And please post and pin a comment to the top of the comment list and in the description so people are aware that a FW is on the way. @@rockmusicvideoreviewer896 Right. I've seen it for myself. Sony support didn't take this serious even with detailed prove that even an a7R III is performing way better. These "User error" statements are really weak. They are telling that to photographers that have actually experience for decades already and they are not even reading the previous informations that have been already sent, but asking for them allover again. The pressure must be raised by everyone and even better by people that reach way more people and could confirm the issue.

Both cameras are great. I got R6 over A7IV, because I already had RF glass and I really love the R6. Still, I really hope Sigma and Tamron to drop some lenses for RF mount. I don't understand why Canon are not cooperating on that. I love the RF glass, but these prices are not for mid-range photographers and a lot of photographers go for Sony, because of this glass. I'm part of a photography school and 80% of the photographers choose Sony and most of them did it because of the glass. Canon is probably killing it at the high-end photography level, but if they do not allow third-party lenses soon, they won't be able to catch Sony.

@@alr1577 Because, many Sony shooters will stick with Sony as a lifelong customer. As they become high end photographers they will spend that money with the Sony ecosystem. Canon may be fine for now but in 10-20 years the fact that 80% of people went Sony for the more affordable entry point will matter.

This is a very well-balanced video. Most channels take the whole "Canon vs Sony" approach as click-bait. You really won't be disappointed by any modern mirrorless system from either brand. Personally I'm sticking with Canon, not because I have anything against Sony (I used to have both), mainly because I have large hands and find Canon cameras more comfortable to use for extended periods. As far as lenses go, I was speaking to people who work for Australia's largest camera retailer - Canon have an embargo on 3rd-party development for 5 years. RF mount came out in 2018, so don't expect to see a huge amount of native RF glass until the end of 2023. Remember though, adapters are cheap and so are used EF lenses 😉

Quality content Mitch! Coming from a Canon T4i, to a Sony A6000, and now a A7IV this past Tuesday, i'm in shock how awesome this camera is. As a portrait photographer, I used to shoot in burst mode to essentially not miss any shots, yet in reality I was hurting myself in post with the culling and wasted space. Switching to single shot has saved me so much time in the end, I highly recommend giving it a try. Single shot makes you be more intentional with your shots and it helps to make sure you get it right in camera vs hoping you got a good frame. I Used to leave an hour session with 300+ images, now I'm between 30-50 depending on how many looks my clients and I have agreed upon. Keep up the awesome content man, I look forward to seeing your future work!

I have the R6- its an amazing workhorse- never fails- the only negative is I wish the 4k60 didnt overheat. To fix this shortcoming and add a bit of fun to my bag I picked up a cheap used Fuji XT3 and a couple inexpesive viltrox lenses and just let that live on a gimbal or sticks for 4k60 longer videos or for fun compact out and about days. The Sony A74 I cant even consider with that cropped 4k60 at a premium price.

The thing is... the EF adapter works really really well. It is just a psychological thing of many people that they want a lens without that adapter in between... You can get a 70-200 f/2.8 L IS II USM lens for basically 1100-1200 € in mint condition, and that is a bargain. That glass performs very well even on high MP cameras like the 5DSr with 50 MP on full frame.

But the RF 35 is just as sharp as some of the top of the range 35s out there even wide open - also with 20mpix you’re pushing on the resolving power of the sensor at this point as sharper glass give diminishing returns until you pair it with a higher resolution sensor - we’re talking 50mpx and up.

one obvious difference between Sony and Canon is the contrast, specially after editing the photos it is more pronounce. You can see at 4:27 that the sony looks more faded and less contrasty. The colors look more saturated on canon, you can see that by looking at the greens. Another difference is the highlight after its being edited. Sony looks more washed out while the canon maintain a decent look to the highlight, you can see that on the skin.
Finally, look at the model skin when the photos are edited, it feels more natural and intact. The sony have a weird looking skin, not as smooth.
This is just my observation from these photos.

Have a A/IV myself, tried with 35mm f/1.4, 55mm f/1.8, 85mm f/1.8, 90mm f2.8 and there are definitely focus-issues. The camera is not permanently front- or back focusing, but even with Eye-AF and AF-C, the selection-algorithm fails. As soon as there are strong (often vertical) contrast areas, or lines the AF prefers to focus on those parts in the frame even with the green focus frame clearly being on the eye. So, the camera is dead sharp, but it "internally" selects wrong parts for adjusting rather than the one in the focus frame. Took some selfies on a tripod, focus clearly on the eye, but often "real internal" focus was on the the black and white hairs of my beard, sometimes back focusing, sometimes front focusing. Hairs distract the camera, but also gray lines on buildings, or vertical borders of doors or windows. It's clearly a flaw in the internal focus selection logic. Had lots of portraits with different very good lenses with slightly blurry eyes but only with this camera (others work fine with same lenses). Hope they come up with a firmware upgrade soon

I got an R6ii because I came from Canon and have a few EF lenses, and the R6 seemed to be the best option at the price point. I got the RF 24-70 and now I'm struggling with the size, it's not too big per se for regular photos and straight on videos, but it would be heavy if I were to point it at myself and vlog. And regardless of how I'm shooting, whether photo or video, it draws attention and I hate getting attention. I sorta wish I had Sony simply because of the size of the body and the smaller size lenses. Is it hard to switch systems? Should I get over it and stick with it for a while? The camera itself is great and the quality is good, and my use case doesn't really encounter too much overheating. I typically do 4K24 and only go 4K60 for short time periods or bust out my gopro for short b-roll....

Thanks for confirming the Eye-AF issue that many seems to have and that from my observations seems to be algorithm related.
Not even my a7R III which has the "way worse" AF system from 2017, nails the (in my case human) eyes perfectly to the pupil 99% of the time. But at close distances the a7 IV is mostly nailing the eye brows or if you are really really lucky, then it will be on the eye lashes only, with very soft eye detail on at least 50% of the static portrait shots, but more likely 75-90% that can be delete directly and only 1-2% will be as good as with the a7R III. I did a 1:1 comparison with the 135mm 1.8 GM and controlled fail-proof identical conditions and settings to address this issue to the Sony support. Even if I've drastically underexposed with the a7R III, it still nailed the eye perfectly. Till now I have been asked by the Sony support the same questions all over again, that are even within the EXIF or my Sony account where my equipment is registered as well. That's just wasting my time for now.
Also I've noticed another issue (which might be caused by the missed focus issue as well) with complete failures of the eye detection with upper body portraits (head + shoulders + a little bit of the body) from around 2m distance 85mm for absolutely no reason in perfect lighting conditions with nothing covering the face. Even my a7R III could find the eye and I really always thought the a7R III AF isn't class leading especially compared to my EOS R5 which I also have.
And this is just about human eyes. The eye detection of animals and birds is also very weak and even worse than with my a7R III (animals only). It takes forever to detect the subjects and IF they will detected, they must almost be about to leave the frame. The funny thing is, if the AF finally(!) is nailing the eye, it keeps sticky as long as the e.g. bird or even duck is being more far away. If I'm focusing to something else and get back to the exact same duck immediately, it couldn't find it anymore. Completely useless for bird photography or in other words - if I'll use it with the same settings it would be as good as my a7R III and then I can take the a7R III instead because the resolution and frame rate is way better, for a cheaper price.
And things I also really don't like and make the camera not being state of the art:
    - 4K 60p only cropped - bad for video portraitures with nice bokeh
    - Only 6 fps with lossless and uncompressed RAWs - My EOS 6D II could do that as well
    - I hate that most of the time the eye that is in the background will be marked. This is the first camera that makes me setting the eye side manually and even my a7R III is choosing the better/closer eye most of the time
    - It's irritating when selecting an eye side manually. Right is left on the screen, left is right
Conclusion for now (hopeful a firmware will fix this very very soon):
The a7 IV did show me, that it has till now the worst Eye-AF algorithm I've ever seen in a mirrorless camera, even with human eyes that an almost 5 year old camera is nailing just perfect and even the a7 III and a7C does, just to stop giving some "it's better because of the higher resolution"-trolls that have no clue how AF is actually working. food to blame affected users.
Except of these things (and some other things that would also be nice if Sony will change them) it is a good camera, but not outstanding or state of the art. Honestly, at this time (and I've never thought I would say that one day) I would recommend the R6 oder the a7 IV. Or better go with another Sony body.
There is also a Instagram group with samples including from pro photographers that did show it happens even with F6.3 at perfect studio conditions: instagram.com/sonya7iveyeafissue/
And here is a Facebook group for communication of affected users: facebook.com/groups/sonya7m4eyeafissues/
If you are affected don't wait for a fix and make pressure to Sony, else it could take forever. You can get support from other affected users above to stop Sony stating "Never heard about" or "User error".

      @tubularificationed 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Agree, the "it's because of the higher resolution"-trolls are just trolling. Because it doesn't really matter much, if the blur amounts to 20 or 30 pixels depending on camera resolution 😱 If a picture is lost, then it is lost. It is lost, whenever the level of sharpness on the FINAL MEDIUM isn't right due to misfocusing.
The camera's megapixels only might play a role if investigating ultra-tiny blurs near sensor resolution limits (e.g. when someone would be testing out IBIS, tripods, shutter shock blur, or lens diffraction). But here, the eye AF misfocusing blur is orders of magnitudes bigger, so that megapixels simply don't make a difference any more.

    • @schildzilla

@@tubularificationed That idiots can say whatever they want. I don't havy any respect of them and don't stop claiming just because there are some fanboys around. I did get a confirmation from Sony Germany today that they are knowing the issue and working on it.
By the way, even the a7R IV was nailing the eye at other users. Also this issue appeared at a pro photographer that was trying to shoot for an eye lashes extensions prospect - and guess what: it appeared at aperture F6.3!
Even my a7R III is nailing the eye + eye lashes sharp at the same time. Why the a7 IV can't when it is so much better with the advertised AF and even the a7R III that "has too much megapixels" can?

Honestly, I went with the Sony A7IV over the Canon R6 for one major reason... 3rd party lens selection. I liked a lot of the lens offered from Sigma (especially their primes) and Tamron's 35-150mm F2-2.8. Whereas with Canon you have less selection for lenses and they're more expensive than Sony's G Master lineup. Plus I liked that Sony seems to be pushing the technology as the innovators in the mirrorless realm.

Excellent video again Mitch and your thoughts almost identically reflect mine regarding both cameras. I'll also add that the R6 has a faster sensor readout which means it should have less distortion when using the electronic shutter. In terms of the A7IV AF I've read up quite a bit on it and I don't think it's a lens problem. It seems to be some kind of algorithm issue with the camera, as the problem didn't exist on the A7III (allegedly). Hopefully Sony fix it in a FW update. Both are great cameras.

Thanks for your thoughts. I cannot compare the R6 with my A7iv. But I can compare the A7iv with my Z7ii. And to be honest, there is no real difference in shooting experience between both. But I am using the Sony more for the Tele seccion and the Nikon for the wide angle compositions. Reason: the good Tele lenses from Nikon are ridiculously expensive. And, on the other hand, I love my 70-350mm Sony, it gives me the results/quality I expect. And this for 600 Euro; a similar lense from Nikon costs 3000 Euro, 5 times more. Ok, may be the quality is a bit higher, but at the end of the day, I can come on the same quality plateau using Topaz on critical fotos. Hope my thoughts may help.
PS: I added a 70-180 from Tamron. This e.g. is not available for Nikon...

Sony A7IV is not the way to go for me since it shoots 4k video with a massive crop to get around the poor hardware design with the weak IBIS and lenses that focus breath. Sony’s stabilization with IBIS in video mode is not amazing. The A7IV has Active Stabilization to help with this, which is great, or you could use Catalyst, which is great. But you need a faster shutter which is not great, and even worst, it introduces a significant crop that is definitely not great. The 4k rolling shutter is pretty bad when sampling from the 7k full sensor, and this is a downgrade from the A7III, lol.

Canon have depth of field button that you need to press in order to get the real F stop depth of field, Sony doesn't require it because the you get the F stop of the settings. If you are gonna be shoot 90% of the time wide open then Canon way is good otherwise if you do a lot of street photography Sony approach is better. So you don't have to kinda guess the final results or the exact exposure because the Camera is showing f1.4 preview while the photo setting is 3.5

My reasoning for shooting Canon R5/R6 backup is all based on the Canon RF glass (that and I have a friend with a Sony A7R3 who has to clean his sensor literally everytime he shoots due to sensor dust - I would probably give up photography before I would do that to my lens. I don’t know if the Sony A74 has the curtain that closes over the sensor like the Canon R5/R6 do).
I have the Holy Trinity of RF F2.8L lenses. For me, and I tried all the lenses available, Canon RF glass is just so much better than anything else. Also, the prime RF F1.2L 50mm & 85mm glass are just bokeh beasts. I do not have the Canon RF 28-70mm F2.0L. I didn’t buy it due to the large filter thread for the front element; I don’t like that when shooting video, I cannot use both my PM Polar Pro 82mm VNDs. That’s my one mistake. I realize that for photography, I would much rather have the RF 28-70mm F2.0L lens.
I have a friend that has an R5 and a 28-70 F2.0L lens, and he does “all” his photography with that one lens. I wish I had that option. Right now, I feel like the RF 50mm F1.2L is a great street photography lens but geez I wish I had that 28-70 F2.0L; that would feel sublime versus using my feet and I just don’t like switching lenses every minute.
So the next two lenses on my list are the RF 28-70 F2.0L and the RF 100-500mm F4.5-xL. Those two lenses should make me just feel like I can select any of my lenses and have the right tool for the job.
I otherwise think that Canon, Nikon, and Sony full-frame cameras all now have amazing autofocus and great sensors. If you need to save money on glass, I can see the great argument for buying Sony (with that one caveat of the sensor needing cleaned with damn near every use) to get super inexpensive third-party lenses. But in my opinion, from talking with people who shoot Sony, they feel the cheap glass is good enough and not as good as using my RF L lenses. When I let my friends use my glass, they’re blown away by it. My next experiment is to use my friend’s Z9 I just bought him as a gift. I hope his mind is blown as much as I hope mine is too, especially with firmware 2.0.
Anyways love the videos. Your photos always look great even with a Canon nifty fifty. Proving that a good photographer with a good model, can make every portrait look stunning. Cheers mate.

Great video. Where you really see a major difference is in artificial lighting like strobe or LED. It is impossible to correct the orange skin tones on the Sonys, even the new A7IV. When you are shooting photos for ads and you're in the studio with a client, Canon or Nikon deliver pleasing images straight out of camera, and make you look good in front of your client when reviewing images. I've had to make excuses to my clients as to why the skin looked orange and blotchy. I thought the A7IV would fix this, but it's the same old story. Crappy skin tones. Yes, Sony cameras have great tracking eye autofocus, but after several years of suffering with the colors I went back to Nikon and couldn't be happier. I love the Z6 II and Z7 II and now preordered a Z9.

From what I have seen if one has a camera that has “eye tracking” then if you place their eyes in the top 1/3 that should put their nose about center frame to frame the subject nicely. Occasionally one may bring the eyes down in the frame to show some of the background to add more color.. or give more bokeh area.. but usually you don’t want to have too much and waste space up top. Do you think that's not the case when comparing sharpness and detail between the 20MP R6 and the extra 13 million pixels in the A7IV? I actually bought that and the 90mm macro Sony lens for the same as the one canon lens. It’s definitely a huge learning curve. I haven’t had much of an issue with the 4k60 crop factor as I usually have enough space when shooting at 24mm. I do like the mp cropping ability going up from 20mp. Some things I really like about the Sony is the clear image zoom, red border recording indicator, using the monitor+ app with my phone, having custom modes for photo and video even though it drives me nuts I can’t set a custom white balance when shooting in a memory mode (not sure if the r6 had this issue). Hi, I’m a newbie when it comes to mirrorless and without any lenses myself.
Which do you recommend for me? I would most likely use this camera as a hybrid with mixture of videos and photos when travelling, while using it as a webcam for when streaming at home.
Money is not an issue as I would not mind spending it one time using it long term (at least 4-5 years)

Which camera system do you have? I think a 24-70 2.8 will probably meet your needs best.

EF L glass adapted may be old but many like the 16-35 III or 70-200 III are still better than there third party counterparts on the Sony side.

Didn't the R6 get a new firmware upgrade for the heating issue - yet? Thought they all did . . .
I run with the EOS RP and the 6D mkII. Also run with the Sony A7III with Canon EF adapter, and an EF adapter for the RP too. Best of both brands w/o needing to buy RF or GMaster lenses. Was a move that is both cost effective and practical. I'm not seeing any reason to switch, as all my lenses currently used are still just as sharp in practice that I've seen. Mostly all L glass, except for some really sharp Samyang manual primes (14, 24, and 35mm). The 35mm, 24-70Lmm, and 70-200Lmm are my workhorses; works for me. Started photo work while storm chasing, where you do not get much of a second chance for a shot when the adrenaline is running up very high.
I really do like the Sony, though. Just like you said, there are more options to make use of in the menu, even though the menu itself isn't properly intuitive.
Like you videos and photos. All of your little lady models have been super cute in their breezy - yet modest - attire, wandering glances, and pretty smiles. A formula that works well for you.

Great video!! Do you think the AF-problems with the sony compared to the canon will be fixed with a firmware-update ? if I mention for instance my own nikon z6 for example, the current firmware is really great and well-doing compared to the original version ....

Yes! Sony mentioned it is aware of the front focusing issue as of yesterday and a firmware update will be released!

Hey Mitch :) . Do you have RAW Files of the Photos from the A7 IV? I am looking into buying this camera for travelling since I want good video and photo quality. With my Panasonic GH5s I get terrible photo quality haha. And I haven't found good photos from the Sony A7 IV in the internet yet.

For me its all been about the skin tones. I find my a7III isn't as forgiving with them as canon files.
So since the a7iv seems better in that department it's an easy win. Of course I'd love 4k 60fps FF but I use the 1080p 120fps more often

Try before the a7IV, because i tried it ans, finally, i kept my R6 (better skinstones)

I wonder what made you feel that way about the EVF's, Bhphoto says the Sony has a '3.68m-Dot EVF with 120 fps Refresh Rate' and the Canon has a '0.5" 3.69m-Dot OLED EVF' (which I googled is also 120 fps)
Perhaps the sony one just has more magnification, so the resolution seems lower?
btw have you enabled 120fps on your a7iv? It's off by default and makes a big difference in feel.
