Years ago I posted off the v1.65 EPROM from the earlier black model Steinberg SMP24, to someone who then copied it to a few blank EPROMs and gave me a spare along with the BIN file firmware dump. I added the red SMP II not long after and so both could work with Cubase 2.0. I guess your SMP24 already has this firmware version as its running on Cubase in your video.

Hi, yes I believe the SMP24 needs the newer 1.65 ROM to work properly with Cubase. Thankfully the one I bought about 20 years ago had this already applied. They are a brilliant add-on when using Cubase with multiple MIDI devices! :)

This is a great track! It's inspiring to see these old tools still being used in a productive and solid way. It even makes me feel slightly guilty of when I sometimes complain about something with my Logic Pro X :D

Thanks so much for listening and the comments. Ive still to finish this track. Hasnt been loaded up since I took this video, but I will be doing a v2 of it. Modern DAW's are really great. I do love using the Atari though!! :D

@@acidieus Looking forward to hear it! And I imagine it’s great to use Cubase Atari ST to produce, as it puts you in context of how some producers in the 90s made music. :)

@@beepstI've been using Cubase on ST since the early/mid 90's and it's what I started writing electronica on. The real reason to me why it's so good, is that it's an amazingly complex piece of software running on a very reliable OS. Zero distractions when using it.. and the ST metronome sticks out like a sore thumb! It works exactly the same and as reliably as it did in the 90s... plus I'm able to load up my old dirge music from the 90s and work on it again exactly as I'd left it... so it's kinda like a time machine as well!! :D
Modern DAW and hardware is really impressive. I do like working within the limitations of the older hardware though... and also that (most) hardware isnt as expensive now as it was in the 90s!!

Good morning. I just discovered your channel and I love it. I was offered an Atari ST 520 and I would like to run it with my machines (Yamaha RM1X, Yamaha SU200, and Yamaha MD4S. Plus other small effects). Do you think this is possible, or is it a bad idea? Thank you for your inspiring channel!!!

as long as your "machines" do support OG MIDI, then yes, why not. Be sure your ST will have 1MB RAM for Cubase 2.0 or older, and 2,5+MB for Cubase 3.x. If your ST comes for free, then good, if you are shopping for one, get the STE no matter what version (can be upgraded via SIMMs). When you shop for Cubase, be sure to get the cartridge dongle (software can be downloaded for free) and/or MIDI /SMPTI ports multiplicators like MIDEX+.
You also probably will need to get MIDI DIN5 to USB adapter, since modern tools often lack DIN5 ports. I also recommend some HDD replacement for you, like Ultrasatan mini, easy to use SD Card based, makes work much more convenient then just using the floppy all the time.
