When I was a kid, there was a neighbor across and down the street from my house in the late 60's early 70's that had one of these with a spotlight in the middle of the roof above the windshield. I could always hear it start up and would run to the window to see. He would wind it up and back it out of the driveway quickly, , then put it in forward and wail it down the street. I like two stroke everything, and rode exclusively two stroke motorcycles for a time, both street bikes and trail bikes from about 1974 to 1983. If I came across one of these cheap enough and in good enough condition, I would love to have one for a toy today. There's nothing like the aroma of an over rich two stroke starting up in the morning.
Had a neighbor with one of these growing up in Ohio. People made fun of him cuz he had to mix the gas with the oil. But most snowy morning she was the first one out and he would clear the street
Growing up with these, we 3 kids used to do a great imitation of the Saab leaving or coming home with Dad. We called the 612 Saab 96 the "Breen-de-deen" car, because of its strange sound. "BweeEEEn-de-deen-deen-deen, BweeeEEEn-de-deen-deen...
Sounds like that old snowmobile that I used to own lol! Do you have to pre-mix the fuel and oil? Do you have to carry spare spark plugs, spark plug wrenches, belts, and extra quarts of oil when you drive? How long do the crankshaft seals last? How about when you de-accelerate, do you have to push in the clutch to allow the RPM's to come down so you don't starve the engine of oil? Maybe not belts I suppose... Are they built any better than the 2-stroke Trabant?
Some Saabs came with an oil metering system that would dispense the appropriate amount. In my '67 Monte Carlo 850 rebuild we left it off and premixed when fueling. Great car, lousy mileage.. 3carbs/2stroke/15mpg.. My Saab had a freewheel mode activated by a cable pulling out gear connecting forks in the tranny. The difference in quality of build between Trabant and Saab is vast.
@@klasadolfsson3213hi Klas.freewheeling was selected by pulling a knob under the dash. In the US some states traffic laws forbid freewheel operation (IN).
Do not let the revs go down!!! at least 6500rpm never less!!! This engines "pull" a front wheel drive car!!! That needs to have high revs for very good handling qualities as well as awesome stability!!! Saab 2 stroke!!!=a winner!!!😊😊😊❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
So yeah, for a daily driver those engines are a big pain in the rear, I'd rather have a 36 or 40 hp with the cutout crank throws. They pulled nicely from 2K on up, no need to rev past 6 grand.
Actually it has a special oil feed pump with 7 feed lines, four go directly to the main crankshaft bearings, and 3 go to the lower cylinder walls. The oil isn't "premixed", it's just the opposite, it's fed undiluted into the turning and sliding parts of the engine where it can form a film of oil at critical friction points before the gas/air mix can dilute it. The Suzuki 2cycle CCI injection system is similar.

Look up the KTM 250 and 300 cc Enduro EU spec bikes, test riders are claiming the transfer port injection makes them pull better at lower RPM's, some are comparing them to Diesels in this regard.
I owned and loved a 67 Monte Carlo 850.. destroyed by dealer svc dept. Ressurected by a tech I met years later. Destroyed again by an auto electric shop.. Thanks
Actually similar but entirely Saab's own design, The porting was improved and they had a real distributor with a mechanical vacuum advance which made the stock versions very nice cars to drive in traffic.

@@ericr.severin8434 Really your heater core must have been plugged because both of my cars when warmed up would drive you out of the car with their heat. I think you're confusing your car with a VW Beetle, VW's had crappy heaters. Our local car repair place was able to realign my 1962's front end quite easily and professionally the mechanic said it was one of the more easier cars to do an alignment job on. And they're known for their work on oddball European cars, they had just done the front end on a 1948 Fiat Topolino the week before. So having competent mechanics that know what they're doing, matters.

most lawn mowers are 4 stroke aircooled and made of thin cast aluminium, the SAAB 2 cycle engine block is ductile Nickel steel and as tough and as long lasting any small car engine ever made. As long as you keep the right kind of oil in their oil injection or proper ratio of premix they stay running.

Don't have all the answers but i do know that they had freewheel hubs, so no engine brake.

I carry extra plugs, and two 5 quart containers of oil in the trunk. Freewheeling works great and I'll definitely miss it in a normal car
There's just one single belt on the car. Does the trabi have a second one powering the fan?
Glorious.
