To everyone asking if you need a base coat, you don't really need one but it does help create a good foundation for your actual sticky wax to grip and form on. I've done this countless times with and without a basecoat. The only difference is that with a basecoat the main wax does go on a little better. The most important thing is doing the slashes to create the diamonds and then applying a good even coat, this will ensure that you have a good, grippy even wax job. And to everyone saying you only need to wax a board every few times you go surf are tripping. You should at least give your board a little wax job every time before you go surf. Nothing more annoying than slipping all over the place when you could've just spent 30 seconds waxing your board before you go out. Just figured id help y'all out and drop my 2 cents. Also don't let your wax melt in the sun, keep your board flipped over and out of the sun when you're not in the water.
Thank god I just got a new board and forget to use basecoat was really worried I was gone have to strip the wax off and start anew but thanks to your comment I don't have to
I have watched this video a few times over the years. It is always the best wax job for me. I use the base coat but do not mind the xtra work and small cost for slightly better grip. I need it.
After you have drawn the little 'diamonds', do you need to wait a while for it to dry before you go on or can you just immediately continue rubbing over it? Cool board by the way!
i just waxed a new board with a basecoat and topcoat. i did the basecoat like he describes here and then at the finishing touch part at 2:35, i switched to the top coat
@MegaJewbasher well it really depends on how long youre out there for or how aggresive you are, but generally three times and you would start feeling like you want to put another thin coat on top of your old wax.
I have a 21" wide board and it takes me what feels like forever haha! ...and that's using base coat + top coat. I like to wax in my house where it's cooler as opposed to outdoors in the sun/heat due to the fact that the wax gets mushy. ~Your friendly neighborhood South Texan Yewwwww~
Cheers for the video, great! Random question, where did you get the turtle decal from? My partner would love it for her board. Thanks and keep up the good work, Den
Well #1 you picked the easiest thing about surfing to do a "How to" video on and #2 you also have what is likely the world's flattest hpsb 👏 and yes I watched this video many months ago and it absolutely improved my waxing technique! Thanks now I'm ready to shred! 💪😲🌊
+Colleen williams Correct. The wax creates friction between your feet and the board when you ride. However (and maybe more importantly), it creates friction between your BODY and the board when you're paddling out.
Devonian I used to have an old retro stick with a grip pad on it. I still ended up waxing it. All in all wax is tried and true, removable, stickier and probably lighter. 🤙🏼
i have a 6'2" board that was giving yo me by my uncle and its about 20 years old, and it has never been used, and its been sitting in my attic?! can i still ride this?
So maybe one of y'all can help me out with something....im new to skimboarding and i have the pads on my board but i was wondering if i should or need to wax it as well?or do i need to even worry about waxing on a wooden board
That's a really nice way to wax the board. I always just rub the wax on without any pattern and have trouble with it. I gotta try this way. I wax the hell out of my board right above the rails. Before I did, my hands would always slip off and make me look like a complete idiot.
You don't need to use so much wax. A better way is to crosshatch with the wax FLAT on the board, then do light circles (don't press hard) after that, again with the wax flat on the board. You get bumps really quick and with MUCH less wax.
omg i've been useing hardly any wax, no wonder i kept slipping off the board, and when i try and duck dive my hand slips and i like get tumbled by the wave ... oh wells least i know i wasnt putting enough on :3

I use basecoat during fall and winter so the cold wax sticks better. I’m in SoCal so water doesn’t get below 58
Big help, thank you
I realize it's kinda randomly asking but do anyone know a good website to watch newly released tv shows online ?
@Anthony Deandre Thank you, signed up and it seems to work =) I really appreciate it!!
I have watched this video a few times over the years. It is always the best wax job for me. I use the base coat but do not mind the xtra work and small cost for slightly better grip. I need it.
I painted the turtle with posca paint markers then sprayed a layer of clear coat on it
Thank You Karate Kid
I'm the firts
beautiful board man
I don't know why but I've watched this video 8 times.. Idk if its the music or what but its just entertaining as hell to watch.
Does this technique work for soft top surfboards as well? say a mullet fat cat softboard? will this still work really well? cheers bro
You should have seen the crap wax job I did before I watched this video. So thanks ! I am now one step closer to looking like I know what I am doing !
I actually painted that turtle myself. And then had to acetone it off when I sold the board :(
Outer Beaches Realty that’s a shame that turtle was dope
Shame, love the turtle
Nooo turtle was amazing. I’d buy a board from you that you painted a turtle on
Hey cool video. The first you use was a base and the second is the wax??. or both are wax?.Thabks !
it looked soo sick!!
what are the dims on the board do you remember?
very good looking turtle. how did you prep the board before you started painting?
do you have to wax everytime you surf how long does the wax stay on for?
Love it, think im going to do the same with my skim board. Thanks bro!
Thanks for the tip awesome artwork on the board!!!
whats the song ? love it
After you have drawn the little 'diamonds', do you need to wait a while for it to dry before you go on or can you just immediately continue rubbing over it?
Cool board by the way!
Surf wax isn’t wet and it doesn’t dry
if im using basecoat and topcoat should i use the cross hatching with the basecoat then go over it with top coat
i just waxed a new board with a basecoat and topcoat. i did the basecoat like he describes here and then at the finishing touch part at 2:35, i switched to the top coat

was that for your base coat or top coat though
Gonna try this formation on my Rusty La BLUE 6'4
I have a 21" wide board and it takes me what feels like forever haha!

Did you have to prepare the board in any way before you started painting, or just bought the board new and started like that?
I don't surf at all nor do I know anything about it but this was cool to watch
How long is this board? Thank you
Is this for the basecoat?
Cheers for the video, great! Random question, where did you get the turtle decal from? My partner would love it for her board. Thanks and keep up the good work, Den
Just wondering why you didn't talk about basecoat
bro what kind of material did you use to paint that turtle? spray cans? decos? sharpies ?
Do you need a basecoat of wax or is that unnecessary?
Yeah i dunno :/
+Nathan Ramirez Depends on the kind of wax you're using, some need a basecoat, others don't
Well #1 you picked the easiest thing about surfing to do a "How to" video on

I'm kind of a really really beginner in surfing, why should you wax a board and how often should you do it...?
Real surfers don't hate man, real surfers relate. Peace bra.
im going to ask such a dumb question because i don't surf. ( but what love to ). Why don't surf boards come with grip already made into the board?
looks cool can wait to try it out
base coast wax works wonders
Dumb question but I live in ohio.(no surf in the ohio river just huge catfish) You wax a board to help you not slip of right? Any other reasons?
+Colleen williams yup..grip
+Colleen williams Correct. The wax creates friction between your feet and the board when you ride. However (and maybe more importantly), it creates friction between your BODY and the board when you're paddling out.
Why don't they just make the board with a grippable surface there?
Devonian I used to have an old retro stick with a grip pad on it. I still ended up waxing it. All in all wax is tried and true, removable, stickier and probably lighter. 🤙🏼
Basecoat means your actual temp wax will stick and stay on better.
Will this same method work for bodyboards too?
Did you paint the turtle on yourself? What paint did you use?
i have a 6'2" board that was giving yo me by my uncle and its about 20 years old, and it has never been used, and its been sitting in my attic?! can i still ride this?
What paint did u use for the turtle? I want 2 make a fishbone on my board :P
So maybe one of y'all can help me out with something....im new to skimboarding and i have the pads on my board but i was wondering if i should or need to wax it as well?or do i need to even worry about waxing on a wooden board
I love that song! Thanks for the video - from novice
@Shakas420 Basecoat? what is this 1960? all modern wax has no need for basecoat.
dude i love the art
how did you paint the turtle?
what did you use?
Thanks
How long should you wait before you put more on?
i watch this almost every day
where did you get the design? (the turtle drawing)
Can this technique be used on soft tops??
What about Foam boards? I don’t wanna lose foam if it’s hard
you guys are lucky you guys get good waves nice vid it helpd me alot
@loganINTJ song for no one by miike snow
That turtle looks so cool!
Sweet shirt Kurt!
Where it is in Outer Banks ? I am at Buxton.
Where did you get that board?
That's a really nice way to wax the board. I always just rub the wax on without any pattern and have trouble with it. I gotta try this way.
I wax the hell out of my board right above the rails. Before I did, my hands would always slip off and make me look like a complete idiot.

Menho formato de voce fala de surfe menho torpe do surfe😎
Good video! Helped a lot, thanks heaps.
what about a base coat?

why do you sold it? :/

WHAT TYPE OF BOARD IS THIS?
this is what i do and it really does work and looks sick
beautifull board
Hey - is it the same method to wax a softie?
most softtops dont have to be waxed up because the foam on its owe can be grippy enough but you just do same wax job you do on fiberglass board
Dont wash a soft top :p Its just something that I advise ;D
i just got a new used board wax is still on there should i leave it on or whats the best way to take it off ?
Like this th-cam.com/video/QZOrluun-PA/w-d-xo.html
3:18 why cant i have waves like that
thought for sure you'd pick 'Paddling Out' instead
i jus drew a design on my board and i dont want the wax to fuck it off
check under the like bar
yes
Thanks this helps allot
very true
i agree, circlular motions for me :D
May I ask what this background song is?
