Ashford’s death was a beautiful and fitting end to his journey, showing how much he had grown as a character. The choice to have him sing at the end worked perfectly to send off his character.
"I was sick and nigh to death but I vowed with my every breath, For go with wisdom ways, When I sail." .... Trust me Marco Inaros is in trouble now. The fact that the character is so despicable is proof of how good is the actor who plays him, I watchedh some interviews and he's so funny.
Of note; "regrowth gel" that Amos was using on his fingers was mentioned in the very first episode of season 1, by the belter with the severed arm on The Cantibury 😯😯😯
I think the reason Arjun was so upset was pretty well laid out over a few episodes and his actions are understandable even if you don't agree with him.
"even our dreams are small" was said by both the belter Chrisjen was torturing in Season 1 episode 1, and by Dawes to Miller. Also, the tortured belter was caught "smuggling Martian Stealth Tech", likely from the same syndicate that Bobby joined. THAT is how early they were seeding these things 😯😯😯
Meg, you are one of the few people (it seems) who completely and quickly gets why Ashford doesn't kill Marco in that moment. Sadly he's not at all fleshed out in the books as he is in the TV adaptation, though other characters and events are. The song he sings is an adaptation of the "Ballad of Captain Kidd". William Kidd was executed in 1701 in London, England for piracy. The song was written and published the same year.
Happy you're back into it. Season 4 is a jarring difference compared to all others because of unique circumstances. Doesn't mean it's bad, but there is a reason people struggle with it the most. Luckily it was full of important setup that will pay off over the next 2 seasons (I know you're ahead on Patreon) and really solidifies this series as one of the best sci fi shows ever.
I always felt that scifi on "planets" feel cheap, but after rewatching The Expanse multiple times I've really grown to appreciate season 4, exactly as you say, because it sets everything up so well, but also because Clinton Shorter's music really gets to shine here. And among multiple new themes, I appreciate the western, "new frontier" theme they explored.
Ashford's nickname was "The Ghost Knife of Callisto" and in his final moments he really looks ethereal with the dim light of sol behind him and you best believe he's going to haunt Marco
I never got any inkling that Esai was cheating with that girl. Just because a man is friendly with a woman, or girl in this case, does not mean they're having sex. To be honest, her feelings towards him seem stronger than his towards her. Everyone gushes about Amos' "I am that guy." and rightly so, but his bloody-smiled, "Thank you." in this episode might be even better. Arjun isn't blindly supportive of Chrisjen because she crossed a line in using the death of their son for political gain and in leaking privileged information for political gain. He was able to support her through her other misdeeds because she was doing them for the benefit of Earth, these were done for her own, personal benefit. He saw her growing a lust for power that she'd never had before. Once she's learned some humility, and realizes why what she did was wrong, they'll be back together.
Yeah, it's not _always_ true in "The Expanse" season finales :(. _Such_ a great character. And I appreciate that his "undoing" is a _civilised_ choice born of love and wisdom - sparing a life. Ashford died the better man he wanted to become (and went out like an absolute legend). Also one of those times the show very wisely chooses poetry over realism (because we shouldn't have been able to hear him sing at the very end - the air that would've carried it was gone - but of course we _had_ to hear him sing at the very end). Roll on S5, some _truly_ great stuff to come IMO. No spoilers but all i'll say is if you think you love Naomi _now_ ... keep watching :).

Traditionally, the outgoing president leaves a personal note in the desk for the incoming president...as we see Avasarala do here, This was the second time Marco has been allowed to live. But, yes, Ashford understood why he could not kill Marco in front of his son...Ashford couldn't have killed both of them...Filip would have killed Ashford and then continued Marco's mission with a harder heart. Marco's tactical screen showed eight asteroids targeted for Earth.
Ashford: You have to think about the people they leave behind, who might seek revenge Marco: Kills Ashford because he's basic Somewhere on Tycho Station: Drummer's eyes immediately turn glowing red, and the Kill Bill revenge siren starts pouring out of her mouth
Meg Mage: Never liked that ending with Ashford. He was going to die either way, might as well shoot Inaros. Remember: in Season 3, Ashford ordered the 'unaliving' of the Roci crew twice. Ashford wanted Holden & Naomi shot in front of everyone for wanting to temporarily shut off all the Engines. After spending the first half of the season lecturing Camina about a country of Laws. Then throwing out those Laws as soon as it didn't fit his narrative. At that point he should have on an orange wig and red hat I too look forward to reading those books and finding out if Ashford was a more honorable person ☮️
Camina can't space a guy who knowingly sold drugs and could've caused the deaths of multiple people. Ashford can order the deaths of James and Naomi for just wanting to temporarily switch off the Engines with no legal recourse. No law just the will of a tyrant 🍊🤵
