Emma is the funniest and most light hearted of the Austen novels. It is a good read following something dark or heavy.

2020 was 100 years since Clarice Lispector was born. Someone once said: “Be careful with Clarice. It’s not literature. It’s witchcraft.”. She’s unique!
I love reading Clarice Lispector too. Her style is unique and I find myself getting pleasantly lost in her books. “Agua Viva” is my favorite book by her. I also recommend another author who wrote in Portuguese, Fernando Pessoa. He’s awesome. And btw, your dress/blouse looks so lovely! Happy new year!
There’s a Brazilian novel called A Sucessora that is very, very similar to Rebecca. It’s author’s name is Carolina Nabuco. The plot is so similar that some claim Du Maurier plagiarised Nabuco’s novel as it was published before Rebecca and Nabuco sent a manuscript of her novel to the same publisher Du Maurier signed. We don’t know what happened, and I guess we will never know.
How similar? Like the same plot? I read Rebecca. Is it gothic?

By the way, Rebecca's plot has much in common with Jane Eyre and the author of Rebecca wrote a book about Branwell Bronte

I'm brazilian, and I hope you'll like our books 😊 Dom Casmurro is absolutely amazing. I haven't read Brás Cubas yet, but I'm sure it's also amazing. The Hour of the Star is also incredible, but it is quite hard to read, Clarice's writing is so interesting.
Have you read Return of the Native by Thomas Hardy? I loved that one! The classic I most want to read in 2020 is Anna Karenina 😊

I love Emma, it’s my favourite Jane Austen novel, it’s funny and silly and light hearted. Emma is terrible but I find her so relatable! 😂 I want to read more Asian classics if I can this year.

I envy you for embarking on reading Agatha Christie for the first time. I've read all of her novels, except her espionage ones and the romance novels she wrote under the name Mary Westmacott. I wish I could forget them all, so I could be surprised all over again.
Though I enjoyed 'Murder on the Orient Express', I wouldn't say it's her best, nor my favourite.

BTW, the very best book that Agatha Christie ever wrote was her autobiography. She remembered going to an event to celebrate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee as a little girl, lived through two world wars, married an archeologist and went on digs, travelled the world, met almost everyone who was anyone... what a life! I couldn't put it down.
My favourite bits were the memories of her Victorian and Edwardian childhood, the house in Torquay where she grew up, and her grandmother and "Auntie Granny".
I’ve just finished East Lynne myself for university, and I’m glad it was on the syllabus because I loved it and I’m sure I wouldn’t have picked it up otherwise. If you haven’t read it, I really recommend! I also haven’t yet read Emma and feel rather guilty saying I’m an Austen fan and it’s on my list this year. Love the content!

It's wonderful to hear which classics you're excited about this year! I'm hosting a massive Brontë reread on my channel this year called The Brontë Project! I'm so excited! I read Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights frequently, but it's been a while since I read some of the other Brontë works. I would also love to read Mayor of Casterbridge this year! I hope you love Agatha Christie! Her books are so cozy and comforting. Murder on the Orient Express was my first Agatha Christie too! It's not the best book of her's (so far my favorite is And Then There Were None), but I thought it was a good place to start. Oh and please please read Emma!!! It's one of my favorite Austen books! Emma is such an interesting character. I actually didn't like the movie as much as the 2009 BBC version, but regardless please read it!

I started reading Ethan Forme the previous year but something held me back to read it entirely. I would read it this year.
I am writing so many short stories together. It is just making me baffled at the same time I am enjoying it

Ah I loved this video Lucy! I may have to make one too, as I feel like 2020 wasn't a great year for reading classics for me. And yay for reading Emma (one of my faves!)
I want to read some more of Charlotte Brontë's books this year as I read Jane Eyre in 2020 and loved it! Specifically Villette and Shirley. I also want to read The Picture of Dorian Gray and Wuthering Heights, and probably some others as well. I've read few classics so I'm making it my goal this year to at least read more than one haha

I'm finally going to read early Russian Literature. Starting with Karamzin, Pushkin and Gogol. Then work my way through the Golden Age over the next few years.
Clarice Lispector and Pola Oloixarac are on my tbr too.
If you want to know more about Dom Casmurro, read Helen Caldwell’s book called The Brazilian Othello of Machado de Assis. He was greatly influenced by Shakespeare.
HI Lucy. Haven't seen you in a while; hope your studies are going well. Currently I'm following a France since 1870 course. I finally finished Germinal (in French) and am now reading Under Fire (in translation), my first Goncourt Prize winner. It's nice to see you and I hope you'll do more videos in 2021. I plan to read complete works of Jane Austen, 2 Dostoyevsky novels (Devils and Adolescence), Dead Letters from Gogol and quite bunch of Japanese classics!
Gogol is great for those of us of an irreverent bent. Ending of the nose is a classic. The strangest, most incomprehensible thing of all is how authors chose such subjects :-)
Is dead letters the same book as dead souls? Might be a uk vs us thing, and I'm not sure which version i have
@@annemontgomery3890 other than Dead Letters being album name for Katatonia and Rasmus, I never heard that name, but IDK, however there’s couple of novels called that from other authors... 🤷🏻♂️

I can’t wait for you to read Emma! I really hope you enjoy it, Did you ever see the amazing earlier BBC adaptation? The film was great but that ones even better! Earlier last year I read The Last September by Elizabeth Bowen and loved it, so this year I’m hoping to read more 20th century Irish or Anglo-Irish classics if I can find them! I did get gifted Ulysses for Christmas but I think I’m going to have to warm up to that one 😊

Murder on the Orient Express is a fine starter for Agatha Christie. That was my first as well. Afterwards, I went back to the beginning with her first Hercule Poirot novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles.
Lucy, Happy New Year. I hope that we have a lovely year of stories. I endeavor to start reading Emma by Jane Austen this year. I have joined the Classics Community 2021 Reading Challenge with excitement flickering about my countenance. I wrote a poem today and a fresh scene for my novel. I need to read Allen Raine’s short stories and I am sure that I am going to enjoy them. There is a certain magic and comfort in Lucy Maud Montgomery’s sweet storytelling and I recently read Emily of New Moon. As a writer myself, I was really able to relate to this book and I know you will see yourself reflected in the story. The book follows Emily Starr’s journey as an imaginative orphan to her life as a teenager where she spends her lonesome days writing. Her work often returns with rejection, which is something we have all experienced. I love you

I really liked Mayor of Casterbridge but holy hell it's crushing. Made me kind of nervous to go further with him (though I will do at some point).
Bras Cubas was GREAT. I picked it up at your recommendation last year and it was one of my best reads for 2020.
I *hated* Hour of the Star but I do seem to be in the minority. You'll probably enjoy it a lot more than I did.
As for me, I think I may make this year the one in which I finally make that last attempt on War and Peace, if I don't finish it this time I don't think I'm ever going to in future.
I hope you enjoy Emma, it has long been a favourite of mine. I have to say I am not a fan of Thomas Hardy, and it stems from my reading The Mayor of Casterbridge - I disliked that book from the start and have never recovered from it! A lot of your other planned books to read sound fantastic - and Emily of the New Moon is another favourite. My reading plans for the year include a classic each month - starting with Lady Austerley’s Secret - I started it last year and was enjoying it but then work interfered, so looking forward to finishing it, and will follow it up with either a reread of North and South (Gaskill) or maybe finally reading A Woman in White.... so many good books around.

Last year was my best classic reading year yet! I read at least 12 classic novels. Maybe more! This year I want to read: The Phantom of the Opera, Anna Karenina, My cousin Rachel, The Count of Monte Cristo, and Orlando!
my first Agatha Christie I read was from a Scholastic book order in 6th Grade. I felt I graduated from Trixie Beldon and Nancy Drew. The novel was the ABC Murders. After that I think I read at least 20 other of her novels. A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry was a really amazing book.
My wife just read and very much enjoyed L. M. Montgomery's Jane of Lantern Hill, if you haven't already read that one.
The only classic I've got on my TBR this year is Tess of the D'urbervilles because I think this year is going to be really busy for me since I'm starting my first year of uni. I tried reading Tess before and didn't manage to finish it so hopefully this time will be different. I loved reading A Christmas Carol in December so I think I'd like to read another one of Dickens' Christmas stories in December 2021 although that feels like a really long time in the distance right now lol.

In 2020 I read "The Hour of the Star" and "Dom Casmurro" and they are incredible books, really, but I need to recomend "The Devil in the Backlands", by João Guimarães Rosa, it's AWESOME, I 'felt' it!!
P.S: I'm anxious to know Thomas Hardy, Isabel Allende and Toni Morrison in 2021.
P.P.S: it's possible Du Marier plagiarized Carolina Nabuco, a brazilian author.

Jude the Obscure was also really good from Hardy. It was very readable. It said people were shocked by this novel, but i cannot remember why, unless it's about the cousin thing.

Currently I am reading the Count of Monte Cristo but for 2021 I actually want to read all of the Bronte sisters’ novels (Ive only read Wuthering heights and I AM OBSESSED WITH IT). Thomas Hardy’s works are also in my list, as well as Charles Dickens (my most fav classic author at the moment, I’ve read 4 of his major novels so far!) I have a full time work schedule but I really hope I can reach my classics reading goals for 2021 :)

I love Murder on the Orient Express! It's definitely the best place to start because it was also my first Agatha Christie and I fell in love with her immediately after this book!
I’ve read ‘Murder in the orient express’ this last year and was surprisingly engaged!! Murder and misters is not usually my thing but I quite liked it. Another murder book I’ve read that blew my mind I think you would like it (not sure I’ve ever seen you talking about it), it’s ‘The seven 1/2 deaths of Evelyn Hardcasle’, it was so good!!!
I'm currently reading Captain Corelli's Mandolin by Louis de Bernières - liking it so far!

New Authors for me are Alessandro Manzoni's The Betrothed, Alexander Dumas, and Erasmus.
Emma and Mayor of Casterbridge ... no matter how badly 2020 sucked for all of us - those are two classics alone that will make 2021 vastly better. Good to see some much needed focus on the depth of Thomas Hardy ....

I have also seen the newest Emma adaptation and I haven’t read the book yet. I really enjoyed the adaptation so I definitely do want to read the book.

My best friend got all of Jane Austen's books for christmas and they have the exact same copys in my school library, so we planned to read one book every two months. I already read Pride & Prejudice last year and i'm very excited for our little bookclub :)

I am also planning on reading another Edith Wharton - I read The Age of Innocence in 2020 and I think that my pick for this year will be The House of Mirth. I have read a number of Elizabeth Von Arnim's books and I have Father lined up for this year. I am also hoping to discover some new to me Welsh Classics and will be looking at what Honno has to offer.

I think you will enjoy Agatha Christie. Murder on The Orient Express. As you say, it's well known so a good one to start with and I can guarantee you won't look back. Agatha Christie does come under the Classics Canon as so many Authors are inspired by her.
I started my new years reads with Forever Amber by Kathleen Windsor. And if you haven't already you should definitely read it!

I’m hoping to get to more Wilkie Collins this year and to read a few more Hardy novels; I have maybe five left to read. I’m going to take part in #readchristie2021 as well as the Classics Community this year and I think if I was going to start with Christie for the first time I would read The Mysterious Affair at Styles as the first introduction to Poirot and then go from there. My favourite of hers is Dead Man’s Folly but that’s because I have visited Greenway several times and I can really visualise the setting of that novel. Happy New Year!
Yes, there are similarities between Rebecca and Vera, but Vera goes in a surprisingly different direction. I read Vera about a month ago and I'm still thinking about it.. I haven't read many Agatha Christie books because I'm not much of a murder mystery reader, but I did enjoy And Then There Were None because of its gothic feel. I love the variety on this list. Look forward to hearing your thoughts as you go.
I recommend Catweazle by Richard Carpenter, available on Amazon Kindle. Hard copies are out of print.

Had been meaning to watch this video for so long. Actually, I had forgotten about it until now. 😅
I generally don't know what to say about all the books you mention, except for the fact that they all look very interesting. However, this time, I thought I might just be able to give my two cents about Agatha Christie's books. My first experience with her had been Ordeal By Innocence, which I felt to be really amazing. That was followed by The Murder of Roger Ackroyd which I read for my third semester, and it certainly just blew me away. Christie has written so many books that there is simply a hella lot to choose from. And it's never boring for me, that's sure! Apart from these, I had discovered a while ago, she has written six novels under the pen name of Mary Westmacott; I read Unfinished Portrait among those, which, by chance, was the last book I had managed to complete last year, few as those instances had been. And trust me, it's so unlike any of these mystery-detective novels for which she is generally known to readers. That book is so much more tender and nuanced than what is usually expected from an author like her, which only shows what a terrific writer she actually is. Unfinished Portrait deals with so many aspects of human consciousness and conscience, and feels a lot like a diary of Christie herself, at least to me. That is to say, for all the books you introduce us to, this is a little recommendation from me to you. 😊
As for your TBR, it is, as usual, very much unique and varied. I had previously discovered authors like Eva Ibbotson of whom I really had never heard. In fact, I always go on and keep adding many of your recommended books in my wishlist. 😂

• Some books by Émile Zola's Rougons-Macquart series. Having tried Balzac in 2020, i am very keen on trying more 19th century ftench authors.
• Camilla by Frances Burney
• Silas Marner by George Eliot
• Anna Karenina by Tolstoy
• The Possessed by Dostoyevsky
• Lots more Thomas Hardy (Desperate Remedies, A Pair of Blue Eyes, A Laodicean, Trumpet Major) He is my favourite author, but i have only read 4 of his works (Tess, Far From..., Mayor and The Woodlanders).
• Finish the Barsetshire Chronicles by Anthony Trollope (have read 2 of 6)
• Buddenbrooks by Thomas Mann (in German)
• Shirley/Villette by C. Brontë
• No name by Wilkie Collins
• Harry Potter 2-7 (in Russian), I have already read the first one
• Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier (wanna see what the fuss is about)
• Trilby by George du Maurier
• Josephine Tey novels. I have only read Miss Pym Disposes so far.
• Finally complete my reading of Agatha Christie novels. I have read around 65 of 68 novels by her. (Not including the M Westmacott ones)
• Read a few 19th century books by indian authors.
• Dune or His Dark Materials

If you like Agatha Christie (and even if you don't!) you have to read Dorothy L Sayers. Her Lord Peter Whimsey series is extremely underrated but so much fun
I definitely want to read a few more classics in 2021. Specifically I would like to continue on with Jane Austen, because I've only read Pride and Prejudice (and loved it!). I've got Sense and Sensibility as well as Emma ready to go. Also, I've only read one Agatha Christie: And Then There Were None, which was amazing!
Sense and Sensibility is underwhelming compared to Pride and Prejudice, but I would really recommend Persuasion. It's pretty good!

I implore you to read Emma. It's great and I believe you'll love it. The atmosphere, characters and plot is divinely written.
Murder on the Orient Express is a fine place to start. It's a good one. I would always suggest ABC Murders as it is my favorite and I think it is better. But both should be a good start.

Also doing the challenge this year! There's something very Jane Eyre-ish about Emily of New Moon in particular. I think you will catch the parallels right away. The third novel of the Emily trilogy was as dark as everyone says. There's more depth to this trilogy than the Anne stuff and I wouldn't consider the series as a whole a light and frothy read. Happy reading!

I have some heavy books on my TBR for this year including my current read wuthering heights (not that heavy actually, but thicker than my usual classic). I wanna read Jane Eyre in a few months as well. Sadly, some of my ordered classics didn't arrive yet, but I still have some unread books at home.
I also want to include more books discussing things like LGBT+, anti-racism, feminism and other important topics. Preferably classics too and preferably written by people who maybe faced these issues/played important roles in the beginning of movements. I'm planning on reading one of those books a month

If you have never read it I recommend "The Book of Lost Things" by John Connelly.
You needn’t tell that Anne girl at Green Gables, but I love Emily of New Moon more. Maybe you will, too.

I'm actually reading Summer right now! I started it last night and I'm already 22% in, according to my e-reader. It's pretty good but my brain has fancasted Saoirse Ronan and Timothee Chamalet as the main characters.

I rediscovered your channel in 2021. I am reading Jane eyre for the first time and am loving it. I love books about orphans as it talks about their struggles and the world around them. Do you think you could recommend something similar to Jane eyre and Anne of green gabbles.

There are indeed some very clear similarities between Vera and Rebecca that I can't help thinking that Daphne must have taken her outlines from Vera (so with quite different results.) That being said I didn't like Rebecca but loved Vera, which is the more realistic of the two (and frustrating too ) I look forward for your Opinion.
Really? What didn’t you like about Rebecca? I read it in October and I thought it was a good book.
Well I definitely liked the writing. And that is about all I liked . The plot was very lacking. I mean I waited and waited and in the end...I was "Is that all is going to happen? "
The characters were very problematic and nothing to balance them. The whole novel was atmospheric but not much plot to justify its length. However I don't see why other people should not like it all the same :)
