    Great instrument. I got to own it someday..
    It's more like a real instrument + unique sounding, dynamic and "organic".
    As opposed to dead cold samples

    This sounds wonderful. I ordered one that arrives this afternoon. I play dununs and djembe but also have a modular synth, which I haven't been able to get the distinctly different sounds to mesh. Hoping the electronic sounds here will mesh with the modular well. Thanks for the demo.

    GREAT REVIEW! Best on youtube re the NORD ! I was teetering between buying this because size wise its easy to tour with and the Roland HPD20 - You are the only reviewer that has succinctly explained the difference between The Nord 3 and say a Roland HPD 20 .From my perspective I could not use this because its just to 808 sounding , the Roland HPD has really useable sounds and kits by the bucket load .
    I have been using my Roland Octaopad30 for the last 2 years - done 600 shows but I wanted something a little easier to travel with.
    I think the majority of the sounds on the NORD sound like dodgy 80s PC Atari games.LOL

    HI Phil! Great demo!! Love the sounds! Many reviews complain about the noise floor of the internal reverb? What was your impression, is it disturbing in any way? Is this still an issue? Have you used the internal effects for this demo? Thanks in advance :)

    • @PhilPardell
      @PhilPardell  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks for the kind words! I personally haven't had a problem with the reverb noise floor, though I don't do a ton of recording with this and I don't go too crazy with the amount of reverb anyway. I may have put reverb on a portion of one of the videos where I get into making custom sounds or claps/snaps. On this stock sounds video many of the preset sounds have reverb on them. I do like the variety of reverbs and you really can tweak the tone and amount applied. Hope that helps!

    Hi Phil
    i’ve owned both the spds,and the spd30. Had to sell them both because the pads weren’t responsive enough. So, even at the greatest sensitivity settings the pads would only reliably trigger if they were hit right in the center. ( i had Drumkat controller which was perfectly sensitive anywhere within the pad zone. The Nord seems to be very good that way from you demo......what do you think?

    • @PhilPardell
      @PhilPardell  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Dave,
      I know what you mean about digital drum pads and I've found the Nord to be very responsive to dynamics. I feel like it is one of the main elements that makes it feel almost like an acoustic instrument with certain tones. I've also been pleased with its dynamic response for controlling software instruments in a DAW via usb or MIDI.

  • @brentgreeff1115
    @brentgreeff1115 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Can you record all your pads into different midi tracks at the same time? record midi into ablation for instance? I know this has got limited audio outputs.

    • @PhilPardell
      @PhilPardell  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The midi on the drum3p is pretty extensive, you can send each pad to a different midi channel, use cc messages, even hook up a midi controller (with assignable knobs/faders) to control multiple parameters. I have used it to control software drums and it has excellent dynamic nuance. I've also hooked up sequencers and synthesizers to it too. This should be a link to the manual which has more in depth info about MIDI:
      www.nordkeyboards.com/sites/default/files/files/downloads/manuals/nord-drum-3p/Nord%20Drum%203P%20English%20User%20Manual%20v1.x%20Edition%20C.pdf

      @@PhilPardell - wow, thx, thats great. - I guess I could jam out on the pads, -record midi into ableton, then use those tracks to play a different physical drum synth. - I like the sounds the 3p makes, but I was worried it might not be exactly what I wanted to finally record - so this makes it perfect as a tool for getting down ideas- although the sounds are pretty good.

    can i connect it to a MIDI Keyboard and trigger from the keyboard? and what about studio use?

    • @PhilPardell
      @PhilPardell  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can connect a keyboard through midi and trigger sounds from the keyboard. Each sound is its own voice though, so you’d be controlling one sound in a monophonic manner. There might be some slick midi hardware that allows you to split into polyphony but I haven’t quite figured that out as of now 🙂. It works great as a dynamic set of pads to control software drums/percussion in a DAW rig or to just record the stereo output from the Nord too.

      @uncoiledfish2561 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@PhilPardell You can use this through software? And control samples? Is that what you’re saying? I would buy this is a heartbeat if there was a way I could play my samples through this as well as use it’s own drum synths.

    • @PhilPardell
      @PhilPardell  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@uncoiledfish2561 As long as you can hook up to your computer through MIDI cables and make custom settings in your software you should be able to use the Drum3p as a MIDI controller. You should be able to run the audio outs from the nord and your computer to have both sounds too.

    • @PhilPardell
      @PhilPardell  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yah a built in sequencer would be super cool. I've hooked up a synth with a sequencer through midi to the nord and it's pretty fun. Really frees you up to tweak sounds as it repeats.

    • @Claidheambmor
      @Claidheambmor ปีที่แล้ว

      But then if it had a sequencer built in the beautiful interface would be marred by additional complexity. With the Nord Drum series, YOU are the sequencer. Though I sequence my Nord Drum 2 with an Oxi One which is such a fun combination.

    Are there straight ahead Jazz and enough Latin, Cuban, African, etc. sounds for a Jazz gig? Are they organized with names, or is it just "sound #X, sound #Y, sound#Z, etc.? Thank you and you have nice technique! P.S.: I'm a saxophone player.

    • @PhilPardell
      @PhilPardell  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Drum 3p might not be the one for you if you are trying to replicate acoustic drums and percussion for jazz. There's no kit titles for the sound sets, just letter banks with each kit in that set identified by number (like A23). The letter categories seem to be organized by theme, some geared more to sound effects, others to electro kits, others to melodic etc.. A sample based pad like the Roland SPD-SX or the Alesis Strike Multipad might be more what you're looking for. Hope that helps and thanks!

    • @JeffreySaxophoneTallNewton
      @JeffreySaxophoneTallNewton 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@PhilPardell Thank you for the reply, Phil! I did notice some straight-ahead sounds on the Nord, but also many more "electronic" type and melodic percussion sounds as you note. However, the percussive sounds have an "aliveness" and"" realism" (maybe it's dynamics) to them that the sample-based ones do not. I play piano in addition to saxophone, and use the modeling Pianotec for the same reason. I have the same view that Morten, who posted below, has. Also, I busk, and the Nord is half the weight of the Alesis Strike (the Nord's main competitor for me). I would agree that the Strike has more Jazz sounds (and everything else; 7000 of them, and one can load in one's own samples). Also the ability to use a hi hat pedal. Pity that no unit that combines the best of both exists!

    • @PhilPardell
      @PhilPardell  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JeffreySaxophoneTallNewton it’s true, the Nord’s synthesized sound design approach gives you extremely expressive dynamics and an almost real acoustic instrument sound. You certainly do some jazz gigs with it especially if it’s approached as a unique instrument. There really are almost unlimited customizable sounds and textures you can create and save too. You can also hook it up to other devices and computers with MIDI, so it can control software instruments or samples on a laptop or other MIDI device. It would be cool if it had a couple more pads and a hi hat pedal trigger input too 👍

    • @JeffreySaxophoneTallNewton
      @JeffreySaxophoneTallNewton 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@PhilPardell I think the hi hat trigger port omission is a big screw up! Hey, can one use the singular port for a hi hat trigger pedal instead of for bass drum? I would be using this (or the Alesis) with a looper, so I could just loop the hi hat, whether I trigger it by foot or drum stick. For me, the idea is the complete "one man band" - sax, piano (my first instrument, although sax is my main one), bass (I play guitar and bass too) and drums (I studied African drums in music school). I note the Alesis has a looper, but it's only 16 bars with no sequential loop feature, so I'll use a loop pedal or iPad Group the Loop (which is fantastic). I suppose the Nord can control iPad drum sounds too? I can actually see buying both the Nord and the Alesis, but the Nord "inspires" me, whereas the Alesis just does not. I mean sounds, not features!

    • @PhilPardell
      @PhilPardell  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JeffreySaxophoneTallNewton If I remember correctly, the pedal port just corresponds to the first pad/channel on the Nord, so whatever sound you have assigned to that pad will be triggered by the pedal input. I believe the Nord should work with most MIDI devices out there as long as you have a midi cable that can connect to it, I know you can get a midi cable that will terminate in an iPad connection for this. From there I think it depends on the midi capabilities of the app. I've run mine through looper pedals and sequencers with some great results. The sequencer option is fun because you can have it just go and continue to tweak the sounds as it runs. The a looper was fun for the endless layering. I feel you on the inspiration factor haha that's exactly why I got the Nord over the Roland pad :)

The previous version was also sold as just a brain with more trigger inputs but doesn't have some of the effects and functionality of the 3P version if I'm remembering right. If you get a ddrum DDTi trigger interface (usually around $150) you can hook it up through MIDI and have up to 10 triggers controlling the 6 sounds though if multiple triggers are a priority.

      Cool, can you send midi to trigger different notes on a single pad for tuned stuff?

    • @PhilPardell
      @PhilPardell  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      From my experience each pad represents a midi channel (1-6). If you have a trigger triggering say pad 2 through the DDTi it will just be triggering what every sound/pitch you have pad 2 set at. However, I have noticed you can change the pitch (midi note) the DDTi sends to that pad. So you could have your trigger produce a different pitch than what pad 2 is set at with the same sound. If you were using a similar tone on all the pads and just wanted more pitches of that sound from some other triggers or pads hooked up to the DDTi, you could have 10 additional pitches if you have that many pads/triggers.
