Monster Hunter Rise PC vs Switch Comparison: PC Shines at 4K60FPS - But What Else Does It Add?

  • A year on from the Switch exclusive release of Monster Hunter Rise we have a PC port, bearing several key additions including resolution and frame-rate upgrades. The graphics menu promises much more however, in the form of higher-res texture packs and shadows - plus a solution to a slew of limits of the Switch edition Tom assesses the quality of a well-rounded, if relatively no-frills conversion to PC.

Think its just that good. It doesn't really need much else improvement at least from what i see. God they did so good with the style of the game. The art is so good. The few things like bit better textures and high frames is very good though. Ngl got it on my switch but forgot about it and never got past the menu. But recently got it on pc. And man the smooth fps is sooo nice. And love the game art style still!. If they ever add cross save ill 100% play it on my switch when on the go.

I play on switch and I Just couldn’t justify abandoning my hunter to move to pc. The improvements are decent but not worth redoing all that time. IF they would have put in cross save it would have been a day 1 purchase. Big missed opportunity by capcom as they lost a sale and I doubt im the only one. Also it just doesnt look that much better honestly. It looks like a switch game on pc.

While it's nice to know how the top spec machines handle, I think you've looked at this back-to-front.
The main comparisons here should have been with low-mid spec PCs to show how well it can run on those systems. The 'Recommended' GPU on Steam is a 1060 3GB, with a 1030 as the 'Minimum', and it given how great the game is on Switch anyway, it would have been most useful for people with less powerful/expensive systems to know what they needed to get a decent 1080/60 fps presentation which would allow them to comfortably enjoy this great game.
EDIT: And comparisons on those low-spec machines with MHW might have been interesting as I suspect that the older game is much more demanding even on low settings.

I personally hate it when we get a PC version and they only look at really low-end hardware, I want to see what my high-end hardware can do.
That said, I think the obvious solution is to address both! Show us what a GTX 980 Ti and an RTX 3090 can do, and maybe an inbetween card to boot. I think seeing a nice spread of PC hardware playing the game gives people a really good idea of what to expect.

I think it's important to say that the reason Capcom got rid of Kinematics, mentioned as walking animation in this video, is because it's CPU heavy and the Nintendo Switch is fairly CPU bound/limited even compared to the XBox One and PS4 and especially PC. The other main reason is that monsters that "slide" like Leviathans, and few others, don't walk on four or two legs , which would be the points computed with Kinematics, but instead their entire bodies and that causes a CPU bottleneck which the XBox One and PS4 couldn't overcome and the Nintendo Switch wouldn't/can't either and why some popular monster didn't appear in World, the PC could overpower that limit but I don't think Capcom would release monsters only on one platform on a multi platform game, even the PC. So I don't see or think that Kinematics will return, at least for the next titles and or console generations, but it's possible. :)

7:37 Small addendum, while the FPS-Halving is removed on enemies, Endemic life (the lil birds that you collect) are still affected by it - you can even see it on the green Vigorwasp in that PC shot.
10:48 Sadly, somewhat inaccurate. MOST cutscenes remain locked at 30fps, as in 90% of them well into the endgame. However, you can circumvent that with a mod called RiseTweaks which allows the cutscenes to render at your selected settings.

For anyone wondering, I mainly play this on my gaming laptop with a rtx 3060 but have also tried it on my gpd win 3. It's the 1165g7 version with 96 eus on Intels iris xe integrated graphics. With a custom bat file to run the chip at 35 watt tdp (instead of the stock max of 28 watts) I can get a solid 60 fps at 1080p with 150% resolution scale and almost everything on high except for mesh detail and with foliage sway off. It plays amazing and it was really shocking to see it run at 60 fps 1080p on integrated graphics. It's a credit to both iris xe and how well the RE engine scales for lower end hardware. I was a bit skeptical when they released the system requirements because the recommended gtx 1060 only giving 1080p 30 fps seemed a bit conservative considering the immensely less powerful switch could run it at over 720p 30 fps.
TLDR: Anyone running more modern integrated graphics should be able to play this have at 60 fps with a few tweaks at a decent resolution

As someone that regularly goes back and plays older games from the series there is one thing that the PC version unfortunately can't do out of the box, and that is supply functional multiplayer after the servers get taken offline. The PSP, 3dS, and Switch games all support local connection, meaning that if you have RL friends that play, you can still hunt together without hoping someone in the emulation scene will write network functionality into an emulator, and that someone will figure out how to get around the master server issues.
World will be only the 3rd game in the series where multiplayer will cease to be available when Capcom decides to kill the servers. This alone makes it a disappointing title in many ways, despite the other improvements it made.
Oh, and Rise PC also uses Denuvo. That's disappointing too.
    Still looks nice though.

    • @Xbob42
      @Xbob42 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

True, it can't do it out of the box... but you don't get into PC gaming just for what games can do officially out of the box. No games are kept alive and online longer than PC games with dedicated communities. I have full confidence I'll be able to play online with my friends on PC in 30 years, provided we're all still alive and electricity and the internet still exists. I'm not even sure I'd still have my Switch (or any Switch) in good working form in 30 years, let alone enough for us to all get together and play a local match.
I mean, you only need to look as far as Phantasy Star Online!
That said, I would never say no to proper, official local multiplayer support on PC, my point wasn't to denigrate that, just that I think that's a bit of a short-sighted view.

Monster Hunter, Monster Hunter G, Monster Hunter Dos, and Monster Hunter Tri had all their online content lost when the servers were shut down. Thanks to private servers you can play Monster Hunter and Monster Hunter G online again, and the other two are able to accessed but only solo currently. Private servers are being worked on.
Luckily with World, once the servers go down, the content itself is still accessible excluding event quests. DRM still sucks though

I'd imagine any old or low end PC could easily do 1440p 60fps or really low end could do 1080p 60. For 120+ you'd want a 3600 or better as it gets single core CPU heavy.

I haven’t dug in with this yet because I’m playing God of War (and Monster Hunter takes over my life once I start ;). I’m actually happy that this is pretty much just a straight port of a lightweight game that simply runs smoother and at higher resolutions. It feels like a Nintendo game, I can’t explain it, but it gave me nostalgia when I played the opening hours.

Asides from framerate and native rendering resolution there's virtually barely ANY difference. It's pretty hard to notice the foilage swaying, seems like a lazy port when considering it's console brethrens drawbacks.

Comparing the switch with a pc is as ridiculous as comparing a pc with a switch. Nonetheless the differences don’t show this, obviously this is a port and has no pc quality, so release it on Xbox so I don’t need to plug my switch back.

I have a 1300 hour 100% save on switch and without cross saves I just can’t justify it

No DLSS here seems like a missed opportunity. WIth all the foliage, temporal stability would really get a boost from DLSS/DLAA as well as allowing more cards to reach high fps, more consistently. Hoping maybe the plan is for Sunbreak to add raytraced AO/reflections and DLSS features?

Maybe but with how light the game is I wonder if DLSS does make any sense.
My sister runs this on a GTX970 at 1080p with mostly max settings at 60fps, meanwhile World needed a combination of low/medium to achieve barely the same.
What I mean is that cards that support DLSS have plenty of power to run this, if anything FSR would make more sense here.

Comparing a PC to a Switch is like comparing a Ferrari to a tricycle.

I just cant bring myself to pay full price for a hand held game, ported to pc. Lets be honest, the graphics look trash. If you want to play a switch game in 4k, this is the pc port for you. If graphics matter to you, play monster hunter world, It at least looks like a game made in this decade.

I wanted to buy this so freaking bad but they lost me when they didn't bring cross saves. I have 160 hours in to rise on my switch. The hell if I am starting that all over again. My buddies all said they will stick to playing on Switch as well. That means at least 5 sales of the game on PC were lost because of not having cross saves. Hades has cross saves on Switch to steam. So I am sad that they didn't do it and they lost my money for the PC release.

He was obviously referring to MHrise and not the whole MH series, ultimately the comparison here is between the 2 MH games running under the RE engine. His paragrah started at 11:00 clearly referring to MHrise Whether it was intentional or not, omiting "rise" to his statement says he's either sloppy at his work or purposely click baiting statements... but i doubt it's the latter.

they should have worked on the polygons in the PC version.
it's very weird to see high texture quality on such "square" models.

"With as much performance on PC as it needs", this mindset of a LOT of PC Gamers (more specifically PCMasterRace subscribers) really irks me.
Whilst the average gaming desktop is more powerful than a Switch, that DOESN"T mean that assuming that everybody has a beast of a PC when they are running games is correct.
Heck, I started gaming on a Pentium 4 with integrated graphics cards, moved on to Core 2 Duo and stayed there for a decently long time. Most of the times I was gaming at 800x600 resolution.
Even if something comes to PC, all those configurations ARE part of PC gaming want it or not. PC Gaming isn't all RGB liquid COOLED Titan Threadripper $5000 wetdream.
Me despite having a decent rig for most stuff am still on a few year old Omen laptop with GTX 1060. With launch of 30 series it was a good time to upgrade as 20 series simply did not seem worth it, but the scalping situation and DLSS has flipped that around SO much that even an RTX 2060 is pretty decent deal.
Not to mention, the fact that this game literally comes from a low-powered handheld and is OPTIMIZED for such. So not testing it for handheld stuff like Aya Neo or just weaker stuff, as Steamdeck IS literally the next big thing in PC gaming despite being pretty weak, is KINDA tonedeaf really.
The people who like to pretend that PC is ALL about that $5000 Threadripper Titan builds and it's all good in PC Candyland with no issues REALLY irk me the most. As if I didn't have a random BSOD yesterday on my PC after I woke it from hibernation. Shit is amazing, but not perfect. Calling it anything is a disservice to all those who debug, diagnose and fight all the flaws of the PC. Including GabeN, who fought PC Piracy, the biggest flaw for PC Gaming Industry, and kinda won even.

Seeing this after the leaked Pokémon Arceus pics really puts into perspective how much the switch can handle and how poorly Game Freak has been with their games

Sadly capcom downgrade the graphic to be more handheld since in japan they like their handheld console and play where they feel it right comparison wise i don't really see the difference other then 60 FPS graphic wise it kinda look the same but i might be wrong
