Thank you, I was thinking I’d have to buy a new printer, but followed your guide and it worked. It still needs repeating every 30 photos, but far better than replacing the printer
I just have to say that I love you. This worked perfectly, after I was about to cry because I spent over $40 for new ink cartridges this morning and my black ink STILL wouldn't print no matter what I did. I'm still having to run the head cleaning utility a few times, but at least it's printing now. THANK YOU!
Hi James your a Star, i was ready to bin my beloved 720,i had tried everything else without success, after following your steps my printer is back to life again, Many Thanks.
thanks mate you helped me out on this one as my printer stoped printing black ink so i followed what you said and it worked but now i am back to normal again as not all the writeing is comeing out black is there a way of takeing it out and like run it under a tap all do i really need some cleaning things from ebay
Thank-you so much! I had no idea that sponge was in there or that it was causing my problems. I followed your instructions, ran two head-cleanings and my nozzle check shows all six colors again. You're my hero! (and your accent is lovely too.)
Thanks James! This worked great on my WorkForce 645. When I opened up the top, I just dabbed the little black sponge to the right of the paper (the sponge is held down by a metallic screen) with about five regular Kleenex tissues one-by-one until the ink all but disappeared from the last tissue. After turning the printer back on, I performed 1 regular head cleaning. My printer is printing like new again. Can't thank you enough!!!
Hi James, My Epson stylus photo PX730WD printer is showing that it is at its end of life, and I was wondering if there was a way to put fresh ink pads in also how to access them. Can you help please.
This tip worked on a WF-3640. After the error code 0x97, it would not attempt to print at all and I couldn't get the print head to move over. But each time the printer is restarted, it moves the print head across. So I pulled the plug at that moment and was able to dry out the sponges. There is one for black and one for CMY. They were both soaking. I did a nozzle clean after restarting. I had to do the procedure twice before it worked. Thanks for sharing James!
Wow, this was fantastic. I didn't even have to turn it off (I have an Epson XP-410) just found the sponge and blotted it a lot with a paper towel, and then ran the head clean utility. Hours spent trying everything and this worked in minutes. Thanks!!
Hi, I have the PX720WD and have no idea how to get to the sponge. There is a small screw, behind and to the right of the cartridges. What exactly do I have to remove, please? Thanks, and thanks for sharing. ;-)
I tried all that but after 2 or 3 clean cycles I am not printing a pattern just blank paper. I then used some towel soaked in water under print head moved the head to and fro a few times stil not printing a pattern and tried clearing again just the same. Even tried overnight with damp towel. I thave now move onto towel soaked with isopropyl under print head and I’m going try a prin head clean again. Afterthat I am out of ideas. Anybody got any suggestions?
Problem: After I soaked up the excess ink from the waste pad on my Epson PX720WD I am unable to get the pad to re-seat as it was before. A little white plastic stalk is poking up and won't be pushed back down, the printer head is unable to slide normally, and so when I turn the printer on I get an all-lights-flashing warning message. Can anyone help? Thanks.
James, What can I say. It's Valentines day and I could kiss you. (well maybe not) Just wanted to say a big thanks for this little gem of information. 26 times I cleaned my print heads on the PX730 and I honestly thought the heads were dead and it was bound for the skip. This simple tip sorted the issue and I'm up and running again. Cudos my friend.
As strange as it seems it's the right way to success. Use new ink (or cartridges) and be patient, you have to flush and remove a couple of times the ink on the cleaning sponge. I used one set of new cartridges with compatible ink to clean the nozzles completely. Now I will print regulary a test page and make sure that the replacement cartridges are not older than 6 months. Many thanks for the splendidly explained way to proceed.
I am having this same printer but on a4 size photo paper printing i am getting black line marks i don't know how to solve this can you please guide me?
I tried this, I took out even the sponge and dried it but I did not unplug the printer during printing but during its start process while the head was also moving. But after cleaning when I have started the printer the head goes to the end and stops there and makes a bad sound. on the screen says PAPER JAM but there is no paper jam. I close the printer and open it and the same. I do not know what to do. I think I mess it up. I hope I will find a solution.
Hi I have tried this but alas no joy when I print I am getting horizontal coloured lines which break up the picture I am trying to print. Can print text no problem, any more suggestions or am I off to the new printer shop?
I tried that I just cant get the yellow to print out even though I am using CISS and theres plenty of ink in the tank. Sucked all the ink on to kitchen roll almost dry but no joy yet with the yellow ink.
Hi James, I think you're brilliant ;) Just when I was thinking of buying a new printer I read your advice…and it works! You've made my day, thanks a lot.
Excellent! Thank you James. This worked after a bit of dabbing and 3 head cleaning cycles. Got rid of my old Epson because of this problem and now the newer one started. Thought this was because I have not used genuine inks.
I came across this video while searching for paper jam error solution. I can't seem to find anything stuck inside. I can't seem to find an answer on google either. Do you happen to know some trick for this problem too? (epson stylus px 730wd). Thanks
Sorry I don't, other than. Turn it all off remove the front and back tray, get a light and your hand in there to have a good feel around. Sorry I can't help other than that!
Thank a lot! I additionally filled parking place with window cleaner and left head in parking for 1 hour. Yellow, Black and Light Magenta colors work again in my Epson Stylus Photo PX820FWD. Repair service spent 3 weeks to fix it without result.
When the head is out of the way there is a sponge visible underneath where the head usually resets. Shine a light in there it will be black and clogged full of ink.
This saved my printer! though I ghetto rig'd a bit. Baby wipes (have kids) on the sponge, used like 4 or 5. Ran nozzle clean like 3 times, printed great! paper was a bit wet in the corner for like 5 pieces of paper then fine. Thanks!
Not sure if it's worked or not - but my printer started to print green instead of grey - was doing my head in completely - after hours and hours of research and colour profiles, ICC, colour management in Photoshop, Aperture 3 on a Mac etc... I found your video... hope this solves my problems!!!
Thank you for sharing this, worked great and printer back to normal, I also put a damp folded paper towel under the printer heads and moved the head over it a few times as well.
I had not used my printer for some time, and after putting in new ink cartridges only two colours was printing as they should. Therefore I used Your description. After this I now have four colours printing, but nothing from yellow and black. Have tried cleaning many times, not working. I guess this means there is nothing more to do. New ink is so expensive, only on the procedure used it shows almost half of it already used with my cleaning.
That's a drink IOU! Most answers address the normal cleaning fluid solution, whereas this simple answer of soaking up the excess ink on the pad worked immediately.
I use compatible ink in refillable cartridges, regular printing and cleaning keeps it working smoothly! Enjoy the new printer & of course the new baby! :) James
Not worked for me, dabbed loads on the sponge, also cleaned underside of printer head with Plenty kitchen paper inserted underneath running the printer head back + forth over it. it's just my black cartridge which is dot dashy on printing. Will have to have a re go at it.
Run a nozzle check to find out which nozzles/cartridge is blocked. If the head cleaning program repeat fails to work, one trick that sometimes worked to clear clogged nozzles on older models was to very slightly dampen the foam cleaning pad (pref with distilled water or head cleaning solution), and park the head back on the pad and allow it to soak for a few hours. I wouldn't try the other popular trick - syringing the cartridge ports - as it probably won't work on this model and damage the head
This along with the tip about of soaking the little sponge with distilled water for a couple of hours and parking the heads on it, cleaned and unblocked my printer (px720wd) heads. Thanks!
yorgasmatron what do you mean didn't work for me? I have engineering experience with over 12 printer models. Distilled water brings nothing. It is good you, at least, used distilled water - and not tap water, because for bubblejet-based printhead that would mean death via lime clogging and overheat; for any printhead same effect if its heated. Why distilled doesn't work, is because it needs to be heated to 60 Celsius to start affecting DYE ink, but its pretty dangerous to use on PIGMENT ink - as it will trigger sedimentation. A good solution is 80/20 distilled w./isopropyl.
Majou Nexian well it must have been magic then. Because as I wrote, after I used distilled water on the sponge and parked the printer's heads there for a couple of hours, the printer miraculously started printing normally. Reading a bit more about it, it seems I am not the only one to have had this miracle. Maybe it is not a miracle and it is just you being unlucky. In the 12 printer models. And there is a reason I said the "distilled water trick" worked rather than the "water trick". I don't just try anything even though the printer is quite cheap. I read about it from people who obviously know more about printers than you do. Maybe they have experience with 13 models! :D
yorgasmatron PX7xx and PX8xx are full dye. One can use destilled water - but the result will not be really sufficient, a isopropyl/destilled mix would be far more efficient. Read my answer again please. I had personal experience with PX830 mainboard repair, and those printers are very (as in "unnecessary") complex.
NO SCREW DRIVER REQUIRED! Epson PX720WD. I have just tried this and have a few observations of my own. First, set your typing to the right hand edge of the page, not centralised, as this will move the print head further away from where you need to be. Turn the power off at the wall as it is printing and unplug. Lift the lid, and on the right hand side above the inks there is an L shaped hole. Looking through this you will see a small rectangular grid 30mm x 20mm ish. To the left of this you will be able to get your hand and a folded tissue under the body to dab the grid and soak up the ink. I recommend you wear gloves as the ink will soak through the tissue. When no more ink will come off the grid. Close up and turn the power back on. It will spit out the last piece of paper. Run a nozzle check, then a head clean and another nozzle check.
James Just to say I think your simple solution has worked! The Light Magenta was not showing up on the Nozzle Check Pattern on my Epson PX730WD but hey presto the problem (crossed fingers!) appears to have been solved. Many thanks! Do your recommendations on refillable ink cartridges still hold good? It sounds potentially messy!
If it's having some trouble printing black try printing a page full of black text to see it can get things moving again, I've never used the cleaning solutions before from eBay but you can give it a shot! Good luck
This tip made me realise how much ink had pooled inside, and how to clean out the ink pad. As suggested by Greg Swinnerton (below) I printed a page with text on the right side so that it was easy to get the print head well away from the pads when I pulled the plug. My additional tip is to use a blunt pencil to poke the kitchen towel into the spaces between the baffles on there ink pad so that you can soak up even more ink. Another tip - slide a couple of old newspapers under the printer before you move it, as pooled ink can drip out.
Thanks for the info mate. I had been using this printer for about 5 months when it suddenly stopped printing most of the colours (bought it from new but had it in the box for 11 months because newborn took my office! :) So of course, out of warranty and Epson's professional advice was to throw it away and buy another printer!). I spent just over £200 when I bought it and now it's basically a black and white printer which takes up a lot of space! Are you using original ink in your printer?
Symptoms show that the pump is actually blocked. You should actually dry up the sponge then add few ml of isopropyl alcohol - do a cleaning, repeat for a total of 3 times. Then it should suffice. However the PX7xx and 8xx are horror printers! Unnecessary complex and lego-like built. Do not even think about disassembling them without service manual. They have an internal tubing between carriage tray and printhead, and it stays under pressure. The way its done, if even some ink spills beneath and around the printhead - its gonna short-circuit.
It sounds like you could be referring to the carriage lock, which is a white square(ish) peg below the front left corner of the black cleaning pad. In which case, while unplugged, turning the spur gear located on the left hand side of the carriage paper feed shaft away from you, MIGHT release it. Before proceeding refer to pages 140 and 128 of service manual - google for "Service Manual Epson Artisan 710/810" in quotes, ignore any PDFs that try to sell a copy as it can be had for free.
There is a screw in the back that holds the whole sponge pool, and is taken out from the bottom of the printer. And there is even a replacement to avoid the need of cleaning an ink soaked sponge.
There is an easier way to disengage the print head, just start the ink cartridge replacement process through the printer, lift up the lid and then pull out the power cable.
Hmm that is strange, well my Epson does it's a larger workforce model, the cartridge carriage is attached to the print head -maybe it'll be of more help to others.
Thank you, I was thinking I’d have to buy a new printer, but followed your guide and it worked. It still needs repeating every 30 photos, but far better than replacing the printer

Can you answer what is the sponge therefore. What purpose does it serve?
Thank-you so much! I had no idea that sponge was in there or that it was causing my problems. I followed your instructions, ran two head-cleanings and my nozzle check shows all six colors again. You're my hero! (and your accent is lovely too.)

Unbelievable - It worked on my TX810FW Multifunction - nearly bought a replacement :)
Great to hear! Should work on most printers with this cleaning method.

It worked for me, thanks
This worked! Thanks :)

Thanks so much this works
