    30-426SF Bachmann BR Western Pullman 6-Car Train Pack costs £637.95 from Kernow. It is DCC sound fitted and has a power car both ends! Hornby have never issued a train pack with power cars both ends. You have demonstrated that this is necessary to pull a full rake. This issue also applies to the Eurostar and the Brighton Belle. I think Hornby could make a second power car available as an option for those wishing to run a full rake. Thanks for uploading.

      Bachmann Midland Pullman set is on another level in every department, I hope in time they will produce the class 43 HST’s and other sets Hornby chuck into production then pick a price out of the sky!

      Thanks for watching. I have deduced that the coaches are the problem and not the motor unit. There is too much drag in these coaches. I’ve put coaches from my other class 800s behind the motor unit from this set and it can pull them.

    • @geordieceltic2

      Model looks great, but lack of pulling power is most disappointing. Hornby's 225 easily pulls nine coaches. Why do these manufacturers never learn. I was considering getting a nine coach rake, but that is unlikely now. Great review, thank you.

      I believe there more chance of Rishi Sunak growing a spin than that happening, Accurascale are far too busy producing coke, coal wagons and fish vans, I don’t believe we will see anymore amazing things from them for the foreseeable in my opinion.

  • @Michaelgoestofrance

    I had a similar issue with a full-length TT:120 HST. The power car suffered terrible wheelslip. I noticed, however, that the Mk3 coaches were not so free rolling as the earlier Mk1s. As the coaches are available separately (I wouldn't have wanted to risk fiddling with a coach from a train-pack) I took a file to the points of the axles. This released the running and the train runs fine now. Some others have had similar issues, others not. I guess it depends on what you are willing to do given the prices and the risk of invalidating the warranty on a whole train.

    Price issues aside, you’ve given very good ratings to a combined set of models which you’ve clearly demonstrated is not fit for purpose. If Hornby intended it to run as a 9 coach train yet it cannot so do, value for money would be generous at 1/10. Sorry to say, you need to send it back as it’s been mis-advertised under the Sale of Goods Act. Please don’t tamper with it meanwhile as you need to protect your warranty.
    I was keen to see your video as I’d spotted a Facebook posting saying the motor can’t handle 9 coaches. Your video proves this is a design fault which Hornby must now correct.

    Good honest review of a not so great product in my opinion, Hornby haven’t even designed a decent motorised roof fan yet so I doubt they will venture into the motorised pantograph area, the price of this set is ridiculous! It’s no way near the quality of the Bachmann Midland/Western Pullman set in any department! @@fyfieldjunction To be fair there should be a power car at each end for the money! Those pantographs are made for pence and they’re flimsy and cheap like Hornby’s attitude, I hope Bachmann take on projects that include sets like this because they will be made very well indeed, I’m not sure if you have a Midland Pullman so if you get a chance to see how amazing the sets are, Bachmann started making them over 10 years ago with detailing that hasn’t really been surpassed to this day in my opinion, the price was reflective because the set was superb, I have a set and I’m seriously happy with it because it’s superior to anything Hornby has to offer.

    Please let us know what if anything Hornby say or whether you do find that one or two of the coaches are not running freely. Hornby's new brand manager does claim that they respond to genuine problems.
    I recall that I bought some Bachmann Thompson coaches for my brother a few years ago only to discover that the wheels were catching on the underside of the coach bodies, creating lots of drag.

    • @fyfieldjunction
      @fyfieldjunction  หลายเดือนก่อน

      I believe the main issue with drag on these as lack of lubrication. Previous class 800 models I’ve purchased have had lubricant applied to the axles of the coaches from the factory however that isn’t the case on these.

  • @PlatformONE

    You mentioned something about the controller you're using.
    When it's in a 9 car consist, maybe another controller might help.
    I believe a similar problem with Hornby's 2020 APT that due to only one NDM being motorised in the 14 car consist. It needs two motorised NDM.

    • @fyfieldjunction
      @fyfieldjunction  หลายเดือนก่อน

      The analogue controller I use is more than capable of providing enough power for locos. I only mention it because of the loud buzzing noise locos make when using it. Basically informing people that the buzzing isn’t a fault or issue or whatever with the locos motor but more just a standard feature of using this controller.

    • @PlatformONE
      @PlatformONE หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @fyfieldjunction without saying to much, what kind if controller is it?
      I know some Hornby controllers can make a traun motor make a buzzing noise.
      As stated before, for the 2020 APT, running a full car set needs two motorised motor (NDM) cars.
      That Azuma definitely needs another motorised, not a dummy car.

    • @fyfieldjunction
      @fyfieldjunction  หลายเดือนก่อน

      It’s the standard silver Hornby train set controller I use. I very rarely run analogue as i only really use it for running in new models or for testing analogue models that I’m doing work on so I have no need of buying something that’s more expensive.
      The APT was certainly an interesting one. As for this model I does seem like the issue is just too much friction on the coaches due to lack of lubrication. I’ll be doing an update video soon on the model once I’ve got it going properly.

    • @PlatformONE
      @PlatformONE หลายเดือนก่อน

      @fyfieldjunction I've found something similar to a gaugemaster or a suitable CDA brand solves most noise problems. Ditto if it's DCC with a DCC controller/throttle.

    • @fyfieldjunction
      @fyfieldjunction  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I have ran longer and heavy trains in this layout Before without issue. I even run two of my 5 car 800s together permanently now as a 10 without issue although that is with a motor unit at each end. The coaches on this new set do have a lot of drag to them when all together so I’ll look into reducing that if I can and I’ll add some more weight to the motor as well if possible.

    • @NewModelRailway1
      @NewModelRailway1 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@fyfieldjunction One thing I would try is run it with the 5 car set first to see if the train slows down at any specific area(s). Gradually add/run with an extra coach, added one at a time, until it highlights any specific area of track that causes slowdowns or stoppages. Theoretically there should be a quantity of coaches when it starts to struggle. Other things to check of course is the gaps on the wheels.

  • @trainmman
    @trainmman 9 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    I thought your video was really good, i bought the trainbow version of this and like it, i had a feeling it wouldn't be able to take the extra coaches, If you look back in the history of Hornby Remember the HST set where they put the motor in one of the power cars, well same problem add the extra coaches well its got no chance, Personally i have no idea why hornby brought out extra coaches pack for a train that can't take them, and to be honest for the price they can keep them, Overall after doing my own test nice train but a bit overpriced, Maybe hornby should have a chat with kato and see the N gauge version and that can pull far more,

    • @fyfieldjunction
      @fyfieldjunction  6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for watching mate. The model definitely isn’t anywhere near as good as it should be for the money. The extra coach pack is required to make it a realistic length train. The 5 car set on its own wouldn’t be prototypical. A shame that out of the box the model wasn’t useable but luckily the fix was as simple as anything which is all documented in the update video of the model.

    Why do the lights flicker cause some of my models do that aswell

    • @fyfieldjunction
      @fyfieldjunction  24 วันที่ผ่านมา

      If the lights are flicking it can be a variety of things. Power setting could be too low, dirty wheels or track or sometimes it’s just how the model reacts to the controller your using as there’s such a variety out there and they perform differently just like how different locos perform differently. In this case though the flickering lights was just the way the camera picks them up. In person they weren’t flickering and were nice and stable.

      The coaches on the 390s have next to no drag on them though as they are a different design and the coaches don’t have pickups on them for interior lighting like on these. The pendolino mechanism is also completely different as it’s only single bogie drive with traction tyres as the motor unit is much lighter in weight compared to these.
