I think the issue with the modern motor simply is: Someone saved a penny by winding them with too thin wire. At no-load, they perform the same as one with enough copper. Under load, they turn into resistors, limiting the current to naff and producing heat.

Sadly, on this occasion I must beg to differ, Sam.
My version of the 2MT (BR Black L/c R3836) has been exemplary. I bought it new for £164, which I judge to be a decent price. It performs beautifully at slow and fast speeds, has excellent torque, so I wonder whether the motor on yours was just a rogue one. I’m delighted with all of its fine details which look wonderful. I’ve fitted a HM7000 sound decoder and that’s fantastic too. In short, I cannot fault it in any way. Gets 10 out of 10 from me. 😃👍🏼

My Hornby collectors club 2MT is fantastic. It looks and feels great. Loads of torque. Runs silently. Great crawl, with good speed range. I cannot fault it at all. I’m running it on a Hornby HM2000. Well worth the money I feel.

I had this model on pre-order from Antics online having originally paid 169.99 then literally last week they emailed me asking for another £29 because Hornby had put the price up! I thought this was a bit naughty so i cancelled the order and got a refund instead. I would like to get one eventually because this particular loco was shedded at 89c on the Cambrian line in mid Wales when my late Dad was a driver there so there's a good chance he drove the prototype at some stage of his career. Good review as always Sam 😎🤘

    Great review Sam.
I have the lined black version which i'm really happy with. Mines running on digital and i've not had any of the same issues with power. I've not had it on 20 coaches but it handles my gradients with ease with 3/4 coaches which is more typical of the prototype.
On the subject of the wheels, after un boxing the model and testing it the first thing i did was paint the tyres to match the wheels. I may be a bit fussy but the model looks so much better with them painted.
I have since started to do the same thing to all the other locos i own as part of my weathering prep.

The new Hornby 2MT model is very nice and I do like this model because it has a die-cast body shell which makes very heavy and quiet powerful if it has a motor which works properly. Plus, the details on the model is very nice. I like the use of both molded and separate detail parts combined which makes the 2MT model look nice. Unfortunately, you are right about the choice of motor making the model underpowered and having no modern features like the firebox glow along with no chain link for the coupling hook. You are 100% right about fitting a coreless motor into the Hornby 2MT's mechanism because it makes the model run way better and more powerful than the 5 pole motor Sam. I hope you will do a video of changing the Hornby Large Prairie model soon. I cannot wait your video of changing the Hornby 2MT Sam. Overall, the 2MT is a pretty good model.

Crazy to think that when I had to take a break from model railroading around when the Hornby Princess class was released (early 2020) this had just been announced!
Now that I'm back and seen what Hornby has done to the UK market, I think I'll model something German/Continental instead...
New ready to run Roco models may cost more than this but at least they're packed full of detail and there's a healty amount of competition in the continental market to keep quality high (though not prices low 😅).
I will still allow myself to get one of those superb looking Accurascale Pannier tanks though! 😝

From the looks of it a good locomotive to start out 2024, I will admit I have been considering one of these even though I’m not the biggest fan of Mogul steam locomotives but I do like the standard design locomotives, if I do get one it is most likely to be the BR Green and I will want it to have the yellow axleboxes on the tender, that is something I do like with the standard design locomotives, my class 6MT Clan, 8P Duke of Gloucester and a bachmann 4mt all have the yellow axleboxes.

I've said it before, Sam: you really do know how to review a loco! You set the standard for others to aspire to.
The 2MT is a pretty loco, especially in its late BR Green livery. But I couldn't justify the £200 price tag, so bought a BR lined green Ivatt 2MT in VVGC for around 20% of the cost of this model.
Having said that, this Hornby model looks great! Perhaps a Grade D was a little harsh, especially for a such a cute-looking model with wheel bearings?

I really hope you got the email Sam; it would be nice to be able to compare the balancing/weight distribution of rtr locos in the future. That green is damn near spot on! Two coats of Humbrol 35 gloss varnish (the first layer rubbed down with emery) would make it perfect! Also, it seems that Hornby need to give the factory workers sharper nippers to clean up the parts, as there is quite the few nubs on parts. That usually stems from bad manufacturing design though, but my main gripe as usual is with the rods. As is too common at these prices, all of the rods are thick where they should be thin, and too thin where they should be thick, giving the "tinplate valve gear" look that has remained for years as a trademark of Hornby locos.

I was able to get my hands on one in a BR Black with late crest and lining around the model. Lucky for me the Model Centre dropped these models down to £175 around Christmas which was a much better and reasonable price than the £200. I so far not had any issues with it both running in on carpet and on the club model layout without issues so far. But i do love the slow smooth running

This loco would benefit from a DCC decoder with back EMF to tame that sluggish motor. Or a coreless motor, but then you need a decoder specifically for coreless motors. 😊 That being said, this would make a good shunter for a small rail yard or industrial complex. 😊

Good and honest review, thanks Sam. I gave this one a miss because of the price, I think Accurascale and Dapol have spoiled me. If you look at their models Hornby have only implemented the quick release coupling on their 4 wheel Gresley tenders, this one didn't have it nor did the Turbomotive. I suspect they haven't got round to designing it for their other locos. As 2024 seems to be a rehash of all their old locos I doubt you will see it on them either. I bought one of their latest unrebuilt West Countrys and was amazed they hadn't upgraded anything. Firebox glow is a Led and a hole, not rocket science to implement.

I got my 2MT Green Lined just before Christmas. I do not have DC so I had ordered an 8 pin HM7000-8-TXS decoder which I fiited to be able to test the loco. It was a very tight fit with the sugar cube fitting under the weight in the tender.
Initally it would not even move. After much cajoling I eventually got it to go backwards. I ran it backwards for 30 minutes , it then ran forwards ok. I have never had a loco do that previously. However, when run in, it is running very well now. I did try it with a Zen Black 8 pin decoder as I at first could not get the tender body on with the HM7000 fitted. After much fiddling I did get the HM7000 fitted and the tender body on.
Now came the problem. The sound was a bit soft I suspect it is the speaker as there is not enogh room to get it in the box that they come with. When the sound is turned on the Loco intermittently just stops while going around the track, it then starts up again without any intervention from me. This is controlling the loco from the HM7000 App. Power is from a DigiTrax controller. Turning the sound off from the App does not stop the loco from intermittently stopping and restarting ( looks like it loses power briefly) I have to reset the decoder to get it to run OK again without sound turned on.
If I do not use the app to control the loco and use the Digitrax controller then it does the same thing when the sound is turned on, but turning the sound off with the Digitrax it behaves normally ie, not stopping/starting.
I have a number of other locos with sound ( not Hornby ) which run perfectly OK with sound on around the layout.
I contacted Hornby and they said to send it back and the will look at it. It is now with them and I await their analysis .
It ran perfectly OK the the non sound Zen decoder so I don't think it is a Loco issue. It was very smooth and as you said, its crawl was excellent.

worst situation is - they can't find an issue.
I suspect there is some sort of power issue with the HM7000 decoder and the loco, it maybe a dodgy decoder. Having spent all my working life as an Electonics engineer I am used to seeing all sorts of weird issue with electronic components.
At worst I will just use a Zen decoder with no sound. I have got other locos with no sound.

I have the old 1980s version and I love it. Therefore, I like this modern release as well. Hornby did a preserved example from the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway which looks stunning. Sadly, it's a club exclusive. For 200£ it's slightly above what I'd pay for this performance. The Manor by Accurascale is much larger and has loads of power, but can't crawl. For 180-190£ I'd buy it, but like this, I will wait for a sale probably. A great loco nevertheless and a very nice start into 2024. Hopefully many good reviews will follow. I can't wait for the Bulleid Booster or the Rapido W&U Tramway car 👍👍

Thank you for your balanced review, Sam. When you started this one, I was concerned you would run out of superlatives, but you pointed out the bad with the good.
Personally, I was deeply disappointed in the number of sprue scars. The steam pipes had huge scars, as did the chimney and the buffer sockets. I started pausing the review and noted that there was a scar on just about every part. I wonder if the person who assembled your example failed to use nippers and just twisted the parts off the sprues.

I have been thinking about this review. Hornby nearly got right, the die-cast the finish other than some flashing and lovely size for most layouts. But then hobble it with a cheap as cheap can be motor, 8 pin decoder, no lights or firebox flicker. To me they should retrieve the situation. Upgrade the chassis with a coreless motor and 21 pin socket, plugin tender connection and tool up a cheaper plastic body for their Hornby range. Then take this die-cast body, add a die-cast tender and lights, smoke, sound to the new mechanism to sell under the Dublo range of premium models aimed at the Marklin / Trix price point. Sadly this model as is suffers from being too expensive for the mainstream market, but not quite special enough for the premium market.

Hi Sam. It looks to be a really nice model (I haven't watched the running tests yet). I might take issue with your comment that the dome looks realistic having no seam, but in vintage videos I have seen domes being temporarily removed for servicing/overhaul (but not necessarily a 2MT - Ivatt or otherwise). Now that you have pointed it out, there is a noticeable upturn of the running plate towards the front of the loco. Is all the (gold-painted) pipework metal?

    • @SamsTrains
      @SamsTrains  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yeah that's fair - obviously the real dome isn't moulded into the boiler like that... but sometimes when the models have them separately fitted, there's a huge gap around the part where it sits on the body... and I think this 2MT is more realistic than that! Check out the Bachmann O class for a good example,
      Thanks for watching, Sam :)

Hi Sam a very useful review as always.
With regards to the motor I'd largely agree, but with one minor qualifier. All Hornbys small tender locos: J15, J36, K1 & Drummond 700 are geared to run slowly as in real life many of these locos had a top speed of about 50mph.
As you pointed out it's worth noting the model was hugely delayed as the factory making them was in a region of China which had multiple covid lockdowns and my understanding is some of the suppliers for the materials used also suffered in this way delaying it further. Consequently some of the features such as the DCC socket, tender-loco connection, etc aren't the latest.
Those delays were outside Hornby's control and to upgrade the features would have added unacceptable cost and further delay so I don't think we can criticise that too much although perhaps the price could reflect that better.
I'd say they should have made it more in line with the J36's which have RRPs of £165 and £178 or the big tank engines like the prairie, L1 and Fowler 4P which are £178, £180, £190. Of course the collectors club version is £190 and I've seen some of the black ones being sold for £165-175 in model shop sales.
At least it's better value than the 8f which despite it's ancient tooling, plastic body, poor detail and lack of features is an unbelievable £250 instead of in the Railroad Range where it should be.

  • @lindaoffenbach
    @lindaoffenbach 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Wonderful; a new review. Bit of a mixed bag actually isn't it. Mechanism and Quality would have lost half a star more from us though since those motors are dreadfully poor and archaic in both aspects, adding to the little quality hick-ups you've pointed out (flash). Warping of the running plate is difficult to tell; we tend to say not but it is a rather irresolute matter. Not sure what motors H have been using in their recent designs but real quality ones are from Bühler of Faulhaber. A little niggle for us as well is that we can always notice the difference between plastic and die-cast. It is very, very subtle but noticeable on camera, at least to us. But for the money, the balance of the two materials used is fine. Such a pity that development has taken 5 years (ugh). It begs the question if H had not better give it a total restart to modern standards. However 5 years is of course already weird to say the least.
Overall, not sure Sam. She would translate to ~230 Euros. Had all been okay with a quality motor, yes. As is... No... Cheerio.

So, was the release delay because of the motor?

Was the flywheel even added later on to help with quality control issues?
Was the entire release then re-tested and each individual fly wheel balanced for every single loco? OK..

This a 2019 Design.... on the list in China for 2020 (thats Covid Time) it would have been put back on the list when the Pandemic was declared over. Basically, the locomotive is only just 2yrs behind. Everything Sam talks about fits that time perfectly. The price would have been high in 2020-21-22 but since then it appears to be okay on price BUT the motor defect is a prominent feature.

Good review, but I think that you should start reviewing locos running on DC and DCC to give a complete review as the performance can be quite different. This would give potential byers a better understanding of the locos performance. Yes Sam cannot understand the persistence by Hornby in fitting under powered motors. Considering the amount of time to produce this loco you would have thought that they had time to upgrade the motor.
