The way I read long classics, and long books in general, is to set a small daily page goal--like 20-30 pages. If I want to continue, great! If not, I'm still making steady progress. I don't worry about how long it takes me to read the book. I have tackled Ulysses, War and Peace, Anna Karenina, A Suitable Boy, and all of Proust's In Search of lost time that way. It took me 6 months to get through Ulysses because I didn't always meet the page goal and I set it aside several times. But, I did it. War and Peace took just over 2 months. With Proust, since it is 7 volumes, I took breaks between each volume and spread it out over about 18 months. To me, it's better to be slow than pass up on some really great literature because it's long. I am currently rereading Proust, but instead of a page goal, I read it for 30 minutes every morning. I know on booktube people like to do wrap-ups at the end of the month, but I'd also enjoy weekly or monthly progress reports on longer books. It would seem more in the moment and I think it would be a great way to encourage people to reach for those big books without the pressure of a reading deadline. I would definitely be interested in a classics readathon.
Regina Lemoine If you're having to sit yourself down and read out of sheer force, I don't see what the point is of reading that book in the first place. Why do you have to set rules? Why isn't it motivational enough to read for the pleasure of it? Just to put another notch in your belt? Isn't your time valuable to you?
I would love a classics readathon! Although I’m not the best at doing readathons, but I’d love to read more classics in August - especially I have the whole collection of the new Virago Modern Classics coming for me 🙃
Yess, I am reading so much classics these days. A classic readathon would come just on time for me. I have missed your classic videos. Please host it :)
I would be so excited to participate in a classics readathon! That sounds like so much fun, I’ve been reading more classics lately and I’ve really been enjoying it
I’d love a classics readathon! I don’t know how many I’d get through, but I’d definitely join in. Sense and Sensibility is my favorite Austen. Elinor and Marianne are wonderful, and it’s one of her funnier novels.
Please do a classics readathon! Sense and Sensibility is one of the only ones I am yet to read. I have Vanity Fair on my shelf and I need to pick it up :) Outsiders sounds so amazing!!
Dane Reads yes which is why I need to do a readathon. Haha I just started reading through classics in the last year and I absolutely love them. But I am still neck deep in hundreds of years of masterpieces
A huge yes to the classic readathon! Classics take the 90 % of my reading, so I'm always up to that. Although, I'm a pretty slow reader and I do have at least 5 books to finish till August
Yes, yes and yes to the Classics readathon! Middlemarch is amazing but one to read gradually I think over a month. I'm hoping to get to Anna Karenina in September when my dissertation is over but to read Emma in August for some relief, so this would fit into the readalong perfectly. I'm currently reading Emily Bronte's poetry and it's so beautiful, I didn't expect to love it this much which is strange because Wuthering Heights is one of my favourite books.
I'm definitely interested in participating in the classics read, as I also just purchased the Penguin editions of Vanity Fair and Sense and Sensibility (working to build my collection of classics!). I read Sense and Sensibility years ago, but would love to read it again as a more mature reader. I just finished Camp Austen by Ted Scheinman as one of my nonfiction books for JA July, and I'm also currently reading If Walls Could Talk an Intimate History of the Home by Lucy Worsley and The Mermaid and Mrs. Hancock.
I’m in for the readathon!! I love all Jane Austen novels but I think Emma and Sense & Sensibility are my favorites. I recommend you the BBC tv mini series adaptations for both of these books, 2008 for S&S and 2009 for Emma; I watch them every year.
I would love be part of a classics readthon!! Im reading a Jane Austen book too persuasion ❤ and my favourite book by Jane Austen currently is Sense and Sensibility. Loved your video kisses from Brazil 🇧🇷💖
Have you started Anna Karenina yet? Wonderful, wonderful book. It took me two tries - the first time I picked it up I could not focus or get into it, but the second time I just could NOT put it down.
I am currently reading my way through Barbara Pym's novels and P. D. James' mystery series both are are really fun. Adding to that I'm starting to read Anthony Trollope's Barsetshire series starting with The Warden and alongside Angela Thirkell's books which borrowed Barsetshire as a fictional setting. Finally for nonfiction I am making my way through Britain after Rome by Robin Fleming, it's incredible, post apocalyptic and dystopian genres are so popular and here we have a case of it ACTUALLY happening, cities abandoned, mass migration, plummeting population, invasions, loss of technology and information it's all there.
I am also starting Sense and Sensibility and am super excited about it. Do you prefer the clothbound classics versus the penguin english library (paperback) editions? They both look so beautiful I want to collect both! But I'm not sure which one feels better in the hands, etc. I'm living in South Korea at the moment so I'm trying to make my online orders count 😉
For non-fiction, I don't usually read it cover to cover unless it has a narrative structure such as in a biography and maybe not even then. Instead, I just dip into it here and there where it seems interesting. That's how I would approach Virginia Woolf's diary or other similar books. You can enjoy bits of it, put it back on the shelf, then pull it out another time to look at it again. As it lacks a story structure, you don't have to read it like a story. I don't know that you'll see this comment as this video was made quite some time ago.
Thank you for discussing _Vanity Fair._ I've shunned the novel since seeing the adaption with Reese Witherspoon in red/maroon lipstick, which I highly disliked. I will give reading it a go and force myself to imagine the main character's face as my own concoction. It's worth it just for that pale blue clothbound edition.
Congrats on being able to read Sense & Sensibility without having watched any of the TV or Film versions - you’ll be able to experience the story fresh...it’s great 😊 Middlemarch is one of my all time favourites, you’ll really enjoy it
I'm really interested to know what made you stop with each book, but maybe it's different in each case. Do you do this a lot, or because of exams at the moment? Really good to hear about Emma Gannon- the book & podcast sound great for me at the moment, thanks!
Hopefully, the new Vanity Fair television production will be fine but I would be amazed if it surpasses the 1998 version starring Natasha Little, which perfectly captures all the complexities of Becky Sharp. If you can hold of it-it is easily available on through Amazon- it would really be worth watching. It is faithful to this wonderful novel. Enjoy your channel very much, Lucy.
100 times yes to a classics readathon!! (also Emma is one of my all time favorite books! 10/10 recommend)

Regina Lemoine it’s cool that you’ve found a way that works for you 👍
Such a good tip! :)
The only way as,if I put a big book down one day I have to make myself read which defeats the object of enjoying reading.
I would love a classics readathon! Although I’m not the best at doing readathons, but I’d love to read more classics in August - especially I have the whole collection of the new Virago Modern Classics coming for me 🙃
A classics readathon would be great 😊
