuster movie material. It has everything and more - kids from orphanage and poverty shooting for stars, evil producer, planetar success, rise and downfall, their fallout, tragedy, new beginning for one of them, I mean its even too cheese to be real but it is real.
I tell people make fun of them all you want NO ONE back then ignored that album. NO ONE.. that was and still is one of a kind album and why it sold what it sold.
I was a HUGE fan back when I was in 5th grade. And I wasn't even mad when I knew they weren't singing because both guys were a package deal. They looked and performed like superstars. Watching this documentary is definitely an eye opener.
I remember watching reruns of Behind the Music on this duo as a kid. I always thought the outcome was unfair. They were a little before my time but I still thought they looked cool and clearly had a management controlling them. I never thought the jokes after the fact were funny either. They were looking for a way into success and they were exploited. Quite a few people nowadays are only studio singers anyway. They were ahead of their time, and they could actually sing. They just sang with accents the US population wouldnt be into. THey had huge talent, looks and charisma. THey didnt deserve the hard vitriol they received.

Milli Vanilli was way bigger at that time than any other lip-synching act was. Milli Vanilli won a Grammy which essentially implicated the elites of the music industry into this whole thing. No other musical act that did this ever came close. Milli Vanilli managed to be big in America, which has the biggest and more conservative music market, and become household names.
They were the smallest entities in the "scandal". The laborer is always thrown under the bus. It doesn't matter if it's workers Amazon, actors or in this case lip syncers. The company or industry will allow them to be destroyed before they take a hit. Sadly, this really did cost someone his life...

Rob & Fab were not only black, but foreigners and they were celebrities at the time, ones that were not particularly highly regarded to begin with. They were often ridiculed already. Clive Davis was not that big a household name and out in front with them and very few Americans knew about their producer Frank Farian, because he wasn’t out in front with Rob & Fab and because he really had no successful music acts in America. Boney M never caught on in America.

just watched this movie. The most tragic part was hearing that Fabrice CAN sing. All of this drama could have been avoided.
For me the tragic part was, them meeting at the front of the bar where rob is crashed and being homeless
I just watched it too. I remember watching they spoke, before all drama, ans thinking, "Wow, their accents really gone when they're singing." I guess that answered the question. 😅
What I didn't understand was the backlash towards the singers, but not the producers and management.
I'm not a fan of their music, but they didn't deserved all the hate.
It was awful the way they had to take the fall (I remember not caring that they were lip-syncing) and then when Rob died... heartbreaking. Absolutely heartbreaking.
Frank Farian built them up, then broke them down. It is unfortunate that Fab and Rob didn't have proper legal representation to help them from the very beginning . They were young and trusted Farian. Great documentary. Well put together.
To think that if they'd been around today, autotune would've solved all their problems. Things is, their real voices weren't that bad. They sounded better than many artists today.

When I was a kid I was so sad to see society tear them down like they did. Now look at todays artists…they deserve better.
Amazing documentary. I had no idea the label knew about everything. The best part was the ending, Fab Morvan has a beautiful voice. They were both great entertainers. In retrospect, the producer could have had the studio singers go on tour as the backing band / support vocalists and let Fab and Rob do their thing live - then label the whole thing Milli Vanilli. The whole controversy seems almost tame now considering how much music in 2023 are studio / producer creations.

As a teen at the time, I loved Milli Vanilli. I didn't even care that the guys were lip syncing it. Just missed hearing the songs on the radio and seeing their videos on MTV. Too bad, because their whole image/concept was great.

In disco music particularly, it was more common than you think. Film and television series often creates illusions like that. The same thing can apply to music. The producer Frank Farian was very talented when it came to crafting recorded music. It shows in his previous creation Boney M’s albums, which the songs hold up pretty well. The Milli Vanilli music is still pretty good years later. Recorded music is often about creating aural entertainment. It doesn’t always have to be limited to authentic situations. Brian Wilson and The Beatles created incredible sounds that stretch beyond the conventions of instrumentation.

It was hardly only them. Martha Wash was replaced by someone lip syncing to her at least twice in the 90s that I know of. The most famous one is C+C Music Factory "Gonna Make You Sweat," but also Black Box "Everybody Everybody."
For Black Box, not only was Martha replaced in the music video by Katrin Quinol, they put Katrin on the album cover, and gave Martha no credit on the album, even though she sang lead on six of the eight tracks on the record. Only Katrin was credited initially as a vocalist, though she sang lead on _none_ of the songs.
People should've been more mad about the Martha Wash scandal than they were about Milli Vanilli
It wasn’t quite the same. The session singer was a willing participant for C&C and she basically was a background singer and did get credit in the liner notes for singing. She was not actually a member of C&C Music Factory during the first album. What she did was use the Milli Vanilli scandal to try to engender sympathy and launch her own solo music career.

What really bothers me is that an artist being caught lip syncing is basically a career killer, but most people have zero problem with the fact that a LOT of modern music is very, very heavily autotuned. If the end result in both scenarios is that very little (if any) of a person's actual voice is being heard, then it seems super weird for one to be considered bad while the other is widely accepted.
consider that you are talking about reactions to the same issue, with 30 years of difference. Nowadays, nobody cares if the singer uses autotune or not, as long as the song is good; it's a given that "everybody uses it" even if it may or may not be true. Back in 1989 autotune didn't existed, and artists were expected to truly "sing" their songs; all the lip sync was hidden because of customer expectations. Now things have changed

By Rob & Fab’s accounts, that’s precisely what happened. They have always maintained that the producer Frank Farian did not tell Rob & Fab what their actual purpose would be until they couldn’t do anything about it. He had given them money that was meant to be an advance and they had to pay it back to cut ties from Farian, which of course, they couldn’t by then. Farian clearly knew what he was doing.
Don't care for haters, the album was big, and listens well even to this day. Have the Girl You Know It's True single in vinyl, a treasure in my collection.
I always felt sorry for them. Still listen to their music to this day. Now lip-syncing is practically considered normal. Hate that Rob lost his life over this. RIP 🙏🏾

A testament of how amazing they were as a duo(and the whole concept of the producer), is that not even the unraveling of the scandal made them any less popular or liked after all these years. People still love them and remember fondly the music videos and them as "artists" not just "fakes"; you can set a dancefloor on fire if you play any of the original songs. The original band came out with the "Real Milli Vanilli" and nobody cared about them; people wanted Rob and Fab on stage as MV or nothing.
It's very sad that Rob just couldn't deal with the aftermath; it's a sad cautionary tale. Props for Fabrice for having the mental fortitude to come to terms with what happened and keep on living life, and carry the legacy
Such a tragic story, but I love the redemption story Fab has, I'm so glad he has found peace and happiness with his beautiful wife and his beautiful children. In the end, that's all that matters.

It was the producer/ Manager was the true villain. They used Rob and fab. And then they were dropped and left to deal with the humiliation and aftermath themselves. Truly awful how they were treated.

Watched the docu and I honestly felt bad for these two. They were just two kids who were taken advantage of and then made into scapecoats. A young life is over because of the shame and ridicule they suffered. I love Rob and Fab and the songs, regardless of who sang them!

I heard them talk in an interview and I knew instantly they did not sing those songs. However, I still enjoyed the music and watching them dance. I felt bad for the real singers that received no recognition and probably not paid much.
They didn’t care for getting the recognition. Otherwise, they would not have ever done it in the first place. They were just happy to get paid to sing on records.
I remember watching an interview with them before the scandal broke and being surprised that their talking voices were completely different from their singing voices. That era of dance music was a mess, the producers were the ones manipulating everyone but the models were the ones blamed for it.

MV were and will always be sensational, and the tragic turn their career took was not their fault. Entangled in the questionable business practices of the music industry at that point in time was the norm. I hope that the sales of the 35th anniversary cd will be profitable, not in the dollar sense, but in some sort of validation for both artists. My VHS tape is already grainy and would love to purchase the vinyl copy this Nov. Kudos to Paramount for documentary.

This story is an absolute tragedy.
It's tough to imagine how producers and industry executives could be so complicit in exploiting a couple of naive young men who simply wanted fame and fortune. The real villains here earned millions and orchestrated a scandal that ruined careers and lives.
In the end, it's reassuring to see that Fab prevailed and found the things in life that truly matter. It's equally unfortunate that Rob was never able to find peace and happiness.

I was in school when they blew up the charts. You couldn't turn anywhere without hearing about them. I remember how corny and cheesy they were but their music was super catchy.

I remember the rapid rise and fall of Milli Vanilli as if it happened yesterday. They were massive. It really is a sad story for both Rob and Fab. Today, lip syncing is pretty common among popular singers/groups and no one bats an eye.
Lipsyncing is only part of the story with this group. They didn't sing on the album. THAT is why they got into trouble and had to give back their Grammy.

I am so very, very glad the story was finally told....as it NEEDED to be told. I have watched this several times and had tears streaming down my face each time I've viewed it.
Fabrice did a beautiful job narrating and talking of his experience in the documentary, and I know his heart is still very, very heavy from the loss of his brother, Rob Pilatus. He was just too young to die and left us way too soon.
Both of these young men had oodles and oodles of talent, but instead, were exploited by a terrible producer who has a pattern of doing just that.....and making tons of money along the way.
Fabrice....if you are out here.....and if you see this....I am so very, very sorry for the abuse and exploitation you and Rob went through. Furthermore, I am so very, very sorry for your loss of your brother, Rob. You both deserved so much better.

I feel so bad for both of them. I was a big fan of them and I was young. I never ever got angry about them not singing. I loved them anyway. I was just shocked when I found out they weren’t singing. My heart goes out to them both even today because the media didn’t have to be so cruel to them. They should have been cruel to the man who put this together for a second time!!! I’m so happy that Fabrice is doing so well and has a beautiful family now and is singing.

I remember watching reruns of Behind the Music on this duo as a kid. I always thought the outcome was unfair. They were a little before my time but I still thought they looked cool and clearly had a management controlling them. I never thought the jokes after the fact were funny either. They were looking for a way into success and they were exploited. Quite a few people nowadays are only studio singers anyway. They were ahead of their time, and they could actually sing. They just sang with accents the US population wouldnt be into. THey had huge talent, looks and charisma. THey didnt deserve the hard vitriol they received.
I still 💘their music. As a teenager in late 80s I was nuts about them. Miss those days.

What a great documentary❤ I am from Russia, so I wasn’t even around when all of this was happening, but I heard Fab’s story on a podcast one time and it touched my heart. After that I went down the rabbit hole on the story of Milli Vanilli. Such a tragic story 😔 Happy to see Fab doing great and keeping Rob’s memory alive
