  • Bill is running solo today. He talks about ways to actually keep training fun and enjoyable, also how to avoid plateaus in training or how to get out of them. Also a match study, Bill goes over his last match at Master Worlds 2022 when he was a brown belt. A lot of lapel playing so if you like that stuff, it might be a fun watch.

I have pretty stocky legs and if I get a triangle it has been pretty solid for finishing. I’m having the, this doesn’t work for me for butterfly guard but I’m hoping there will be AHA moment for me

Definitely got gringo'ed in the match, but it's for the better. If you got the gold medal we would still see it on your neck.
I think alarm went off when Pato got attacked by Checkmat.

This is true, God knew I couldn't handle the weight of that gold and knew I would fall into gluten, pride and never let it down.

I'm a White belt who gets the better if a lot of Blue belts. I train at a high level gym however i've been heel hooked 3 times lately, with one of them being by a coach. Luckily I tapped early enough as my knees popped each time but no serious damage. However I'm put off training there. Is it morally right for a gym to allow this?

Your teammates definitely shouldn’t be ripping heel hooks

I (Bill) am a little more loose on allowing lower belts to apply heel hooks or applying heel hooks on them. BUT, it's nuanced, if a white belt or even blue belt still has a bit of the spaz in them when escaping. I do not apply them for that person because they can hurt themselves while I apply something controlled & vice versa. With that being said, with little info. I would do a self check if you are a little spazzy/wild when being put in a sub. If you say to yourself "hmm, maybe a little" then the coach might be trying to chill you out. I wouldn't do that with a heel hook as things can go wrong quick. The other possibility is not great, and that they are kind being d**k heads when applying the move aggressively. You absolutely when caught in that situation and you feel like coach or training partner ripped a heel hook or other sub, you can ask them to apply it a little slower. You don't look like a b**ch or anything like that. If they make you feel that way I would look for a better gym culture. Question, is it an mma/bjj gym?

Awesome appreciate that yeah I'll just say no heel hooks anytime I'm with a higher belt. I'm not sure what it is in the US but you can't do heel hooks in comp until Brown belt in the UK so it's hidden knowledge. And if you don't know it then you're f****d if you're getting the better of them and they need a guaranteed out. Happened with me and a newly promoted Purple belt when all eyes were on us, bitch move imo. And yeah it's an MMA gym in Bristol. We're actually closely affiliated with Ashley Williams 'Draig' and he said we were a crack head gym a when he last paid us a visit. It was quite the compliment.@@GrapplingWithPodcast
