He's strategically weak and tactically inept. He's gotten lucky. Luckier than he deserves to be. He makes it difficult for the team to win based on his managerial decisions. We can AND should be getting more from this team but Southgate is holding it back. He's got to go
You will notice the reason why we do so well in quals is because he only has the team for a week, so he cant put his stamp on them.
Notice the longer the tournament goes on the worse we play (defending deeper and lack of attack), look at the World Cup, we look like world beaters but the longer it went on, the more he was around them the worse they got because his tactics hindered them.
I bet most of these players when coming back will start slow and be in poor form because they will need time to shake off what Garath has taught them.

Well England are the Tottenham of international football, serial trophy dodgers.
Gareth has been lucky with his knockout routes in all 4 he has had. Which English manager has been that blessed? 86, 90, 96, 98 02, 04, 06, 10, 12. 2016 against Iceland was the only time we didn’t meet a big hitter.
Gareth Southgate: the best way to describe it is to imagine Prime Barcelona with Xavi, Iniesta, Messi not having Pep, and, say, Avram Grant having apologists who said it was good work to get them to 4 CL semis, but never over the line.
People may think it hyperbole to describe England that way, but not when you look at the teams fielded by many of the others in the tournaments. The teams they’ve been up against so far … the semis is the bare minimum. They have the player of the year from two of the top leagues on earth, the golden boot from a third, and those might not he their strongest players. The toughest team they’ve faced is Switzerland. Their current spot is bare minimum for a coach the takes in Oxygen.
Knowing England, as soon as you lot upgrade the coach you'll start getting unlucky draws and going out unluckily to elite teams in the early stages..😆😭

So yes lets give credit to Gareth for the penalty coaching well done............BUT against the level of opposition we have faced we should never have been there in the first place. I'll give him a little more credit, against the Swiss his formation worked for a while, critically it worked for Saka, it allowed us to feed Bukayu facing their LB in space 1v1.

However, he has to bear the responsibility for the teams performances which on the whole have been awful. Players played out of position, the refusal to use his bench to impact games before we go a goal down, continuing to pick players or not sub them who are clearly out of form. England effectively played with 10 men against the Swiss as Kane was a non entity for example.
We are in the Semi's not through luck, but through the brilliance and 2 players Jude and Bukayu. Two moments that saved Gareth and the team. That is their brilliance not Gareth's coaching or tactical and sub nouse.
He is a terrible coach, low IQ, with no courage. Even if England win the Euro's he should go, it will be in spite of Gareth not because of him. He just happens to have 3 maybe 4 players that can conjure up a moment for the team.

No way ! Look at the teams England was playing for example in the Euros 2020. And again this year. The had a piss easy group with Denmark,Serbia and Slovenia and still struggled. Then they get lucky against Slovakia and again against Switzerland. England is crap and as soon as you face a better team you will be exposed.

Football doesn't quite work that way. It is only natural that a weaker football team on paper beats a much better football team on paper. We see it every single weekend in the EPL. Explain Manchester United's 8th place last season in terms of the players the team has at its disposal. It shouldn't be possible, but that's football.

Can’t knock the record. The things I have issues with are as follows: not having a clear left sided alternative for shaw. The substitutions are reactive rather than proactive. The last maybe also a positive he is overly cautious and plays not to lose first.
The things you have to praise he has managed to get this England team to another semi final. He seems to have luck(skill) in getting through to the latter stages of a tournament avoiding bigger teams on way. He has learnt from last euros and has incorporated the possibility that a game goes to penalties and factors that in.
One last negative sticking with players even if they are not showing the form on pitch.
In finishing Southgate has done above average he needs to get over the line to elevate his status. He is probably a victim of his personality and the way he handles himself in press. He is not the greatest tactician but works within his capabilities and it works for him.

Funny no one is talking about how Saka and Bellingham have been pulling England through in this tournament, to me if England gets to the final and win, it would be about these two players and not southgate taking them all the way. My problem with South gate is that he is letting the pundits get to him, there were some players that didn't have any reason to still be in the starting line up after the first two games, not giving Palmer, and Eze more playing and the Aston Villa forward, foden, Kane, Walker have not been effective in this tournament.
Scoring one goal is not pulling England through the tournament. The manager is clearly clueless for not starting palmer.

At start of the tournament most fans would have said if England are to be successful it wouldn't be because of the manager. It would have been sadly in spite of the manager. So far it has played out that way. We have had a few magic moments from the players. The manager is to reactivate and whatever happens in England should move on from Southgate and his coaching staff. It's time for a change.
We are being a bit too harsh. International football is different n requires a different type of manager that were used to . However i think we've seen enough to show his style only gets us so far n everyone is eager for a change in manager
One thing that maybe fans don't acknowledge that much is that international football is not like club football. Yes England have a great squad but asking questions like "Why doesn't Foden play like he does for City?" or "How come Kane doesn't play like that for Bayern?" etc At club level you build relationships and tendencies based off of how much time you drill something and spend playing together. Tournaments are the longest period of time these players will be together all at once. Basic football is the foundation of it all - strong defence, keep possession, nick a goal. That's what most international teams do. Can England play better? Of course, but expecting them to play something that takes lots of time together and coaching to do, it's not as easy as it seems.
You might say that Austria had a set style. Spain have a set style. Austria had Rangnick as their head coach, the godfather of the RB school of tactics. I would guess a large percentage of that squad is brought up through that system making it so much easier to incorporate that style of play. Spain have built that style of play over the last 2 decades - all of that counts when trying to be coherent when playing.
A criticism I do think warranted at Southgate is team selection. Spain, Netherlands, France all select players based on what the team needs not based on names. Would Southgate risk playing Yamal? Would he play Weghorst over Kane if he felt it was needed? It's worth thinking about, are we looking at England and asking the right questions?
England fans are reminding me of Tottenham fans (I would rather loose to man city, and then win our last game to make top 4) but it never happen 😂.

I’m behind Southgate all the way. I wasn’t at first, but after the nil nils against Germany and Brazil (2017), and especially the 1-0 win in Amsterdam against Holland in 2018, I could tell he was doing a great job. Then all the tournament success came. I do consider it a success too because he took us on adventures where we had great times. I stand by him now. The Swiss game showed though, we are still liable to get pinned back and suffer in the second half and Southgate won’t make quick changes. Holland will be tough unless we can be clinical when in their box.

As far as best group of players, our midfield and defensive options are not the best in Europe or the world imo. They are over hyped in England because we focus on our own players. He’s had to play a lot of raw talent in this tournament

International teams of the past were a lot more challenging for England. If u look at it now they clearly have better players than the other nations. Look at terrible France and Italy are for eg and they have both won tournaments in recent history. It’s a much different era.

A lot of competitions like these are always stretched.. Most games end up in Extra Time.. Its not new.. Thats why its a competition.. Its because the best of the best are playing... Problem with the Englishmen is they just have no idea what they really want. Todays new world of technology allows every Jack and Jill to express their opinion even when its flawed. Until Englishmen get behind each other and support one another until the end, England will always fall short.
