This was my dream game and i was honestly kinda hurt when development stalled. It felt like all the progress and potential they had for the game was never going to happen. Them resuming development has now had me in a state of cautionary hope hype.
"Hope Hype" 😅 I'm cautiously optimistic too. I hope that the proposed changes and plan for how to test and role them out will work and improve the game overall without losing the core of what makes the game interesting and exciting.
Ha ha. Me neither. I was trying to attract those people that might have written off the game as dead or just put it on the back burner with that title and thumbnail. Or, make it sound like something interesting enough (which it is) that if you didn't know about it that you will want to know about it.
Yeah it has, I have addressed that in more recent videos. That is very true. At the moment, it is more like a shared single-player sandbox than an MMO... There are occasional player-run events like the recent EosCon that bring players together, though.
It doesn't matter if 2 people are still "working" on the game. It doesn't matter at this point what Lauri says. He is the same person that said "funding is secure for the future, no need to worry" and then literally months later layed the devs off. It doesn't matter if the 2 devs "working" on the game finish something new to bring to the universe. It doesn't matter because without a player base, the game is dead. And a few new features aren't going to trick us into coming back to play. MAJOR things NEED to happen to bring players back. Until then, yes, the game is DEAD.
It is because of the slow state that I put that asterisk at the beginning. I understand that the game is nowhere near where it needs to be to take off in any way, but for me, hearing that anybody is working on it and that there are announcements on the near horizon makes me happy. It was only a few months ago that absolutely nobody was working full time on the project. From the looks of it, MAJOR things are planned (but I admit, haven't actually happened yet). So, if you consider a game "dead" when it currently has a very small active player base and no patches planned for some time, then yes, it's dead. I like to think of a dead game as one that doesn't have such a large community of people who left but still wish the game would do well and developers that are ramping up development.
I guess in my eyes, a dead game is one that has no chance of living. For some people, "dead" seems to mean "not doing well at the moment" or more generously, "doing very poorly at the moment." In either case, where we seem to draw the distinction is about how optimistic we are for the future. You wouldn't say that someone sick is dead until their heart stops beating and their brain activity goes to 0? Even then, extreme measures are able to bring someone back from there if done well. I don't think games are any different. I also wonder how much of this "the game is dead and always will be" sentiment actually serves to create that exact future. For example, if a future potential investor looks at what people think about the game and sees tons of negative stuff, then they will choose to not invest, thus making the game coming back even harder than it otherwise would have been. I know that many who say the game is dead will claim to be "realists" but I find the attitude a bit defeatist instead. I also know that my attitude has been called "toxic optimism" but I find that expression utterly repulsive and against the very nature of the human spirit. Of course there is a place for realism, and times when to cut one's losses, but that never has to come at the cost of hoping for better in the future. If you are only realistic now and expect nothing better in the future than that is the future you will end up creating since that's the only one you will feel possible. Optimism rant over. Regardless of our disagreement about the game's status, I hope you can still enjoy my videos about the game, even if you decide to never play the game again. :)
@@XenoCow The game isn't just "not doing well" it absolutely flopped. It has a very small amount of active players and is just basically asteroid mining simulator. There's no community servers, there's no mods, the company running the thing is super scummy to begin with (as one mentioned before the mass of dev lay-offs after "securing funding"). The game is dead because the company killed it, the two active devs are basically just doing CPR on a 3 year old corpse. EDIT: I'm honestly just tired of the rug being pulled from under me every single time I'm excited about a game, be charged an arm and a leg for said game, and then the devs just go "Meh we're done for now, see you maybe later at some point maybe." A lot of players see the game as dead because they feel betrayed and/or hurt by the company who made the game, and a non-active playerbase generally means dead in anybody's eyes but apparently yours. A game can be temporarily dead or permanently dead. Who knows, maybe the CPR will bring the 3 year old corpse back but I doubt it.
Seems pretty abandoned to me. I'd rather it not to be but there hasn't been any major updates in years. I felt like they brought something really cool and unique to the gaming industry for a simulated space game which eventually all will be fully voxel built by players 4 players. I hope they spark some more life and major bug fixes into the game and possibly make it easier for new players if they're so lucky for them to have a smooth gaming experience. I felt I had to go Leaps and Bounds on TH-cam just to understand how to build a ship then further work with the community just to understand how to even make Logic for a ship. I know these systems can be terrifying to some basic players. Bring it back to fun not work!
Hopefully the CEO isn't making things up and there will be some kind of announcement by the end of next month. 🤞 As for the new player experience, yeah, it really does stink. I just recently walked a friend through the tutorial and man was that a painful experience, and not really helpful for what the actual game will be like either. There's been lots of player discussion about wanting some kind of Developer faction based intro that can show new players what the game is all about without them having to fight with the game but instead enjoy the combat and actually learn the mechanics. On the ship-building note, one of the things on my list is a very thorough yet as quick as possible video about how to build a ship.
I've heard that a couple times now. I think there is something with my headphones that makes my voice louder or the music quieter. For me it sounds just fine. I have taken this into account and lowered the music volume as much as possible in my videos after this one.
Despite the negative reviews, me and my group are remaining here indefinitely! Those of us who survived the purge of Worlds Adrift are few in number, and those in the Glorious Sky Armada are much fewer in number. Nevertheless, I'm constructing our new home here along with rebuilding our once great fleet. There is much to be seen from this game and it's development, and we from the GSA aren't going anywhere! So if there are any other survivors out there, just know we are here!
That's awesome to hear. The social parts of this game, and the non-in-game player community stuff is one of the most interesting parts of the game. I wish the best to you and your group and hope that you all will find some of my videos useful, or at least entertaining.
They 100% need some sort of fast travel system. I spent 3.5 hours irl travelling towards the center of the belt. There was nothing to do during that time. You could go hours and not see another ship out in the belt, again another flaw for an MMORPG. Some quick ideas would be for fast travel gate it behind a resource you can easily find with less than an hour of travel time. Would also help markets as im sure people would mine that to sell for fast travel fuel. Now as far as not seeing other players, create hot spot events randomly around. For example server wide broadcast about a rare mineral discovered at an easy to get to location or NPC ship distress signals. Players can come to the location whether to help protect the ship or finish it off and scrap it depending on alignments, so there would be some sort of faction/union system. Anything that generates engagement
One of the things that will help with those kinds of issues will also just be more players and player stations that can house many players publicly. That way, you wouldn't fly 3.5 hours out to the middle of the belt. You would fly maybe 20 minutes to one station, hang out there for a few sessions before flying another 20 minutes. If you wanted to go really far, you could hitch a ride on someone's capital ship that could ferry you out somewhere far. You can already do the capital ship fast travel now, but you still need to fly out to the locations you intend to warp between now at least once to create a navigation chip to those spots. We'll see what the official plans are soon enough!
I love starbase's ship building, but they kinda blew their chance of having a large playerbase with how early access went; they aren't going to get that same chance again.
I agree that it is unlikely that there will be 10,000 players online at one time any time soon if ever. I think I mentioned it, but the CEO did acknowledge that they screwed up the launch and that they really don't have any second chances. What's coming to the game sounds less like a continuation of the same but a version two almost. Also, just yesterday the CEO said that April 30th is the day when the company is going to make the announcement about the future plans.
May I ask what you are watching the video with? For me using headphones, it is almost too quiet. I just tested the video with the mono speaker built into my monitor, it was too loud that way.
Weird. I tested with some cheap earbuds and it was a bit on the loud side, but still not bad. When you say "loud" how loud do you mean? Is it just a distraction or is it impossible for you to make out what is being said easily? I'm not sure how I can get the audio sounding nice on all speakers since if I were make the music any quieter, I wouldn't be able to hear it with my headphones and presumably others with similar ones. If you or anyone who comes across this has any suggestions, I'm welcome to them.
one of my favorite games! i so, so hope they will make these promises true, though i am still a little sceptical. but a very slow development pace is actually what i personally prefer because unlike when it was first released i dont have much time anymore to play this game, so for me slow development is good to keep up, though i understand that it is not what everyone wants
I really hope so too. It does seem very much like we are going to at least get that announcement of the plans next month, just a day or two ago the CEO responded to a bunch of posts on the forums about what can be done to help the game. He just yesterday again said that there should be the big news by the end of next month. I think slow development is exactly what you (and the rest of us) are going to get. I mean, if the game becomes super popular in the near term, then Frozenbyte might feel its worth it to put more than the small team (I think it's around 5 people now) to work full time on the project. Until then, things will take time.
You're very welcome. Did you mean to say "glad it's [not] completely dead" or do you mean what you wrote exactly. It seems like the beginning of your comment is positive about the game but then can't agree with the end of the comment.
I don't think I have heard of them before. The only cult-like groups I can think of were those Dark Star guys or maybe Collective. I don't think the normal PvPers quite count.
Establish first and foremost what "Dead" means and it cannot be specific or exclusive to this game. It must be a standard across all games, what does "Dead" mean?
That's very fair. Personally, I don't really use the term "dead game" myself and was mostly poking some fun at those that accused the game of being a "dead game." If I was pressed to define it, for myself, I would say a game is dead when nobody (zero people) plays it anymore. So, for example, Club Penguin is a dead game since it can no longer be played, and thus is not played, by anyone. There are fan versions, but they are not the original. Similarly, although Super Mario Bros. is very old and has not been patched, I would not consider it a dead game since it still has many players. I would describe the more common version of "dead game" to mean a game with a low player base and/or one with limited future prospects of becoming more popular or being updated. I think that people often have their own levels of trust in the future prospects of games and how many players is a "low" number. Others seem to think that a game that had some number of players and now has fewer while not yet having all the promised features is a "dead game."
I got stuck in a shadow server after the first month. Devs couldn’t fix it. Reinstalling the game didn’t fix it. I never saw another player again. I hear this is a very common issue, which makes the game a single player game where the experiences are entirely fellow player based. Not fun
I have never heard of the shadow server issue. :< That really stinks. In a couple months when there is a bit more activity from the devs but still not a lot of players, I suggest you try and contact them again. That kind of bug is a really serious problem!
Sweet little video 👍 I am unsure though if we ever got it confirmed that the teaser of that cockpit was for a warp device, I think it was just dropped in chat once without full explanation.
@XenoCowEntertainment the ui is very similar to the uis on station and capitals so it is not baseless, but it might as well just be some sort of generator control, not sure.
I didn't go into features much since the CEO has been hinting in such a way it can be hard to tell fact from joke. Whatever is coming is going to not be what we expect (aside from addressing the three major points he wants to address). We should find out in ~1 month now what the plans are!
On launch I remember heading out with my guild and running a 4+ fighter ship squad to attack cargo ships. Was so sick having the identical ships flying out together and blowing up some droids. But was a shame that my kills never counted on the kill count metric and we always had bugs causing people to get yeeted off the ship. If this game comes back full swing id love to get back into it. Just would like to see better navigation/detection systems, a map, warp travel, and more design decisions that respect a players time and minimizes the gravity of a loss
I remember all the excitement around launch too! It was awesome to see all the new players trying all sorts of things out and teaming up to get up to all sorts of trouble. From what I hear of the plans so far, all those points you want to see improved are being considered in some form or another. I'll make a video when the plans are announced for the comeback patch.
Unless they come back to it and make some plan to bring some NPC's to blow up at the very least.... It's dead. I miss this game ;n; Did it ever get confirmed if they lost their investor with the Russian/Ukraine war? The rumor was one investor was Russian.
I'd wait until next month to hear what the plan is before writing it off just yet. As for the war issue. Here is a direct quote from the CEO: "to frame it, a number of funding partners said that the war has a significant effect to funding. Similarly, once the good guys win, it's likely that it will have a positive effect on funding globally. But when does that happen..." Lauri Oct. 9, 2022, Discord But I think that's just about getting new funding. It seems the real problem was running out of the funding they had already gotten because they had only accepted enough to get them through the development time they expected. But upon seeing that things were taking much longer than anticipated, decided to cut their losses and figure out how to get the game profitable later.
@@XenoCow thanks for the quote. Last track I had, nothing was really clear one way or another so there was just speculation. I'm always hopeful. For myself and the community as the game was amazing. But for Lauri as well as it's his dream game and I'd hate for anyone to experience that sort of loss. Fingers crossed!
That's a fair reason for not playing. The devs have discussed that idea and it seems like the peer-to-peer nature of much of the game and many micro servers that provide the backbone of keeping track of things are quite difficult to get running. They currently don't have any plans to release any servers but have mentioned that if they were to abandon the game they might spend some time working on getting the server code ready for release. I too like the idea of being able to more thoroughly own the things I enjoy and having to rely on a server for a game I like to function at all is a bit frustrating. I do see the merits of having a centralized server instead of allowing for many community run ones since this game is intended as an MMO and some features won't make very much sense if there are only a handful of players in the world. That's why things are so strange in the game now, I suppose.
Try to siphon off some WoW players, maybe some of the addicts still playing RS, even old school RS. I hear their q p s are huge. Get some prison staking going.
I think that kind of thing will be possible once there is more structure to the game. When nobody could play the game, one of the most fun things to watch was all the back and forth between the different companies. Once the game has real features to support companies, then MMO groups from other games will feel more welcome probably. What are "q p s?"
@@fr4me.01My guess is that the intent is "MMO players might enjoy another MMO" and that "If you can get those kinds of passionate players, then the game will have a good future" or something like that. I do think that Starbase would be a hard sell to WoW players, but I could imagine a future where the game allows for those kinds of players to enjoy it. Who knows!
I wrote a comment a few years back saying this game would be a scam mark my words. People got really salty at me and unfortunately I was correct. It was so obvious they were just baiting anticipation with those fake status report videos
Scam is a strange way of putting it because the developers lost money on the game and had to furlough many employees upon realizing they couldn't meet their deadlines. If it was a scam, then it was a very bad scam. Why hire ~100 people for a scam? Might as well just hire a couple and make big promises anyways, at least that way you end up with some money at the end. I understand what you mean, though. By scam, you mean "your money will not get you what you expect." And for the time being, that is correct. I do think you will be wrong in the long term, or at least hope that you are wrong. I think the upcoming announcement, and the public opinion of it, will help us to see which of these futures will come to pass.
@quintonbottoms5766 It is for sure a task they were not ready for and a game far bigger than anything they had ever attempted. They scammed themselves. Hopefully they learned their lesson and will continue forward with more humility.
For the moment, maybe. There is development going on, the 2-3 guys (down from I think over 50 before launch) are running into more problems than anticipated. There have been patches to the test universe almost weekly, sometimes multiple times a week. But from a what you can do now point of view, there's not much new since the last major post-launch patch and not a whole lot of players to do it with.

Sweet little video 👍
I am unsure though if we ever got it confirmed that the teaser of that cockpit was for a warp device, I think it was just dropped in chat once without full explanation.
There was some waffling not-not-confirmations. I should maybe have been more clear that it was not confirmed.
@XenoCowEntertainment the ui is very similar to the uis on station and capitals so it is not baseless, but it might as well just be some sort of generator control, not sure.
Love me some SB!!! If they add those features one day, ill be one happy space bum!
It's dead.
I miss this game ;n;
Did it ever get confirmed if they lost their investor with the Russian/Ukraine war? The rumor was one investor was Russian.
Sorry if there's a double post. My mobile is being dumb.
9, 2022, Discord
But I think that's just about getting new funding.
🤞
No private servers is why i didn't join it.
What does WOW have to do with Starbase?
@@fr4me.01My guess is that the intent is "MMO players might enjoy another MMO" and that "If you can get those kinds of passionate players, then the game will have a good future" or something like that.
I do think that Starbase would be a hard sell to WoW players, but I could imagine a future where the game allows for those kinds of players to enjoy it. Who knows!
@@XenoCow its a juvenile depiction of what is running through the minds of 13 year olds all day
@@selwin5442 I don't think most 13 year olds even know what WoW is. ha ha! The oldest game they know is probably Minecraft.
@@XenoCowI think you’re right. Scam is the wrong word. Sham would be more fitting. The devs had no idea what they were doing but they faked it anyway.
@quintonbottoms5766 It is for sure a task they were not ready for and a game far bigger than anything they had ever attempted. They scammed themselves. Hopefully they learned their lesson and will continue forward with more humility.
:(
Other people were pretty fast this time. I think you'll get it next time.
ye its dead xd
For the moment, maybe. There is development going on, the 2-3 guys (down from I think over 50 before launch) are running into more problems than anticipated. There have been patches to the test universe almost weekly, sometimes multiple times a week. But from a what you can do now point of view, there's not much new since the last major post-launch patch and not a whole lot of players to do it with.
