I started BJJ at 59 and have lifted weights since my freshman year of high school. On top of that, I retired from power line work as a career. So my grips are pretty good. However, I can absolutely attest to the method you described as a very workable fix. I saw somewhere that you were actually supporting the ligaments running up the sides of the finger, as inflammation caused them to not “track” correctly. Hence the pain. Don’t know if that’s factual, but after having to tape up in the middle of a testing I was pretty much sold. Fast forward to today at 67 years old, I do find taping “just because” is uncomfortable if I do it everyday. So there’s that. Good show as always. Thanks

58 years young, JJ for the last 6 years, as you can read I started late. As per my classmates my grips are just major trouble for them, never had a finger injury, because I know when to let go. But I love the video, because I was thinking of taping to give me a little more longevity in my JJ. FYI: I also don’t have gifted big hands.

I really like your stuff... but want to point something out. Regarding Josh's online program coaching program... his set-up is FUCKING rad. I was actually just looking around at Skool (the platform) as a place to host my sales coaching portal... and ran across this HPU BJJ community. Kind of took me by surprise. I'm only a week in to the platform... but the setup feels very legit. I'm a purple belt at 10th planet, but rely on a lot of little "tricks" from my wrestling and even my boxing days. Frankly - I lack some necessary fundamentals that are required if I ever want to be a brown/black belt and/or an instructor. I have the privilege of training with some studs like Andy Varela & Casey Halstead... So honestly, I was just going to sign-up for one month to see how Skool works, and assumed online BJJ training would be total bull shit... but they got me 🙂 The platform, training, and videos all seem legit :-) I'll be around for a while. At $44 a month, what do I have lose? I spend more than that, monthly, on iced tea at Starbucks.

During this time, I was promoted to blue belt and significantly deepened my understanding of various positions. My competition results have improved, and my submission rate has increased. The program has been invaluable for match reviews, feedback, and motivation, all of which have enhanced my performance. I'm not sure if this guy just wanted to talk smack or just didn't do enough research, I comprehend that he spoke his mind, but now he's mine: I've been in the program for about a month, and my genuine recommendation if you're thinking about trying it out, it's just to do it. See even if you have a physical coach at your gym, there are probably more people rolling than just you, the spotlight is not always going to be for your questions, sometimes people even forget to ask, and there might be a language barrier in some cases. My experience with Josh has been fantastic so far, you get videos explaining movements with the thought processing behind it. The internet is full of noise and you get a bunch of people that try and teach without even knowing, or they might know some stuff but you have to learn the right things for your level, and make sure to do it properly. The responses are personalized, they come by fast, and the community is lovely as well. You might have a question or a curiosity, you can post about it, and besides Josh helping out, some members will share their minds, and tips as well. Bottom line if you actually want to get better, this will most likely help, it has helped me, and others too.

I think something very important to consider here with Saunders: - Luke Martin is his coach and is arguably Australias greatest (or second right behind Giles) coach. He’s a John danaher black belt so that says a lot about about the fact he earned a brown belt from a high level individual. He didn’t jsut buy a brown belt online. -most of the people discrediting his Trials wins because it’s “Australia” will not and can not win in that region. For him to win it twice, in dominating fashion this time around says something - as for his course; he DOES NOT say it will take 24 months to get to brown belt if you buy his course. I know you didn’t say that but I’ve seen comments online saying “he’s a scam promising people their brown belt in 24 months” - as for his coaching program I think it’s very much so worth the money. It’s the cost of an average gym membership here in the states and you get access to a trials winner, review your matches/training footage, and get videos made to respond to your questions.

I was skeptical when i started and skeptical when i saw the ads. I wasnt skeptical when i saw joshs dedication to the program and jiu jitsu. Its not some wannabe online program where josh pawns his responses off. His objective review of my matches has helped tremendously. Next time maybe try the program for a month or ask people in it for a more substatantive review.

No HPU online coaching is legit, personally speaking your interaction with Josh is personable and I think the guy knows his stuff and is probably a savant. He was a high level Rugby player why couldn’t he apply the same work ethic to BJJ. Also he was at the last ADCC. I think your criticism is unwarranted and don’t believe you do half the research you say you do. I think students do the necessary research to buy and invest in the program. the guy responds to your question and answers them in a very prompt timeframe based on timezone. Lastly I don’t think Gordon takes a guy that will be a total cakewalk, I think he takes a match that winnable in his but he’s business brand my guy. So he takes a match that should be entertaining and a bit of a challenge. Nuff said I will not be subscribing thanks!

Josh and his HPU program are awesome. I’ve only been in the program for a month and my BJJ has improved that much that training partners have been asking what I’ve done to change the way I roll so drastically in such a short time. I signed up to help with competition mindset but have got so much more out of it. Josh is the real deal and win, lose or draw it’s going to be a tough day at the office for Gordon Ryan.

What’s the point in trying to bring someone down? It’s a business, and Josh must capture the customer's attention. We all want to progress through the belt system as it’s a sense of achievement and skill level. It's genius in how he promoted his online programme. You can’t fault someone who wants to do well for himself. Secondly, I would have doubted whether the service wasn’t up to the best, as Josh said during his promotion of the programme. Thirdly, I’ve improved by JJ because it’s simple and effective. After all, it’s the same mistakes everyone else makes, and Josh can demonstrate swiftly either in personalised feedback or video content. I still attend my local JJ club, and half of the technical aspects are not taught at my club, and if it does, it’s not even close to the details that Josh teaches. I think it’s unfair if you haven’t participated in the programme and to judge someone just because you’ve read about him online. You believe what knowledge he can have in just 23 months, or it’s the weakness division or part of the world - not appropriate to say as you discredit all those athletes, including Josh. Finally, as Josh’s student, I would 100% promote his online programme, and I hope Josh is victorious in the fight and his business triumphant.

I've been in Josh's online program since November. I've seen consistent, month-over-month gains in skill. He's present with us daily, answering questions daily, recording videos daily. Posting seminars and jumping on calls with us. If I'm being honest I have no idea how he's this responsive and he has time to train as much as he does. It's the very first time I feel like I know what I'm supposed to do when grappling. When I go through open or positional rounds, I'm in total control for the first time since I've started training. He's shown me what Jiu Jitsu is *supposed* to look like at an elite level and I'm playing catch up as quickly as I can. He's GOATED in my view and he's replaced my coach.

I've seen so much more improvement in my game from Josh Saunders' HPU program, than from any training under my gym. Josh's attentiveness and hands-on approach make all the difference. Anything you have questions about or any videos you need reviewing of, he is the first person to always respond back with feedback. It’s really accelerated my progress in grappling. Highly recommend his online community for anyone looking to get good quick! You should definitely check out the program before saying anything on it. Respect your points and opinions but Josh ain’t any ordinary online coach and will be a great match between him and Gordon can’t wait !

Online coaching is only a ‘scam’ if you don’t put the work in imo You get given a clear plan to follow with the ability to ask questions on specific issues you’re having - it’s definitely helped me improve my jiu jitsu massively compared to the typical class structure of 3 random moves and see what sticks Similarly to online fitness coaching you could be given the worlds best plan but if you don’t put in the work and follow it, then yeah sure it’ll feel like a ‘scam’

Hey, I respect the concern for Josh Saunders but his knowledge and coaching is great! He understands how to coach and explain concepts for people who have no idea what there doing. Let’s not knock on someone who’s doing well for themselves. I’ve been in the program for a year now and it’s helped me a lot. Don’t knock something if you haven’t tried it..

Video clearly made im bad faith. I hopped on Josh’s program with the attitude “I’ll just pay for a month, and see if it’s anything close to what is advertised”. Didn’t think of canceling once since then. Much better approach than watching random instructionals. Like any other course, he can’t do the work for you, you have to put in the effort, but the value for money is beyond great.

The course is great, offering valuable information on planning, mindset, and making the right choices for your training. The community is even better, like a dedicated BJJ-focused place where you can ask questions and get detailed feedback, tips, and video instructionals. More content is added regularly, and the feedback from participants is 100% positive. The combination of quality instruction and a supportive community makes it an exceptional resource for improving BJJ skills. The detailed instruction, personalized feedback, and structured curriculum have significantly impacted my training. Online programs like this can often surpass traditional coaching methods. Join the class if not you cant disagree or say anything that’s irrelevant towards it.

HPU is legit. You get guided learning at your own pace and get quick responses to any technique questions you have. Much better value for money than buying instructionals imo and can cancel any time.
