This tutorial is excellent. I always get blurry eyed reading Apple's written instructions. This tutorial takes the guess work out of the format instructions. I will be looking to your Time Machine tutorial next. Thank You. SUBSCRIBED!

Great video. My time machine craps out at about 2gigs on the backup. Wondering if its the way the drive was formatted. I didnt format it in the view you used, i just formatted to Journaled at the top level. Trying to do a TM backup of an old laptop to restore to new one as the wireless migration assistant keeps failing.

Thank you for the excellent video! I have one issue, however. At first, you erased the top drive under external the one called WE Elements. Then the second time when you went to do the partitions you clicked the one below the top one, called Untitled 2. I am very confused about which one of these you use in different scenarios. For instance, if I want the entire drive for time matching I erase the top one or the second one?

What about APFS? Does the time capsule have to be formatted to the same file system and scheme that the OS's drive is formatted to? I think the latest versions of Mac OS automatically format the drive to APFS, don't they?

I watched your video and set up the time machine, but I gave too much space for time machine 3TB and only 1TB for pc, so can I increase pc size without formatting, or do I have to do this again by formatting my hard drive?
By the way your video is the best on this topic, so thank you

Great tutorial, Thank you! I have a 4T Seagate external hard drive partitioned in 2. One for Time Machine, the other for old but important works. TimeMachine stopped working so I decided to reformat that partition but it didn't work. Disk Utility gives me error (-69488). I tried erasing the partition to recover the 4T but had no results. :-(
Forgot to mention that the second partition (2T) works fine...

But when I went to archive the option achiev journaling was unlit. So i don't know how to proceed now, can I repair the seagate and begin from scratch?

HI, question if I want to transfer all data from a current hard drive ( time machine and mac partition data) to a new hard drive will I just need to copy paste everything and transfer it on the new hard drive ? and for the time machine will it be okay to do the same or just completely wipe it instead ?

    • @TechandDesign

Can I format a timemachine back up drive, erase it and start new ? Or does the time machine back up drive (external) have something to stop me erasing it/formatting it ? I ask as I now use Catalina and want to free up space from sierra.

Hi, guys! I'm in huge trouble and I would really need your help. I had the Time Machine partition set up for Mac backup and another partition which I was using for photos and videos (i am a photographer). I don't know how I ended up switching the photo partition to time machine backup and erase everything on it. Is there any way to reverse this? Please, I had over 20.000 photos on it :( Thank you!
