    Well you've convinced me to read Shirley in 2018! Your work here is done 😂 I've been meaning to read North and South for years, so it's great to hear that you enjoyed it so much xx

    • @lucythereader
      @lucythereader  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can retire now, haha! North and South and Shirley work really well together, so you should definitely try to read them both, although I know what with running a marathon and planning a wedding you're going to be very busy!
      I hope you enjoy Shirley if you do read it!

    I've read more classics since I started watching your channel a month ago than I have in the past decade. Thank you so much for the inspiration, Lucy!

    I’m very reluctant to read classics atm just because I’m in the middle of my degree and personally find them more difficult to get through, but I have a little list of ones I want to read once I’ve finished my degree and Shirley and Far from the Madding Crowd are definitely going to be added to that list now!

    Have you seen the film far from the Madding Crowd from the late 60s with Julie Christie, Terence Stamp and Alan Bates? It's good.

    Yessss! I love all of the Victorian literature on this list! North and South is one of my favorite books of 2017 as well. I should probably reread Shirley. I read it for school, and my reading experience was so rushed. I honestly don't remember much of it at all.

    • @lucythereader
      @lucythereader  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I maaayyyy have a tiny soft spot for Victorian literature. Can you tell?! I think it would be great to read Shirley now you've read North and South -- they're very similar!

    • @BlatantlyBookish
      @BlatantlyBookish 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha I have the same soft spot! Perhaps a reread of Shirley is in order. It would be interesting to think about in relation to North and South. I've also heard that Mary Barton is a good book to compare in context with Shirley (though I haven't actually read Mary Barton yet).

    I recommend you try; The Bear And The Nightingale by Kathrine Arden, The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde, The Gifts of Reading by Robert Macfarlane and if you would like to read more books inspired by Orkney like the Outrun you should check out the work of George Mackay Brown :)

    • @lucythereader

      I do have The Bear and The Nightingale to read, actually, and I'm really looking forward to it! I'll also check out the others -- thank you for the recommendations!

    I'm definitely reading Shirley this year, maybe when you read it for your Bronte project :D. I may have said this before but FFMC is tied with A Room With a View for my second favorite book of all time! I love it so much! And while I do think the 90s mini series does a better job adapting the book because it is longer so they can include more material, I do think the 2015 one is my favorite because it is so beautifully shot with gorgeous music and a wonderful cast (though I will say I thought Tom Sturridge was wrong for the role of Troy but that is just my opinion). Also I really love Matthias Schoenaerts as Gabriel

    • @lucythereader
      @lucythereader  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, do join in with the book club -- it's going to be lots of fun! I haven't seen the miniseries but I'm going to make it my goal to watch it now.
      Matthias Schoenaerts is SUCH a good Gabriel. He captures the Hardy hero so well. I actually liked Tom Sturridge, maybe not at first, but there's something about the way he plays Troy that makes me feel uncomfortable, just as I felt in the book. I'm looking forward to seeing him as Byron in the upcoming Mary Shelley adaptation too. :)

    Lovely list as always! I also included North and South in my top books of the year. I think is brilliant. I'm not the biggest Charlotte Bronte fan because I can't seem to get through Jane Eyre but I feel like her other novels would really work for me. Hopefully, one day I will find my Charlotte book. (BTW red really works for you lol)

    • @lucythereader
      @lucythereader  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Shirley is VERY different to Jane Eyre -- I could hardly get through it the first time I read it either, but Shirley was different right from the start. We're reading it in August and September for the Brontë Book Club, so you're very welcome to join in! (Thank you!)

    I've just finished reading Shirley today and I loove it ! But my favorite is still Jane Eyre. :D my favorite books of 2017 were " the mayor of casterbridge " by T.Hardy, "Eugénie Grandet" by Balzac and also "of mice and men" by Steinbeck.

      Ahhh I'm so glad you loved Shirley! I have to disagree with you on Jane Eyre, but I can see why it's your favourite! Really glad to see Thomas Hardy on your list too. Have you read any of Hardy's other books?

    Spoke to you at my school what is your advice of starting TH-cam

    • @lucythereader
      @lucythereader  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! My top tips are 1) Find something to focus on that you love and this will come across on camera, 2) Don't worry about your first video being perfect -- just try it and experiment and find what works best for you, 3) Have fun with it!
      Like I mentioned, you don't need fancy equipment at first. You can just use your phone and find something to edit with, like the iMovie app on an iPhone or Windows Movie Maker, and there are lots of tutorials on here to show you how that works.
      It's worth giving it a go, even if you keep your first video on private and don't decide to upload it until later on. You won't know until you try!

  • @jessbfoster

    People will think it harsh of me to point out but for so long I've listened to everyone on BT say "Bront-ayy" - we're not American, I don't get it, it's "Bront-eee" for us, remember the US have to be different (ditching the metric system, ditching syllables from Aluminium, etc. lol). But I thoroughly thoroughly enjoy your channel and your wrap of the year! x

    • @lucythereader
      @lucythereader  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That’s not harsh to say! Honestly, I say both - I never know which will come out! It’s not a conscious thing for me. I hear people say both! In fact, it’s more likely BronTEE because it was originally Brunty or Prunty, before Patrick changed it. So you’re right!

    • @jessbfoster
      @jessbfoster 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes and I guess an easy way for people to think about it is also to consider how we say Zoë! :)

    • @TeaBooksAndTazmyn
      @TeaBooksAndTazmyn 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had no idea about that! I always thought of Bront-ay as the surname and Bront-ee as the girls first name xx

    • @dafarce
      @dafarce 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sorry, you're wrong. The OED gives the name pronunciation as bron-tay. You are also wrong about the US ditching syllables. A correct spelling in the US M-W dictionary is "ALUMINUM," which is what your Sir Humphrey Davy named it in about 1807. It was later changed to "aluminium" only to make it resonate with sodium, potassium, etc. The version that came to America was, and remains, the real deal.

    • @jessbfoster
      @jessbfoster 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      All my Australian dictionaries give Bron-tee, it may very well be a case of the people slowly changing the pronunciation in the UK. Lecturers here all say the elongated e and I notice older Brits will too, perhaps US influence. There was no true 'first' as Davy messed it up the first time with bloody aluminum, hence why settling on aluminium as intended. Anyway, "aluminum" keeps getting auto-corrected to "the real deal" -- which is indeed *aluminium* . Yeesh. You can internet, top job, will serve one well.

      Wuthering Heights is a very close second for me - maybe even an equal first place! It’s impossible to choose. I love them both!
