+gofbero One thing to be in a briefing in the Roosevelt Room, quite another to be in the middle of a free fire zone, ain't it Toby? West Wing, WH Press Corps - the other Hundred Years War
I really like how it starts with Toby dropping something and picking it up off the floor - just perfectly sets up the train wreck that's about to happen.
I cried my freaking eyes out from laughing watching this trainwreck. Toby's press conference was worse than Josh's press conference where he called the press stupid. Brilliant scene!!!
josh pulling warp 9 (in the same shoes him mom sent him a few years back - that slide!) ...only to simply greet Toby with a calm greeting......Friendship at its finest...well...Washington D.C Friendship!
It was worse. It was opening the door for CJs recent promotion to Chief of Staff to be questioned for lack of experience or competence with the sexist undertones of ‘with her purse.’ Absolute self inflicted PR nightmare for a COS not even a week on the job.
0:50 AFTER outright saying that CJ was unqualified for national security matters which is part of the job of being COS with a place in the situation room.
Smartest, maybe, not the best. They're way too fond of having the "bad guys" set up the "good guys" for killer lines. It's like chocolate. Tastes great, but a whole lot is bad for you.
Joe Francis Entertaining, believable, thought provoking, challenges you intellectually and every character grows, evolves or collapses under the weight of life issues..... Brilliantly done. And I begin to know the characters so well that I can almost predict their next move (like I do with children) good or bad. There are times I'm surprised by some of their choices but I almost always understand why they made them.
Mad Men. Life on Mars (original British version, not the US flop). Read what I wrote. West Wing writers ARE smart, but far too cliched. Everyone is either a good guy (American liberal) or a bad guy (American conservative or pretty much any foreigner).
considering the verbal lashing Josh received from Toby after his press room implosion, I think it's safe to say he doesn't hold grudges... he could've come back waaaay hard on Toby.
I think that was the point Josh was trying to make, Toby spent half an episode yelling at Josh and when given the oppurtunity promptly made the same mistake
ajs1031 Well one you just have to come up with a "secret plan". The other undermines the confidence in the knowledge and capabilities of the Chief of Staff in the White House!
Toby is worse than Josh Lyman when CJ had a root canal, Josh when into the press briefing room and told the world that President Jeb Bartlett had a secret plan to fight inflation. LoL
I remember Josh once said Charlie had the hardest job in the White House. And Charlie is most certainly up there-but press Secretary takes the cake by far. In fact, CJ had the two toughest roles: Chief of Staff and Press Sec over 8 years. Most people don’t last in one of those jobs for 2 years
@Trafalgar1961 That episode was "Celestial Navigation". It was probably the funniest West Wing episode. Especially when Toby and Sam got lost in rural Connecticut(Its a very small state) while trying to bail a federal judge out of jail.
I swear I thought Josh was hauling ass just so he could be standing there, leaning against a door frame as Toby walked out, and with a smug smile say "Not as easy as it looks, is it?" xD And yes, Toby totally should have shot back "How's that secret plan to fight inflation coming along?"
CJ’s new position notwithstanding, didn’t President Bartlet specifically order her to do the briefings even if blood was gushing from her head from a buffalo stampede? I’ve a very clear memory of that.
He did. Bartlet specifically said, "C.J., if blood is gushing from the head wound you just received from a stampeding herd of bison, YOU'LL do the press briefing."
CJ was an expert when it came to "charm and disarm" with the White House Press Corp. She could be witty and playful when needed but firm and assertive if required. Josh and Toby on the other hand were patronizing when dealing with reporters and boy did it backfire on both of them spectacularly. Josh came off as arrogant and Toby was straight up dismissive and the Press Corp had a field day with both of them and rightly so........
I love watching CJ just stare at the screen in horror lol. And then Jed taking of his cheaters like "What the hell!? Who is that and why is he there?!" 😂😂😂😂
Josh went flying down there just to celebrate the fact that his ‘secret plan to fight inflation’ was now only the SECOND worst press conference of the Bartlett administration.
That storyline of Toby being a press secretary and the blond girl assisting him is the worst storyline in the WW. Completely unbelievable. It doesn't fit his character.
Josh fails. Toby fails. Sam fails. The implication is that CJ is infinitely better than anybody else in the world, dead, alive or yet unborn, to deliver a press briefing. Yawn.
I enjoy that the boys all got to learn first hand just how hard CJ's job was.
When did Sam learn?
Vs Ainsley
Yep. The Secret Plan to Fight Inflation.

After this, Josh no longer had the worst press briefing in the Bartlett Administration.

Lol, I bet Josh was thinking, "Thank God, now my press conference isn't the worst in the history of the administration."
For the first second probably but the rest was a second-hand embarrassment and frustration. Judging by the run and slid.
Whatever happened to that secret plan to fight inflation? 🤔
lol would anyone even notice "a secret plan to fight inflation" nowdays?

See Josh was just being a goofball. Toby comes off as kind of a dick-head here.

The best part about this is the President silently taking his glasses and focusing on contemplating what's going on in the Briefing Room.
I cried my freaking eyes out from laughing watching this trainwreck. Toby's press conference was worse than Josh's press conference where he called the press stupid. Brilliant scene!!!
It was amazingly brilliant. It is the type of scene that makes a person feel better about their own bad days!
Thing is, the press ARE stupid and always will be.
""Are you sure you want your one question to be that stupid?" is a classic line from Josh though.
I love Josh racing through the West Wing just to take the piss out of Toby.
Yes, Josh rushing through the West Wing was priceless!

Toby should have come back with, hey how's that secret inflation plan coming?
LMAO
They should have had you helping to write the show! I love your humor!
"It was an ambush!"
"Then you should have swatted at the reporters with CJ's purse!"
The look on Margaret's face at 1:06 though, she just knows this isn't ending well.
And can we all take a moment to appreciate how Margaret stuck around to be CJ's secretary?
The moment in 1:25, where you have Josh sliding through and the small echo... phenomenal editing.
Josh came in like a wrecking ball
That slide actually looks like a semi-hazardous stunt; I wonder how many bruises Bradley sustained before they got a usable take.
I didn't think Margaret and CJ could match Margaret and Leo but I loved them together.
yeah i like carol and c.j.
AND WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING PRACTICING THE PRESIDENTS SIGNATURE?!
Yeah, this was even worse than Josh's epic presser fail.
I though he was crystal clear about the secret plan to fight inflation that didn't exist and that he didn't support although it didn't exist.
Give points to Toby, he learned from his mistakes and goes on to brief the press so he got better. He was never as hopeless as Josh.
Bartlet "Are you telling me that not only invent a secret plan to fight inflation but now you don't support it."
I loved that line :-)
@@iandhr1 Barlett: Who did the press briefing?

I have it! "Send CJ to swat them with her purse" is none other than the much alluded-to, possibly not-Josh-supported Secret Plan to Fight Inflation!
Love it!
1:25. I love the way Josh screeches to a halt.
Just some excellent filmmaking - Josh’s running really ties the geography of the West Wing together.
Right after Josh says "purse" you can see Toby crack the beginnings of a grin.
Toby and Josh, 2 people who should be permanently barred from the press room. That was almost as bad as "We have a secret plan to fight inflation."

ajs1031 Well one you just have to come up with a "secret plan". The other undermines the confidence in the knowledge and capabilities of the Chief of Staff in the White House!
Well a secret plan to fight inflation is reasonable and negotiable rather than using a purse to swat bad people.

I can’t remember why Toby was in there doing a presser. CJ was totally unaware. No root canal excuse this time.

CJ-“My PURSE!”
How was Toby not raked over the coals for this? The same way Josh was with his Secret Plan to Fight Inflation?
@Trafalgar1961 Yep, that's the one.
That is a funny image, seeing CJ Cregg in Ramallah swatting suicide bombers with a purse
