RoboCop - Caravan of Garbage

  • The original RoboCop from 1987 is incredible. Directed by Paul Verhoeven and starring Peter Weller as the titular RoboCop/Alex Murphy it remains one of the best sci-fi films of all time. With its retro futuristic, satirical and hyper-violent aesthetic it truly is a one of a kind experience that will never be replicated. Despite RoboCop 2, RoboCop 3, the 2014 reboot, the two tv series, multiple games and upcoming legacy sequel. Thanks for watching!

    The satire of Robocop is pretty funny and on point. But the heart of the movie is the story of a man whose humanity was stolen from him and how he slowly gains it back. Also he shoots that one guy in the dick and that’s great.

    Robocop feels oddly timeless despite being a time capsule of 80s action movies. Like, despite the fashion and dialogue being very of it's time, there's almost a feeling of "this is like it's own world" and you want more of it. On top of that, I think the sci-fi aspects of it hold up well. Not too far fetched, but grounded enough to feel like this could happen in our lifeitme. Also, playing the Rogue City game recently, it really did drive home how much of it holds up. It's by no means a perfect game, but it's a great robocop experience, and it gave more of that world that I enjoyed so much. More over, I felt like the police uniforms, hair styles, and dialogue held up quite well.

    What I really love about this movie is that it has so much rewatch-ability and there’s just so many little details and references hidden in the background.
    For instance, in the scene that takes place in the mom-and-pop store, you can see not only an Ironman comic from 1966 in the background but also the comic book "ROM The Space Knight” which also involves a brutally slain character whose organs are harvested and placed into a robot in order to save his people.
    Also, during the scene where Murphy's son Jimmy watches the movie Blue Thunder on TV in a flashback, issue 41 of ROM can be seen on the floor at his feet.
    Fun fact: these seemingly innocuous references eventually led several members of the production team to jokingly refer to the movie as Blue Harvest which was also coincidentally the working title for the 1977 film Star Wars.

    It's a weird feeling ... I was 18 when I saw this in the theatre in 1987 (so, technically already an adult, I suppose), and I remember thinking, "Wow, that ED-209 effect was great!" And I guess that compared to what came before ... it *was*. I think the key was that it was *new*, and it's only now that I've seen much more "realistic" killer battle-mechs in countless games and movies that I see how comparatively janky it was. Novelty really did account for a lot of what we appreciated in older sci-fi live-action, and maybe some recent movies can seem pedestrian despite having excellent VFX because so little of it feels "new" any more. In short, we've been kind of spoiled lately.

    Did you know in early production for Robocop, Paul Verhoeven wanted the titular character to be in more distinct colours to identify him as a member of law enforcement?
    However, this led to some tension from local officers who felt this would lead to potential aggression towards the police, so they drained the blue from Robocop's armour, which gave the film the working title of 'Blue Harvest' - which was also the working title for Star Wars.

    I might be wrong, but I think another reason for films like this getting popular with kids was because, in the US at least, they were broadcast on TV channels, usually edited down to about a PG, sometimes PG-13 level. Another neat thing about this is that those versions were also an early vector for viewing deleted or alternate scenes. To this day I believe there are a select few scenes that have only survived thanks to people recording TV edits of films onto VHS tapes and then eventually uploading them to the internet. There are probably still a few waiting to be rediscovered, so if you are reading this and you have old VHS recordings of TV broadcasts of films, you may have something rare and unique on your hands!

  • @LilMally243
    @LilMally243 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Talking about the movement and I feel like that and the face are what sold this as a believable thing. But I think it's funny how in T1 Arnold said his strategy was first turn the head, then move the eyes, because that's what a robot would do. Main motion followed by exact motion. In T2, Robert said he would first turn his eyes to the side, then turn his head, because that's what a robot would do. Start with the smallest component and work up trying to minimaze output. And while both did a great job they don't compare to Peter's jerky legs and constantly pivoting head.

    "Dead or Alive, your coming with me." This is the Iconic & original Robocop as portrayed by Peter Weller. Robocop ironically was inspired by Judge Dredd. It's not ironic that director Paul Verhoeven didn't return for the sequel because the story really is a one off and ends at the end of the first movie. It's a shame that there never was a RoboCop Vs Terminator crossover. Yes it was Verhoeven wife who convinced him to do the movie 🍿 as she said the killing of Murphy and his resurrection as Robocop is symbolic of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ followed by his resurrection.

    The interesting thing about the Robocop suit is that, because of the way it was designed, it actually took longer to remove than it did to put on. During screen tests, Weller jokingly referred to this laborious process as "harvest time" and it led to the the film receiving the working title of "Blue Harvest."
