Brandon Lee’s Death: Inside The Crow’s On-Set Shooting and Bruce Lee’s Family ‘Curse’

  • Brandon Lee’s death after an accidental shooting on the set of 1994’s ‘The Crow’ added fuel to a longstanding ‘curse’ conspiracy theory, with the young actor and his father, martial arts legend Bruce Lee, both dying under mysterious circumstances. In one of his final interviews, Brandon opened up to ET justweeks before his death at 28 years old on March 31, 1993. He gave an intimate glimpse at what it was like growing up in the shadow of a cultural icon, and how his role as revenge-driven Eric Draven in the comic book adaptation was all but certain to put him on the path to mainstream success. With an eye-witness account and disturbing details from behind the scenes, ET breaks down how Brandon was killed with a prop gun and a ‘dummy’ bullet while filming his character’s on-screen murder. While the two surviving members of Brandon’s immediate family, his mother, Linda Lee Caldwell and sister, Shannon Lee, shared their harsh reactions to the ‘chain of negligence’ that led to Brandon’s shooting, they also supported ‘The Crow’s release and his final role hitting theaters on May 13, 1994. Thirty years later, Brandon’s fiancée, Eliza Hutton, broke her silence in the wake of Alec Baldwin’s accidental shooting of ‘Rust’ movie cinematographer Halyna Hutchins in 2021. In her plea for a reevaluation of gun use in Hollywood, she reflected on losing Brandon decades earlier, which was only days before their wedding and a new future that he had excitedly told ET was ‘gonna be great.’ 'The Crow' is streaming on Paramount+.

Brandon was days away from marrying his fiancée Eliza when he died. I think remaking this amazing movie would be disrespectful to Brandon Lee’s memory. He gave his life for this movie and there will never be another Eric Draven.

I was almost 18 when this movie came out, and having been a huge Bruce Lee fan all my life, was stunned when Brandon died during filming. There are no words to convey what it felt like to watch this film, knowing that Brandon had died on set. The film was already so dark, but knowing he lost his life cast an even darker ambience over it.

As a 42 year old man, I vividly remember my dad introducing me to Bruce Lee movies in the late 1980's, and I instantly fell in love. Bruce Lee became one of my heroes. Then a few years later I discovered that his son was also an actor who did martial arts. I watched "Show Down In Little Tokyo" and just as I did with his father, I fell in love. "Rapid Fire" was one of my favorite action movies growing up. I just knew he was going to be a MEGA STAR!! I was so excited to learn of the movie "The Crow", because at that time, thanks to my older cousins, I was into that dark (goth) stuff and the music associated with it. I remember learning of Brandon Lee’s passing, that was the first time I had ever cried over the death of someone I didn’t know. I couldn’t believe it. I didn’t want to believe it. At that time my father worked as a prop maker for Paramount Pictures and he got in contact with a buddy of his who got me a "The Crow" movie poster, an original print, mint condition. It was professionally mounted and framed. Till this day, it's STILL hanging up in my house. 30yrs later, still mint, and Brandon is still my hero. RIP.

Including one with a female Crow character, which would be a great idea for a movie. I even found things to like in the sequels, and even the TV show. (I'm the type to look for things I like, rather than dislike.) But the reboot? JUST WRONG. I won't vent, but I could for pages. Considering how they changed the story, why not just make him another CHARACTER?

How many more times will you remember a certain afternoon of your childhood, an afternoon that is so deeply a part of your being that you cannot conceive of your life without it? Perhaps four, or five times more? Perhaps not even that. How many more times will you watch the full moon rise? Perhaps twenty. And yet it all seems limitless. RIP Brandon Lee 😢
