+Richard Gantenbein I'm lucky enough to own one here in northern Sweden. Found it in pretty good shape in a farmers yard. Survived 30 years of not starting or moving. Now I like gunning around the Forests sounding like a crazy bee with the muffler off :) More fun is impossible to have.
+Richard Gantenbein I had one at age 17. Didn't quite know what I had but I loved it. My Dad sold it out from under me while at college . . . fun to drive. 3 cyl, 3 Webber carb . . . auto oil feed . . . great dashboard and gauges. Roomy interior for a sports car. Loved it.
I had a '67 model 96 years ago, triple Solex carbs, one the most fun cars I ever owned.I found my dad a model 95 wagon for those Adirondack winters around the same time. wish I still had them.
Sounds like great fun, that was another V4 engine then? Google didn't want to play nice with me today ;) I heard about a guy who slapped a couple of turbos on the standard engine, upgraded the carburettor and a few other things, but he sold it because it started "eating gearboxes". They're great fun and I hope I can keep driving my -75B 96 V4 for many years to come (even though proper tires are getting hard to find).
It's actually backfiring when it isn't floored. I was a wee youngin', weaned on this model in the latest of the sixties and earliest of the seventies... What fantastic memories... I have stories...
That being said, the V4 had a particularly fragile gearbox as it was just a reinforced gearbox from the 2-stroke, this was much cheaper than designing a new one which would then be replaced by yet another in the 99. I've heard that SAAB tried out a few other V4 engines, but for some reason ended up with the Ford engine even though it wasn't the best one. If you haven't already I'd suggest visiting the SAAB museum in Trollhättan, they have a few old prototypes such as the "Toad" and "Monster" .
The Saab 2 stroke engines were made in Sweden, except for the first prototype in the late -40´s which had a 2cyl DKW engine. I had a -66 3 carb 96 which ran beutifully, but low end torque is not these engines main feature! If you got a -68 2-stroke, Congrats! They are rare! 100 hp is probably the upper limit for the 850 cc, after that you will have to look for crankshaft remains all over the place...... The 2-strokes had far better handling though, than the later front heavy V4 cars.
I had a 66 triple-carb 96. Mine would (and did) go 86 mph. Rated at 46 hp. and I'm sure it made that much. The Stine family got the rare 68 3 banger, with the lower windshield than the 68 V-4s got. I loved my 66 and their 68 too.
We had one of these as a shop car in auto shop when I was in high school about 10 years ago. I didn't even know what to say when they first fired it up.
The V4 is still much more fun to drive than modern cars, never driven the 2-stroke though so I don't know how they compare in handling. Then again, if you want to see a front heavy 96 look up the V6 modification, from what I've heard they understeer quite a lot ;)
Had all those mice running in tandem, did we? (I owned a succession of these reliable 2-stroke corn poppers in my snowy, Midwest college days. Lots of good memories . . . )
A friend of mine had a -73 V4, but the original engine was no good.. We installed a Taunus 1700 S engine (80 hp) in it, and it was just great fun to drive..... If going pretty fast on a twisty dirt road in an old Saab, the worst thing you could do was taking your foot off the gas pedal in the middle of a curve. If you did, you would soon be looking at your own tail lights..... It takes some guts to drive these great but somewhat goofy cars fast;-) But that was no news to you i guess......
The fact that it´s a 3-speed with a "big" rear window tells me (If not modified) it´s a 61-63 Saab 96, not a 93. The 93 was discontinued in 1960. People here laughing about this 45 hp figure, but these Saabs don´t weigh much so they´re pretty quick, especially on curvy dirt roads. In a big rally in here in Sweden in 1964, one guy used a Ford Falcon with a Holman/Moody prepared 260 (over 270hp). In the result list I can find two of these Saab´s with a better time!
Don't forget--the Saab 2 stroke was a DKW engine from Germany. It is an 850cc Vs the DKW 3=6 engine which was a 1000 cc. I wanna see an 850 4-'joke' engine make as much power as this does! Even the later German Ford V4 in these old SAABs, at 1700 cc can't hold a candle to these little buggers! And these things are WAY De-tuned--300+HP is entirely possible from those 850cc's! I have a '68 model 96, 3 carb "shrike" engined car. Needs restoration. Lotsa low end torque these things have, too!
@campingkillen Also bear in mind comparison with other cars of the era. 45 bhp doesn't sound much today, but cars were much lighter then than today. - When compared to a 1200 Beetle of 36 bhp, a 1300 beetle of 40 bhp, or a 1500 or 1600 beetle of 44 bhp & 50 bhp respectively, this is a very good output for the time. especially from such a small capacity motor.
@michaelalexander3828 i think that was the 1300. If I remember correctly, the first 1200's were 34 bhp. Must have been like being strapped to a rocket! 🤣
that explains a lot! Thanks to the different exhaust pulses of a two-stroke, it sounds like twice as many RPM's to our ears! (which explains why it sounds sort of like a 2015 F1 car) thanks for the info!
@Sleeper260 what is wrong with that. dkw, saab, trabant, wartburg, all front wheel drive two popper. saab did real well with that lil thing. real well. won alot of rallies in its class, alot of them. hell even subaru had a rear engine two stroke car.
@@geosutube Which used the 2000 cc 16 valve OHC Straight 4 cylinder 4 stroke engine from the English built Triumph Dolomite Sprint. No connection with Triumph Motorcycles by the way. Stupid US pollution laws killed the 2 stroke. Blame the drug riddled Calafornia sexual perverts an tree huggers for that one.
The weak point on all classic Saab models is the gearbox. Using a standard engine and careful driving seldom leads to any bigger issues. But Increased horsepower and a "sporty" driving style, always means a greater chance to blow the gearbox to pieces.... But why does the Ford engines fit so nicely in a Saab? The story goes that Ford bought a couple of Saabs as "mules" just to try out their new V4 engine in the early to mid 60´s........
We had about 30 of these in my extended family. I can almost smell the exhaust! Love it!
Haha smells like pure gasoline
i wouldent care if my car only made 46 hp as long as it had that sound :)
I'm testing that out myself. Bought one last week. I'll see how long I can survive with all the huge trucks and SUVs 😂😂😂
My classic Dacia has 61 hp and it's a blast to drive
850cc via 3 cylinders
Love the smell of two stroke exhaust early in the morning... I miss my 1965 model 96, one of the best cars I've owned
That is one of the best sounding engines i have ever herd!! I am now a man on a mission to find my next car! I will have one of these!!

Same. Watched this video all those years ago and I said I'd get one. Traded one last weekend for one of my Volvos. 63' 96 Sport
that actually sounds fucking great for a 2 stroke.
Horsepower: 45
Torque: 65
Wish that would have been in the description.
0-100kph, still trying hard......
@@cobaltpica keep in mind, this car weights around 2000lbs. It's essentially like an inline 4 that's only running on 3 cylinders
@@pettttson rubbish, its like 6 cylinder 4 stroke with no limit.
Goosebumps!
They don't make cars like this anymore. Well, there is a reason for that but it would be awsome if they did.
In Twin Turbo, using Veggie-oil!! I want!!

the ONLY time a piston combustion engine will ever sound like a 20B 3 rotor engine out of an FD3S mazda RX7.

haha agreed!
a 20B maybe but the saabs have stupidly long gears
...or like exactly half an RB26 ;-)
I myself am not a Saab guy, but the sound from these two stroke cars gives me goosebumps

2 stroke sounds amazing, I wish I had an rz350.
Holy christ this sound is soooooo ❤️
The best noise. I love ttwo strokes, I really want a big two stroke bike.
sounds like a rotary . awesome
Yes xD
Like the rx7
yes! but the power is less than the engine starter of an rx7... :-)
around 80HP in sports trim with 3 BVF 40 carbs
You haven't lived until you can stand in the woods next to a dirt road and can hear that saab 2 stroke screaming at ya

does it pass the emission tests these days
it sounds like a MG Metro 6r4, V6 N/A

How was the gas mileage? Most 2 cycle engines weren't known for gas mileage

moral imperative 46hp max power i think it looked like, haha
the real question is will it fit in my go kart with a supercharged on it

It will still beat any civic Just listen to that power band
I just jizzed in my pants
Do you have to mix your own gas to fill it up? My scooter mixes it automatically. Popcorn anyone!
I believe you do, even if it had an automatic oiler I'd premix anyway.
scooter drivers is different than we hardcore 2-stroke believers
I'm pretty sure its a 96, not a 93
