    It's so weird... I started skim boarding on Maui almost 30 years ago. Have watched a ton of skim videos on TH-cam over the last several years.
    But not until this past week, have I ever seen so many how-to videos on skimming by so many different content creators. It's weird. Like TH-cam just doesnt know me anymore

    I’m a beginner and I just got a pretty cheap 20 bucks wooden skimboard. Do I need traction pads? Or can I just do it without them. Also can I use candle wax? I’m broke so don’t want to buy any new stuff hahah (also my skimboard is really thin. Like it’s barely a cm thick, does this matter?)

    • @Zaakro
      @Zaakro 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Old post, but yes you have to wax it, they do not come pre-waxed. The more expensive boards will come with a factory wax, but it's to keep the finish on the board from getting ruined. You have to clean that wax off before you wax it.

    • @BeachLookingGuy
      @BeachLookingGuy  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nomis 17 depends how often you skim. I skim 3-4x a week. Usually every session I add some wax at one point. Once it gets too thick or sandy I will scrape and put all new wax. Scrape and fresh coat is maybe once a month

      You’re comparing two completely different uses for wax. On a skimboard it provides traction so you don’t slip off. Just like a surfboard, they are slippery when wet. In skating wax is used to make rough surfaces smoother.

    To make the pads sitck use acetone or mineral spirits, maybe denatured alchohol. Acetone would work best but test a small area to make sure it doesn't screw up the top coat. Clean clean clean to make sure the glue sticks. A light sanding to create some tooth but not too much. I'm paranoid about sanding through the top coat.

    TO MAKE YOUR PAD STAY ON LONGER SAND YOUR BOARD WITH SAND PAPER BEFORE YOU STICK YOUR PAD ON

      Sanding is not always necessary. But I did go over sanding the board in my traction setup video

      @@BeachLookingGuy More importantly I think cleaning it would help. Try cleaning it with alcohol or acitone before putting the grippads/arch pads on

    How do you throw the board onto the sand after the wave washes down. Mine just stops.

    • @gatorville
      @gatorville 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      speed wax on the bottom of the board and make sure that the sand isnt too dry

      If you live near ocean then let wave wash up on shore all you need is about 1 inch and that’s more than enough water then you run and let go of board and get on also called on step on board

      My boards are worn out within 8 months. Pads won't last half that. How frequently you skim and your riding style can have different results. I skim 3-4x a week for about 3-5 hours a time. Since I shift my feet around a lot, the pads tend to peel off.
      No offense but until I skim it and see the results, I can't really believe that any brand of pad is holding up that well. 15 years of skim and every pad I ever had across many boards have never stayed 100% in tact😭

      Beach Looking Guy maybe it’s because the texture of your board and the pads don’t stick correctly

    Question can you use candle wax?

    • @BeachLookingGuy
      @BeachLookingGuy  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      John wanat I’ve never tried. It might work a little bit, but surf wax is formulated for different water temps so it doesn’t get too hard or soft.

      Mmm I wouldn't. Wax is cheap enough so I would hustvstay safe and get some sticky bumps or something made for skim/surf boards
