- Hardy Eustace showed grit and determination to win the 2005 Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham, joining an elite group of horses to have won the race twice in the process.
Harchibald seemingly had his measure with 100 yards to run but once Paul Carberry asked for maximum effort, the six-year-old found little as Hardy Eustace knuckled down to win back-to-back renewals under Conor O'Dwyer.
O'Dwyer said afterwards: "Even if I'd given up, Hardy wouldn't have. He's seriously brave. I've never known a horse with so much guts."

RIP Harchibald.. great horse to watch, known as a bridle horse if I remember rightly.. 25, a good age for a horse ❤
What a division it was back then, that look from O'Dwyer as they were coming down the hill was class, he knew he wasn't going to get out battled up the hill 👌🏻
Absolutely loved this horse. What a partnership harchibald and paul carberry were.
One of the best champions hurdles ever. A fascinating race
Some great horses within that race
@@barrywhite730 a deep race.
Rip Hardy eustace a heart of a lion 🙏
i keep watching this race and one day it will win 🤷♂️ what a ride from a fantastically stylish jockey jamie spencer would be proud of this ride
What a race that was. Hardy Eustace held off Brave Inca and Harchibald.
RIP legend
Harchi. Madman
Back when the starters had brains
My argument against Carberry isn’t that Harchibald would have won if he’d done something different. It’s that he couldn’t possibly have won riding him the way he did.
Not only did he give the horse no time to respond to pressure, he actively restrained him from cruising past Hardy Eustace, especially when jumping the last.
How can a horse win unless you do something to put their head in front at some point? It’s impossible. He basically just accepted the horse was awkward, he didn’t play any cards.
Keith I remember this like it was yesterday, I told everyone & their granny to bet Harchibald but the horse had to be treated with kid gloves & Paul said in later year's that he just got there to soon, traveling away from the last flight it was as if the race was happening in slow motion!
This was one of the strongest fields I can remember assembled for a Champ Hurdle.
Worst thing was after my old man had bet Hardy Eustace the yr before at 40's I talked him into betting Harchibald despite him being the champion! 😂 but it was e/w so nothing lost but Harchibald despite his quirks was still a gd horse.
I know he was a hold up horse, but if Rooster was kept handy he would not have been far off. Remember this race well. I used to ride his sister back in the day and many other Riverwise horses.
Biggest set up ever
You are a bollix😂
Class
But archibald is cruising up on the bridle!!!!
An absolute dreadful start . Got a 6L HEADSTART ❤
Greatest loosing ride of all time
that was a horrendous ride, he gave the horse absolutely no chance to pick up and get in a race, worst ride I ever seen, any of the cocky so called experts on here that can't see that, omg, 🤭🤭🤣🤣
is it fair to say that he rode a peach until the last 100 yds .. as a punter u feel hard done by surely
Yeah as a punter you're gutted but the horse would pull up in front, also didn't find much off the bridle anyway, so if he kicked him on earlier he wouldn't have gone more than half a length, maybe three quarters in front cos his turn of speed wasn't there couples with his propensity to pull up in front you risk a horse coming back and dipping you on the line, he tried to ride it so the only place he lead was the last five meters, enough time to just get his head in front but not enough time to idle and let someone come back and dip him, hardy Eustace was just a super game horse
@@markholt7952 Yeh but with respect to Carberry, that’s just dumb. The horse was a neck down with 50 yards to go and no momentum because he was being restrained all the way up the run-in. Even if he did respond to pressure, he didn’t have time to. You’ve got to commit the horse at some point, or at least loosen the reins a bit!
Great ride but harccibald found nothing.
Anyone who thinks that Harchibald lost this race because of Paul Carberry goes to show they haven't got a clue!
Absolutely correct. HARCHIBALD was well known for travelling up on the bridle only to not go through with his effort. He was a great racehorse all the same. I remember this race like it was yesterday.
💯..always emptied when he came there traveling
@@alankelly2135re watch the 2007 Fighting fifth If that’s what you think…
It's you that doesn't have a clue, he gave it a terrible ride and waited to long.
@@frankmcnally01 You obviously don't know the enigma that is Harchibald. But hey, you are not the first! 😜
Harchibald…never found anything…was made to look better than he was by over the top ride…should have got a proper jock on…
He had one of the most talented jockeys to ever sit on a horse in Paul Carberry. He's human. People make mistakes. He could have started riding 2 or 300 yards before but he made up a huge amount over the last & didn't want to hit the front before the hill. The horse didn't have enough left anyway. Hardy Eustace was a beast & often made it look like hard work. I don't think Harchibald would have won anyway. I backed him that day and was a bit disappointed but he was beaten by a great horse.
Wdym it was Paul that made him go close
@@MarkSiosal agreed. I was on Harchibald too. Watching this race over and over, I’m convinced he still wouldn’t have won.
A proper jock, stay off the crack bruv lol
@@jamespage6628 well watch punchestown race couple of weeks later 😊
