I live in SoCal and I have a 2019 Honda accord I bought it with 7 miles brand new and I went to renew my registration 2 weeks and they told me I’m not the owner DMV investigator inspected my car confirmed it was mine and told me my VIN is on two other cars now they’re going after the cars with my VIN one was found already and second one was found yesterday DMV took possession of these two stolen accords. They had a fake title also I saw the dmv copy. I was told they is happening a lot. I’m so glad I was able to confirm I was the owner I had the title as well
Crazy. Thanks for sharing
That is insane thanks for sharing. The lengths some people will go to...
They basically somehow etched in your VIN on the other cars and also somehow produced these fake titles
I hope this forms happen to my truck lol
Woah that is a wild story!
I'm not worried. My car has the most effective anti-theft device known to Americans: Manual transmission.
Same here!
Overused and played out.
Delusional
Save the manuals💪
@@ADUSN Not as much as you'd think..... I asked my insurance broker about that and its a running theory in insurance agencies. Its not "proven" but many insurance agencies *DO* report that Manual cars are, in fact, stolen less.
I went to go buy a 6x6 but the carfax said it was only a 4x4...
In California most of the smash and grabs are done with stolen cars.
My friend got his 2022 AT4 stolen in Texas. 4 weeks later a detective called him from LA asking to confirm his truck had been stolen. My friend confirm of course. The detective said a man purchased it for $30k cash from a private seller and found out the VIN was swapped while at the DMV. The dude lost the truck and cash. 😬
How did they find out ? Maybe when they did a vin verification ?
@@oegesauto5619 While at the DMV trying to register it. The VIN came back as another truck that was totaled. The state trooper on-site at the DMV was notified by the employee. They questioned the man and he proved his story and the detective took the investigation from there. I'm sure the insurance took the truck back or auctioned it. My buddy was paid out 3 weeks after they didn't find it - he got an overpriced Jeep with a high-interest rate now.
Thanks for this excellent cautionary video. I had no idea that thieves had gotten that creative. Carry On Sir.
Just wanted to share knowledge of 1 legit case where the VIN number is weird and missing from the door jamb area: Gray market cars, which simply means the particular car was originally sold in another country and imported to the US later on. I have 2 of them, one from Germany and one from Japan. European VIN numbers look just like a 17-digit US VIN, but the check digit is different. Japanese cars usually have an 11 or 12-digit VIN. The first 5 or 6 will be the chassis code and the last 6 will be the production serial number. Most likely these cars will not have MPH anywhere on their speedometers (or any unit conversion button for digital ones), show temperatures in °C, have rear fog light(s) (looks like an extra brake light below the actual brake lights), have turn signal lights on the fenders behind the front wheels at about wheel-top height, "(!)" symbol parking brake light, the side mirrors on both sides are wide-angle like the passenger side mirror on US market cars, and they record the mileage in KM. I can tell you that in the event you encounter a gray market car for sale, make sure the seller has all the proper import documentation. STATE LEGAL and titled DOES NOT necessarily mean FEDERALLY LEGAL and vice a versa. General rule of thumb is if they're not at least 25 years old or older, walk away. If they weren't imported correctly, it's considered contraband, and much like a stolen car, the DHS will show up, confiscate it, and leave you with nothing.
I bought a stolen bronco raptor here in arizona last year. Was on the news I lost 75 grand cash
I live in TJ and work in San diego. Everyday when I cross back into. Mexico i see cars being taken away because they are probably stolen and trying to be resold in mexico
Taken away into Mexico or going back to USA?
@@Joeyjoejoejrshabadoo81Probably going back to US..😅
I'm feelin' safe spending the extra big $$ on the VIN window etching kit with nitrogen in my tires.😀
Good stuff!
I never get scammed. I send a deposit site unseen or cash the sellers check and send them the difference. Works 100% of the time.
dude my car was stolen in North Las Vegas this morning!!!! 7:30am while i was delivering my amazon packages, i got out the car and walked to customers door, and within 20 seconds they jumped in my car and drove away. The LVMPD recovered the car around 2:30pm. They only gave me 30 minutes to come pick it up or they had to tow it. So now i have to pay hundreds of dollars tomorow to retrieve my stolen car from the tow lot. How ridiculous and insane is that?!?!?! I hate North Las Vegas - that's why i try staying in Henderson as much as possible!
My wife told me it’s been going downhill over there fast. She grew up there and I lived down the street from her way before we met.
I’ve observed it has. I’d love to live close to Henderson or in Henderson too.
And your lesson from that ? = DON'T LEAVE THE FRIKKIN KEYS IN THE IGNITION !
@@InMyBrz Would also need to lock the door or they can steal the packages in the car. But then they can car jack him...
Lucky didn't go into this because it would make the video too long. All this auto theft is related to insurance fraud. The owner has huge car payments, he wants to get out of the payments so he arranged for the car to be stolen. The thieves swap out the vins then sell it to someone who doesn't know to check this stuff. The increasing auto theft rate is really insurance fraud. In the next two years this will get much worse as people try to get out of these huge car payments.
I believe Lucky didnt got lucky with new barber shop
I was working in the shop my hair was messy
Some cars have vin numbers and mileage encoded into the transmission TCU. If you have one of the better scan tools you can read them to compare to the vin plates and cluster mileage.
In this day and age, every piece of metal should be marked from factory & traceable.
A coworker told me that in the 70’s, he bought an old junker for $50 because he didn’t have any money. One night, it disappeared from his apartment parking lot in Texas so he reported it stolen. A month later, a police officer in Florida called him and told him that they found his car and he was going to have to pay the impound lot to get the car back. He told the cop to keep the car.
Now that car is getting 15k at auction.
LoL
Back in the day in college (late 80's) this one kid always got the best parking spots, like right up front for any bar/event. I finally asked him how he did this.
He tells me that he just parks it and ignores the tickets. After he gets 20 or 30 tickets the cops would tow the car, but since he only paid $100 for it, he would just go buy another $100 car. Every once in a while he would have to walk home from the bar/event as the tow would get towed. worth it.
Genius level stuff.

Thank you for that information. I would love to see a video showing everything to check when buying a car to avoid getting scammed. Also maintenance wise as well would be awesome to no buy a lemon.
It is abhorrent that the government isn't interested in how property crimes affect people in everyday life. Remember there are a certain group of politicians who believe that property crimes are not worth any effort and offenders dont need to be held accountable. It is very frustrating.
Police is there to protect government's business and property, not yours

Vins on the windshields make it easy for thieves to steal your car. Cover them!
You can get new keys cut from the vin number on certain vehicles.
Especially at street takeovers. Insane.
I rebuilt my 99' clean title Tacoma from about 15 different trucks and a 4 runner. Lol. Sure check my VIN's your going to be so confused it ain't funny. The cab engine and rear axle are the ONLY VIN's that match! And it's not stolen, just rehabbed with the best salvage yard and private party sold pieces I could find! It's also titled a "Prerunner" but it's 4x4 now!
Once again very informative and helpful!
I haven't bought a used car since my first car back in 2009. And I bought that from the DEALER.
Theft and fraud is so prevalent now that I'm not messing with used car lots.
I prefer leasing. The dealer can worry about depreciation and repairs for these high-tech nightmares.
I just leased a new 2024 Cadillac Lyriq AWD fully loaded Luxury 3 and I'm LOVING IT.
You say to walk into the DMV, and that the Texas DMV is not too helpful. When I walk into the Texas DMV, what specifically do I ask the DMV to do? thanks
it sucks. but if you dont want to lose money on a car its worth the headache
What specifically do you ask them to check?
What specifically should you ask the DMV to check?
If you get an engine replacement, how do you track the miles since it will be different from tour original?
Dawg Gawn. . 10-4 ... the repo man don't even stand a chance.. that's crazy man. 👍
Another due diligence is to ask for maintenance records. If they have none = red flag.
Ask for photo ID of the seller and take a picture of it. Run a credit check on them. It's worth the $30.
Could you do a video on when bringing a non-runner back to life makes sense?

Yikes, a ton of variables with that topic.
These problems are vastly understated. People are completely clueless to them. In some ways officials don't want everyone to know the ways how find out. Yet when it happens they only end up hurting victims and thieves keep on repeating. What is Rob Ferretti Caprice Donk doing in your shop. .
My 03 Buick park Ave is safe in all cities. Quarter million miles and climbin
I bought a 2022 Tacoma base model that uses an old fashioned key, no key fob, my son bought a 2023 Tacoma 4X4 with Manual trans and it uses a conventional key too! So the thieves can't get your key fob code to steal your truck! When I had my 2017 Mustang GT I used to wrap the key fob in aluminum foil when not in use to reduce chances of theft, what a pain!
Much easier to steal a vehicle with an ACTUAL key. It's harder to steal the fob cars. Don't ask me how I know. I love stealing cars. It's an addiction.
Would explain crazy drivers on the road too
Back in the day, before electric odometers, turning back the miles was standard practice at most, if not all, new car dealerships on high mileage trade-ins.
fedex is being investigated for this practice right now or at least i don't think it has been settled yet. became public info last summer. they were swapping out odometers for new or lower mileage ones when the trucks were getting to end us for them and run them back up to over 100,000 then sell them but sometimes they actually had over 400,000 on them. they are saying this might be the biggest case of odometer fraud seeing it wasn't just a couple because of broken speedometers that just got replaced like they said that got overlooked but almost all their vans had odometer changes thru a certain time period that the authorities came up with doing the investigation. last i knew/heard fedex was blaming the company selling their used vans and that company was blaming fedex but then i lost track of the story how it played out or if it is still on going
This is crazy, some tool companies doing immo function’s are now going to require VSP to use them. Which most people aren’t using them to steal cars. They are using these technologies to steal vehicles

What if you're buy used through Autotrader and owner still has a title lien? I'm looking to fiance through auto trader or my local bank. Will they handle all the title issues? Would it be harder for current owner to scam since they don't actually have the title? Thanks.
Is this happening to Honda civics and Toyota corollas, especially 7-8 year old used one?
Idiots tried to steal my Demon a couple years ago. Two friends of mine got their SRT's stolen.
We’ll get your demon too 🐱
Another situation I’ve come accross more than once .. seller loses original title , applies and gets a duplicate. Seller then finds original title and gives it to buyer. You goto dmv and they take the title ! Saying it’s not the newest one and that you need to contact seller for the newest title. This has plagued me twice over the years. Im going to start using your tip of seeing title number from car fax and comparing !
What sort of risk is associated with buying a new vehicle from a dealership with regards to what you were mentioning? Should I just assume it's fraud and have a full vin inspection on all obvious places with a computer check. Or can I assume a local new car dealership is going to be legit?
Put stationary tracker with sim card and airtag! Nobody will steal it

I want to go buy a Dodge, but the DMV told me it was a Stellantis, which is a foreign entity. I only buy American!
contact the local NICB staff for assistance and use their web page
There are dedicated youtube channels in Russia that check cars for damages, milage rollback, vin numbers and accidents.
I still didn’t understand how to identify a stolen vs legit car after watching the video. Need a summary of what to look for
Make sure the info in Carfax seems plausible. Find out where that particular car has VINs stamped and compare them. If possible find someone with a high end scanner and read the vin from whichever computer modules have it.

The auto industry is notorious for ripping people off lol
That’s why I buy expensive e-bikes lol
They need undercover agents to shut them down
how does a dealer buy a stolen vehicle. it should be standard procedure for dealerships to check for all this. I did all this since my first used car I bought privately. if a dealership sells a stolen vehicle there license should be instantly revoked
This is why Car Registration and titling needs to be federalized. Standardized across the entire 50 states one central database to verify VIN and Title, none of this every state does it different, that's crap and gives the A.H. thieves wiggle room to find flaws and fake the VIN and Title playing one state off the other.
