My daughter finished Greyfriars Bobby today and she cried three times during the reading. Thanks for taking me a tour in the place Bobby rest in peace. Thank you!
when i was younger we learnt this in school and my mum and dad took me to edinburgh for me to see the graveyard, cafe and statue. this story still touches my heart.
Back in 2005-2006, I Lived in Edinburgh. ( I'm from Connecticut, U.S.A.) I love these videos. I walked on most of those streets!! Fond memories... & I remember the Greyfriar Bobby pubs. I took an Actual picture of the doggie statue, (with a real deal camera!) Anyway, I love these Edinburgh vids. I walked those streets every day, in the rain! At least they weren't Freezing, icey rains, like Connecticut's Feb. weather!! 💙💙💙
My favourite thing in the world is how there are always things being left at the grave, including sticks and dog toys. And I know it’s damaging the statue and you shouldn’t do it but the thought of hundreds, probably thousands of people at some point feeling the need to pat Bobby’s nose because he was such a good boy makes my heart warm.
Remnds me of the shiny nose on Abe Lincoln's bronze bust at Lincoln's Tomb in Springfield, Illinois where I grew up. The rest of the statue was green from years of exposure to the elements. My brother's Boy Scout troop happened to be there one day when there was a sudden, violent storm with bolt after bolt of lightning. They were able to take shelter in the tomb. When they emerged after the storm, they saw that Lincoln's bust had been damaged by lightning & the tip of the nose was gone. Whenever retelling the story years later, my brother would be holding an old cigar box full of mementos from his younger days, & he would end the story with how he'd picked up a shiny stone before leaving....a "stone" that turned out to be the tip of Lincoln's nose. And that, as Paul Harvey would say, is the rest of the story.
Even if not entirely accurate, it is still a really well-intended, nice, fitting tribute to undoubtedly a fine and kind man and the most loyal adorable dog who knew kindness. Love from Scotland, X.
Something similar happened in Japan in the 1930’s with a Japanese dog named Hachiko. His owner was a university professor. He would wait for his owner at the train station every night to walk him home personally. But one day, the poor man died of a cerebral hemorrhage in the middle of class. And Hachiko never saw his owner again. I think he stayed alive for 9 more years, waiting in that train station for his owner to come back. That poor dog never left hoping to see him again. At least Bobby knew his owner was dead. This poor creature had no closure.
Bobby and his story were the most memorable and emotional part of my visit to Edinburgh. It's great to see that there is now a full length feature film based on the little fella's story. Every dog owner that welcomes them into their home as part of the family will relate to this story. In a way, Bobby belongs to all of us. Thanks for another great video.
Thank you so much Sir for sharing we had a dog named Samantha she was so lovely and kind for 10 years and 3 months she made us happy really missed her and watching Bobby touched my heart
Love this video. Made me so emotional. Dogs are truly the best friends of all good Human Beings. Never ever betray or abuse dogs. They are 100% sacred animals / pets. They will be known as mythical creatures in the times to come. Show them 100% True Love. Love from a true Scot, 22nd Great Grand-Daughter of King Robert I The Bruce. Protect all dogs till Eternity. - Human guardians / human protectors / loyal beings. RIP my Sookie Boy. A true handsome and faithful, devoted, charming Sir. You will never ever be forgotten, my good Son. I will meet you in Heaven my sweet Boy, one day soon. Love Forever, from Scotland, X.
When I was looking for the information of very faithful Japanese Akita dog called "Hatch," I happen to know the story about Greyfriars Bobby. These two stories are very similar. One of my friends sent me the article of "Hatch" the other day, so I taught him this Scotland tale of Greyfriars Bobby instead. We are impressed by this kind of stories.
The original Hatch film came out in 87 which was a japanese film with subitles and it was called Hachiko Monogatari it a lot better than the remake with Richard Gere, the original film is hard to find now, but i never heard of Greyfriars Bobby until a friend told me great film
I love the story of Bobby and Edinburgh. Also loving all of your videos. I'm writing a novel that's based in Edinburgh and your videos are helping me a lot with inspiration and backstory for the city.
Tony that was very good regarding Greyfriars Bobby although you could have mentioned the Disney film from 1961. For the fountain, you would think they could get a grant to get it back into working order being that it is historical and a popular visitors attraction. A follow-up Clip to the Museum of Edinburgh, being Huntly House, High Street, when it reopens would be an idea, which has both the collar presented by the Lord Provost and food bowl, which are worth seeing.
Ma dug died and he was very loyal dug. Greyfriars came tae mind. Loved the walk through Edinburgh Mr. Broonford felt home sick. Shuggy Milligan calling in frae British Columbia Canada. Subscribed
Such a nice informative video, thank you! I have been passing by his statue every other day last year and I’ve seen tourists rubbing his nose for good luck and crowding up the place, but I didn’t know his story until I watched your video.
There's also a wonderful Walt Disney movie "Greyfriar's Bobby". I first saw it when I was a young girl and have never forgotten the incredible faithfulness of that little dog. Wonderful movie.
Hi Tony love your videos. I moved to North Berwick 2 years ago from Barrow in Furness England. Keep up the good work with your videos, they are very intersting
I really enjoy your videos. Subscribed and watching all your videos. I visited Edinburgh two years ago. Its such a beautiful place with such a history.
Thank you for that info on his nose. I saw so many people rubbing it and it felt wrong, but I wasn't sure how the city felt about it. Glad you clarified. Such an amazing story.
I was there today and people were touching thé nose even though it says not to Little Bobby such a loyal little dog I did not want to touch his wee nose lol what à day we had there today
THANK YOU for asking people not to rub his nose, and that goes for David Hume's toe as well. Please. When I see people doing this it just runs through me. It's not as if they can't figure it out and rubbing metal of any sort will not bring luck. That's so dumb. THANK YOU for your stories and your content. GREAT stuff.
This reminds me of a memorial in Chibuya,Japan a dog that waited for his master for about 12 years until his passing! 😪 How many other pets have gone through a similar life!? In Louisiana a man family went through a similar situation the only difference was that it was an Alligator 🐊! That was 150 years ago that Greyfriars Bobby died!!!
Bobby got the keys of Edinburgh which is the freedom of the city and the one o'clock gun he would go around to the pub for his lunch and he had his own bowel and His own spot near the fireplace
This story is absolutely beautiful man… Just found out about this story from a GTA5 Easter egg funny enough. In the cemetery there’s a little greyish white terrier sitting on the path, and if you walk near him, he gets up and starts walking. If you follow behind him he walks all the way to his owners grave and wags his tail and sits down and stares at the headstone. ❤️🩹🥲 What in the holy fucking shit was that in the background at 6:12? 😂
I would like to hear about some of the people buried in the cemetery you are walking in here. I visited it and it was very eerie. I didn't know any stories of the people buried though.
Just seen this, but I have to correct one thing about it, sorry to burst a few folks bubble, but the headstone is NOT a headstone, it's a memorial stone. Animals do not get buried in graveyards (it's against the law), read the inscription on the stone, it does not mention burial
So much is said to be in dispute over the story, with no real evidence or even vet records for the dog others claim to be the real "Bobby". Some of the stories make sense, in that they are good natured, loving and wonderful feel-good stories. Today, with TikTok and TH-cam we would have lots of proof of the truth in the tail-wagging but alas, it was the 19th century. We have stories. They are in fact GREAT stories. No doubt a dog did live and die and was buried, but as t who actually first owned the dog, well, it's a good read.
Tony have you heard the story of Bum the Dog? His statue is at the end of Princes St Gardens. I did a video about him on my channel. Robert John Rogers
Here is the shortened story of Greyfriars's Bobby. If you haven't heard it yet. A little Scotch Terrier belonged to an old man in Scotland. When the man became ill, Bobby faithfully stayed by his side. Soon the poor man died and was buried in a graveyard near the city. Bobby was his only friend. Only Bobby mourned his death. The gravedigger found Bobby lying on his master's grave in the morning after he was buried. The gravedigger drove Bobby away. The second morning the dog was there again. The gravedigger did not expect the to see the dog the third morning because it was cold and wet, but he was there. No matter how stormy or cold the weather was, the faithful little dog was by his master's grave he made his master's grave his home. Once a day. he would go away to secure food. Bobby stayed close to his master's grave for twelve and a half years. Bobby died of old age. He was buried in a flower garden near his master's grave. A costly marble fountain was placed above his grave so that all might remember his faithfulness. A beautiful bronze statue of Greyfriars's Bobby was placed on top of the fountain.
Have you ever heard of the story in from Japan about a dog that used to walk to the train station with its owner, sit around and wait for him to return on the train? I believe it was an Akita dog. Apparently the owner died but the dog still waited for him at the train station. People would feed the dog and take care of the dog is it stayed underneath some bushes waiting for its Master to return. As you can guess, the dog passed away. You can Google the story I'm sure.
How did Bobby know that his master was in the grave? Did he see him being put into the coffin and being lowered into the ground? Was he at the funeral? Somehow I doubt this. I'm not so sure about this story... it's lovely and all but it sounds pretty implausible. It's more likely that this was actually a different dog known as a "graveyard dog" at the time; strays who took up residence at graveyards because people would feed and praise them because they _thought_ that they were there watching over their masters' graves when they weren't. It's just how they survived.
Yes, unfortunately so, just last month. And only a couple of days before a memorial ceremony marking the 146th anniversary of Bobbys death. As you can see from the video, it has been repaired now. But they could not repair it in time for the ceremony.
Wait what so the beginning of the film was wrong. John grey worked as a handy man away from Edinburgh when he got sacked he came to Edinburgh and wee bobby followed him all the way to Edinburgh

'Greyfriars Bobby The Most Faithful Dog In The World' by Jan Bondeson is well worth reading.
Thanks, will 100% look it up.
Read this many years ago and it still stands as one of the most loving but sad books I've ever read.
My daughter finished Greyfriars Bobby today and she cried three times during the reading. Thanks for taking me a tour in the place Bobby rest in peace. Thank you!
It’s a heartbreaking, yet heart warming story. Truly the goodest boy ever.❤️❤️❤️❤️

I don't think Bobby was doing that to protect the grave, he could have been thinking or hoping he would come back. Thank you so much for the video!
Great source of information about Greyfriars Bobby and love the closing with the buses towards the end of the video

My uncles dug.. honest
I guess it's compared to Hachiko and Shep.
Did someone really knock over John Grays gravestone a short time ago?
Yes, unfortunately so, just last month. And only a couple of days before a memorial ceremony marking the 146th anniversary of Bobbys death. As you can see from the video, it has been repaired now. But they could not repair it in time for the ceremony.
that's such a shame. Thanks again for the upload. I really enjoy your blog.

Wait what so the beginning of the film was wrong. John grey worked as a handy man away from Edinburgh when he got sacked he came to Edinburgh and wee bobby followed him all the way to Edinburgh
If the dog was loved so much by the people of Edinburgh, why didn't THEY chip in to buy the dog's license?
The nose wasn't shiny when I visited in about 2011/2012 so it's done that in the last 6 years, unfortunate
Yeah, unfortunately it ain’t getting any better.

You gotta rub the nose. Them's the rules.
Find it very annoying you all rubbing his nose as it has to get painted again and again
Totally agree. Stop rubbing the nose!
Its bronze. They wont paint it. It's the patination rubbing away not paint. So they are literally rubbing away the metal which is much worse.
I'm on my 2nd Skye, my 1st was a rescue her name was Wendy. She was a drop eared and only 10% of Skye's are drop eared. Last year in November we adopted Sophie and she's a platinum prick eared Skye, they are such wonderful pups.
