    Absolutely amazing; with the limited color palette and glowing effects, I'd even go so far as to say haunting. Definitely not something I'd ever want to see coming out of the dark towards me.

    Man this one of the best painting tutorial I’ve seen. You have smooth way of explaining what you are doing. I liked how you mixed your paint on the wet pallet. The end result was awesome. Thanks for sharing. I will be watching more.

    More of these please... the way you blend lighting is amazing, I'd like to see more of those fantasy miniatures with lanterns... when I saw your Darth Vader, I watched you slap orange and red on the leg and helmet and was so scared then it turned out amazing

      Thanks wildboy! (I covered the lantern-carrying figures in episode one in case you weren't aware: th-cam.com/video/GFnlr_zF7rU/w-d-xo.html) Ha ha - yes, I sometimes do things that first look like I've ruined the mini but turn out OK in the end :)

      Hey, thank you for the cracking tutorials. A lot of TH-camrs tell you what they did without the how or the why. While your skills are clearly awesome, it's so good to see your techniques explained in such a way that is (theoretically) doable. These are easily my favourite painting tutorials online. And you write the music, boom! Keep up the good work, Sorastro!

    I see a lot of people saying how they hate the sculpture of the White Lion and that people replace theirs with other more realistic models, and while at first I thought it looks fairly derpy, I noticed all of the models have sort of a similar style and I began to like it (maybe for the wrong reasons though?). It reminds me of some of those dark children's books that kids would get back in the 80's that I can't remember most of the names of - Where the Wild Things Roam is one of them, but there were others. Books that were potentially haunting in the eyes of a child, where everything has slightly human characteristics, but mostly characteristics of things that would terrify.
    Apologies for the ramblings of a crazy person, I just wanted to share my thoughts :)

    Really admire and appreciate your videos! I am struggling with the white lion right now, as I have been unable to conceal the lines on his back. I’ve stripped the prime twice now; the first to remove green stuff I since it was just too chunky and unsmooth. The second time I tried using Matt varnish to cover them up. I applied 8 layers, yet still when I went to prime - they showed up!! How did you manage to conceal these lines on the lions back???

    • @Sorastro
      @Sorastro  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Hmm I'm not 100% sure as it was a few years back when I assembled the White Lion, but I think I used Green Stuff, just very sparingly and smoothed down as far as I can using wet tools/finger.. :)

    Stunning blending and very effective limited color choice.
    I noticed you're using a wet palette that looks like the Redgrass Everlasting one. As I'm a backer of the KS and will soon receive it, and being it my very first wet palette, do you have any hints and tips about it?

    • @Sorastro
      @Sorastro  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! Regarding the wet palette I'm not sure I have much to say as it's pretty easy to use; I just add a generous amount of water to the spongy part and tip some of the excess out, then apply the membrane on top. After a couple of moments the membrane will wrinkle slightly as it absorbs the water so I'll then push the bubbles and wrinkles out, and I'm good to go! :)

  • @richardhalford4438
    @richardhalford4438 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Really like the work and blending. Good work on the glow around the eyes. The only thing that looked out of place is the face outline. It looks like the ink was a little too dry or thick when doing the face outline creating an almost drawn line around thd face. Perhaps some medium mixed in with the ink woud have brought a more subtle shadowing/softer blend line which would go with the rest of the painting. Loved the wet blending workad the idea of a first rough out before putting in more shades.

  • @gordon5082

    Hey Sorastro, quick question about the base: Can I use Citadel's Stirland Mud instead of the Vallejo basing paste or does the paste entail some sort of glue that helps stick the slate parts together? Thanks for the help!

    • @Sorastro
      @Sorastro  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Gordon! The slate was actually mostly stuck together by the Green Stuff (and the wire pin) rather than the basing paste, but yes - I believe Stirland Mud is very similar to the Vallejo basing pastes. 😀

    Hi Sorastro your work has inspire me to do miniature painting so thank you, I have questions regarding the Lion, did you used the same green stuff in the rocks as you did to fill the gaps or liquid green stuff, and I don't have titanium white I have ceramite white and dead white which of those would you recommend to use for the Lion and the survivors, thank you!

    • @Sorastro
      @Sorastro  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Miguel! Yes I used the regular Green Stuff to fill the gaps on the lion and not the liquid stuff. Regarding the whites, I don't think there's much between them to be honest but I might favour the Dead White over the Ceramite White which I find to be a little on the chalky side :)

      Thank you! I actually produced a behind-scenes video on Patreon detailing how I shoot the KDM minis, but I basically use some black foam board as the back drop, but tilted forwards so as to reflect virtually no light and produce a natural gradient of light to dark on the board. I'm currently shooting with the Panasonic Lumix GH5 with Leica 12-60mm lens (usually fully zoomed in) :)

    Hi Sorastro, late to the party but once again inspired by your wonderful tutorial. I have a question: is your Titanium White oil based (like mine is) and if so, how did you mix it with the other water based paints? Doesn't the oil reject and separate from the water?

    So how does Sorastro get the colours as seamlessly blended as he does in the first stage of blocking in the colours? When I try to blend colours to a gradient I can't seem to get it to smoothly transition. A couple common things that seem to happen: One colour seems to dominate or muddy the other, the paint is too thin(?) so it doesn't provide enough coverage and I don't think I'm supposed to blend the same spot 10 times, or the paint is thick enough that it gets ridges.
    Any thoughts? Similar experiences?
    I've started learning how to paint solely to work towards KDM. This work really is quite fantastic and a great exemplar.

    • @Sorastro
      @Sorastro  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Garnet! A couple of thoughts from me: 1) Regarding consistency, for wet blending I usually go quite thick, so thin the paint just enough to avoid leaving ridges but no thinner. 2) Start by mixing just a small amounts of the paint to see if one ends up dominating as you put it, then find the sweet spot in terms of how much of one to mix into the other. 3) I obviously edit the videos to get them to flow well; in reality there's a bit more "back and forth" than you can see in the final edit until I have the gradient how I like it. I hope this helps a little! :)

    Do you use zenithal priming just to make a clear mark where to highlight or does if affect the colours as well?

    • @Sorastro
      @Sorastro  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Lau! The answer is "both"; yes - the zenithal highlights do a nice job of mapping out the highlights for us, but they also allow us to more easily achieve a wide range of levels in our base colours. If it was just primed in black for example I'd have to work harder to achieve the lighter tones on the top of the figure. :)

    This series is amazing! I am waiting for my copy of 1.6 to arrive and these videos hype me so much and give lots of inspiration! Do you always apply a varnish over all the miniatures after the painting is done? Doesn't that mess with the colours, metal effects, etc? • @Sorastro
      @Sorastro  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Benny! Inks can be used in lots of ways and I've only really dabbled with them so far myself; yes they do have an intense level of depth and saturation, but also have a thin consistency which makes them somewhat unique. These inks also have quite a glossy finish which helps increase the sense of depth and makes them especially effective when adding that final bit of depth in the shadows :)
