My Father was born in Knox House in 1922, and I remember visiting my Grandparents there in the 1950s. The spiral staircase, and the 'speaking tube' are indelibly imprinted in my memory of the place. Thanks for the tour.
Thanks for the tour! I am a lineal descendant of John Knox living in North Carolina, USA. 14TH Great Grandson through Lady Margaret Stewart, then Witherspoons to Williamsburg County, S.C.
All those lovely old books make my hands itch for a pair of white cotton gloves and the opportunity to study them! That’s the hardest part of visiting places like that - so many books that I can’t handle. I’m such a nerd...
Tony, just thought I’d give you another piece of information. This house was part of the lands that belonged to Dunfermline Abbey. Every time I pass it, I touch it and let it know it’s still loved by a Dunfermliner❣️💕🤣
I've been visiting Edinburgh since I was 4 years old. I've never visited here. I must do so! It was Patrick Geddes in the garden. Another good subject for a video. If it wasn't for him many old buildings would have been demolished & Edinburgh a much sorrier place. Thanks Tony.
Thank you very much for showing the inside of John Knox's house, dear knows why i never visited it when i was a young lad in Edinburgh. As i was in the choir of Canongate Kirk just down the road a wee bit around the early 50's . Duncan Pitkeathly ,Queensland Australia .
I stumbled upon this channel last night and have been binge watching ever since. I absolutely adore Edinburgh and these videos are amazing, thank you for your fantastic content.
Great video I love your Joy of new things. I look forward to these every week. Beautiful garden I’m pretty sure the city I was born was named after John Knox. Knoxville, Tennessee.
As you have mentioned the Geneva Bible, I have to tell you that way back in 1988 myself and 3 friends drove through France from the southern border with Spain, all the way up the Mediterranean coast, into Turin in Italy and then on to Geneva for two days. When we were there we took many photo at the Reformation Wall which has huge statues of famous Calvinists (the movement from which Protestantism grew. Among the statues were; Calvin who was Swiss and the acclaimed founder of the Movement, Frenchmen Theodore Beza and William Farel but the one that excited us Edinburghers most was the statue of John Knox.
We were there!!!! Just finished Sunday mass at St. Patrick’s Church. We were at the top of South Grey’s Close - Trying to decide where to get breakfast. You were across the street...if we only knew!
Did so enjoy this one, stirred memories. Also led me to find out the history of the the house next door and the name of an antique dealer who had a shop underneath. ( Esta. Henry )
Great Job Tony , really enjoyed you as a host , but must admit I was disappointed in the house itself. A tip of the hat to you and the ringing of the bell ... that was exhilarating ! I shall be checking out more of your videos
Love this! Moving to Edinburgh from Australia, all due to your videos! Can you make a video on Edinburgh’s hidden gems (secret local pubs, spots, cafes...ect).
The Broonfords I’m a UK citizen from my folks (Scottish heritage) never been that side of the planet and honestly seeing the videos made me fall in love with Edinburgh! So I decided for a different change of scenery :) thanks for the comment man!
Great tour of John Knox’s house. I noticed the Worlds End pub when you rang the bell so I know exactly where it is now and It’s on the list for the next visit for sure.
Pure dead brilliant! Gooshbumps when you got to ring the bell. Love history. Wish I had known about the garden, should have. Love the story telling centre. Great coffee btw. I'll be back. Cheers.
Oh this was great, thank you muchly! Now I'm homesick again. It's 22 years since I was last in John Knox's House and it was a pleasure to see it again and to see your delight in ringing the Netherbow Bell. ☺
I must hasten back to Edinburgh! Was there last summer for 2 weeks... simply not long enough. Thanks for showing this... it's on my next visit to-do list. 🇨🇦❤🏴
The fireplace is braw! I always thought so. Everthing about the place: the carved walls, coloured roof, stained windaes, all! I love that stuff! I worked in Culross and there was much of this!
Love this video, love the history of the John Knox house. The garden is beautiful, the statue staring back, reminds me of Colonel Sanders, dopple ganger
What an honor it must have been to ring the bell... So very cool Tony! Wish I would have known about this place when I was there in May.... would have stopped by now that I know how much John Knox influenced history. Thank for this one Tony!
I appreciate all your tours and conversation. If I could go I’d love to visit and while not available to me you have made it so in a relatable way and personal. Many many thanks.
Amazimg tour! Oh the bell, i love that sound ❤ I didnt know about the garden. You always make me laugh, eheh u put your ass on his chair got dressed with his clothes😂 I love what u did ! Thanks
This great, just wish I had seen your channel before visiting Edinburgh. I went from 11th - 14th June 2019, what an amazing City full of Character and history, I loved every moment. I stayed in the Old Tolbooth Wynd, but I can't believe I missed these little hidden gems, so thank you for showing them. I am now a new subscriber and just watching all your content. keep up the fantastic work. John Watts in Liverpool.
Thanks again for another interesting video. I have a question. How did they get furniture upstairs? Those windy staircases aren't an option. Do you know?
I was in the Storytelling Center for Fringe and saw two puppet shows that were out of this world. It was so busy in there, I missed the fact of it being John Knox’s house😂
Wicked fun to ring the bell! 🔔 Curious why the close was closed off before? I don’t recall from that video. I’m glad you were able to get to the garden this time. 👍🏼
I had to giggle because the cloak and bonnet must have bee worn by countless people and not washed. Then, just after the video was made, COVID hit. LOL. Great video. I think it's funny that John Knox rented the house. The landlord could have kicked him out I suppose, but maybe he was afraid to. LOL (and to ring the bell! HOW cool is that?)
Hi Tony Where I stay in Gladstone Terrace in Old Town, the steps in the building leading up to the third floor each have uneven sized steps which caught me out on a couple of occasions... I'm thinking maybe it was quite a common thing in Edinburgh?
Go Broonford Clan! I’ll check out the John Knox house this next visit. Any plans to delve into the surrounding towns and the history of the shale and coal mining? My family is from Uphall, Broxburn, Aramdale, Liberton, Cockpen-on the outskirts of Edinburgh. There’s some incredible history in the coal and shale mining towns. The wealthy owners contributed to the financial successes of Edinburgh and many laborers and their descendants left to go to America. Mine in the 1880’s.
Trying to find one of the older videos about a great place to take pictures of the sunrise. It was on a side street near the castle. So popular that there was a platform. Does anyone remember which episode it was?
@@ClanBroonford I am sorry I was so sure it was your video. It was someone outside The castle who took a street to the right and went down some steps and make another right. They were showing a great place to get sunrise and sunset pictures.
First of all, a brilliant video. I didn't know much about John Knox. I did some digging. About the writing on the wall: in the Bible, the Pharisees tried to trap Jesus by asking him whether it was lawful to give tribute to Caesar. He said render unto Caesar what is Caesar's and render unto God what is God's. Then a lawyer tried to trip Jesus by asking him which was the greatest commandment. He said love God above all and also love your neighbor as yourself. St. Matthew 22:37-39. It is sometimes called the Great Commandment. The motto on the wall looks like that. I hope that as a foreigner answering this question I do not get you in trouble with the new laws in Scotland. I am just answering the question. I had to look up the man in the statue. It is Sir Patrick Geddes, Scottish polymath, thinker and visionary. I never would have learned this without all your wonderful videos. Thank you!
I wonder if a video has been done on the Magdalene Chapel, 41 Cowgate, Edinburgh…in 1560 the very first General Assembly of the Church of Scotland took place there and John Knox was present…amazing history….known probably by very few people in 2024….over 550 years old….
In Tampa, Florida, there is a retirement community named John Knox Village. I never knew who John Knox was. I'm now assuming it is this gentleman that you are talking about. Of course, it could be the name of the builder. I don't know. In America, we call it the separation of church and state. -Clara from Florida
Looking forward to visiting very soon. But a part of me thinks that John Knox would be aghast at his abode turned into a selling emporium . To quote the great man; "None have I corrupted, none have I defrauded; merchandise have I not made." He died a poor man.
Well, this was a curious place. I was expecting what it would have looked like in John Knox's day. Little biblical dioramas with dancing lions? Torture instruments?
Brilliant video Tony! But i have to say my favourite thing is you turning into a big kid.🤣 has it got that lovely smell of old wood and polish in there?
How filthy does the Mile look today. Only city with historical streets I have been to with rubbish bins out on the street. It's a filthy pit these days. Originally being from Ormiston up from Musselburgh I used to love walking around Edinburgh. It's an absolute embarrassment these days
My Father was born in Knox House in 1922, and I remember visiting my Grandparents there in the 1950s. The spiral staircase, and the 'speaking tube' are indelibly imprinted in my memory of the place. Thanks for the tour.
John Knox excomunicated my 16th Great Grandfather Sir James Balfour. I wear it as a badge of honour!
Now we know how to trip a burglar. Thanks for the tour of John’s old house. Fascinating!
It’s a cool place to visit.
Thanks for the tour! I am a lineal descendant of John Knox living in North Carolina, USA. 14TH Great Grandson through Lady Margaret Stewart, then Witherspoons to Williamsburg County, S.C.

Love the garden. Perfect getaway for a lunch picnic. You really know Edinburgh and you are a funny guide. Thanks again!
Thank you very much. I make myself laugh at least.
Incredible and beautiful I will certainly visit John Knox building for sure
Great tour, it looks very deceiving from the outside, it’s huge!! Yet once again, I belong to Edinburgh....and never been!!! Thanks Tony

I don't think people understand the impact John Knox had in the western world. And I'm not even a presby ;P
Should be a Presby ;)
What did the motto mean on the building front at the start of the video?and who did the bust in the garden represent?
No idea, unfortunately.

Think it’s all spiral stairs round about that time.

Those big coins are about as big as the 50p coins?
My daughter corrected me. Looked at wrong month on calendar. We were no where close. Bummer. We were down at Britannia Yacht.
Yeah, you would not have heard my from there. Lol

Some of the stuff is just about the period. But the house itself is cool.
