    FYI The budget didn't change. Amazon had nothing to do with the production, That was still ALCAN. Amazon had provided a rendering engine, but according to the show runner the main reason for the improvement in the look of the fourth season was that the production team had gotten better with the post production.

    As Ty Franck once said in a podcast (can't remember which one) about why the roci lands on hot steam thrusters rather than the main drive: "so we had some discussions and decided that the Roci landing in a self-made crater-lake of magma while flattening the settlement with nuclear-strength blast-shockwaves was a bad idea. And that was the end of any pushback on that front". This show knows very well who its audience is, which, as one of "those people", makes me love and respect it all the more. Oh, and if you're wondering why no-one is even thinking of messing with the roci this season, well there's your answer. That warship's engine alone can kill everyone on Illus in a snap.

      In the book, they land it on the side, changing the floors into walls and vice-versa (well, for a quarter of the walls, anyway). Not only does landing on its tail make a lot more sense in-universe, but it meant they didn't have to rebuild all the Roci sets in rotated versions

      @chaost4544 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      The previous poster is right ...The Normies were extremely influential in getting this series another shot; at least as far as TH-cam is concerned. The creators of the series created a character after one of The Normies reactors. That community was instrumental in helping the series continue on and the creators of "The Expanse" specifically watched their reactions to the series as it developed. It was one of the few reaction channels at the time reacting to the series that was big enough to throw around some weight for the creators to take notice.
      I will never forget and will always have positive vibes towards that reaction channel because of how they handled this series.

    In the books, the Roci does actually land horizontally, it's mentioned several times that the walls become the floors. Obviously for TV purposes, it was easier to just have the ship land vertically, which makes more logical sense anyway.

    • @eds1942
      @eds1942 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      On the one side of the model (the side with the comm array) there are even vented thrusters (6 vstol style) for such a landing. The thing in the books was that walls and floor would reconfigure for the purpose. The way the did it in the show is more practical. I just wish that the off-market landing rig wasn’t as obviously a custom, non standard mod.

    18:08 The Roci got several upgrades since the ring, one being the ability to land on planets with engine mounted landing gear scaffolding, and the main upgrade, a spinal-mounted rail cannon. In universe, most rail cannons are turret mounted on larger battleships, but since Mars is de-comissioning their war-fleet, rail cannons can be had cheap, and the Rocinantes spinal-mounted rail cannon is pure custom installed (thanks to Fred Johnson wanting the Roci crew to do him "special" jobs now and then). There might only be a handful or less ships in the entire universe Roci sized with a rail gun. They of course have to point the entire ship in the direction they want to fire, but still.

    Bobbie "did what military command told her to" until her face-off with Alex and Amos, during which she went rogue and killed one of her own team. That can be seen as treason. Also, Bobbie's arc this season follows the story from the novella "Gods of Risk."

    So just a point, this is a bit different than the Alaskan gold rush in that during this one, the prospectors aren't just risking their lives. The grizzly bears these prospectors might run into might be carrying nuclear weapons.
    Twice now, humanity has been in the crosshairs of a species ending threat from these grizzlies. The protomolecule would have hijacked all life and repurposed it to build the ring, and the automatic defenses on the ring would have destroyed the entire system to eliminate a possibile threat. There's no telling what else someone might find on the other side of one of those rings. More protomolecule? A different existential threat we accidentally turn on? A superweapon that could make whoever found it unstoppable? And whoever made this stuff is powerful beyond our comprehension; they can bend physics and turn planetoids into space ships, what other kinds of horrors could we find? It's very probable that by this point there are only a handful of people actually in the know as much as Avasarala, who even come close to her level of understanding about the dangers humanity faces.
    But to her, and those who know what she does, every monkey who goes through one of those gates has the ability to press a button on a microwave they don't understand and start something that might destroy the entire human race.
    And that's not even counting what Holden mentioned last season. If the protomolecule race was *that* powerful... What about the things that killed them?

      @StarkRG ปีที่แล้ว

      While it's certainly hard to argue that there isn't a fairly high chance of danger to all of humanity from expanding through the gates, I think banning anyone from going through was extremely short-sighted and only allowing corporate access doubly so. Even if everything was going well in the Solar System at that point, which it wasn't, there are going to be thousands upon thousands of people willing to run that blockade. A better solution would have been to provide assistance and guidance to anyone who wanted to go. Let the people who wanted to go, and send a military contingent to protect them (not as police, but to help with external threats, post them at the gate, if that help is rejected), probably send some scientists too. Isolationism never works out in the long run, it's basically denial as a foreign policy.

      Your sentiment reminded of a dialogue from Schlock Mercenary where they find tech from extremely advanced long lost intergalactic civilisation ,a possible weapon to be exact. They lamented that this is like finding a spent rifle cartridge the size of a planet. It quickly dawned on them that the scariest thing about what they find is that someone had the reasons to build a gun that fired ammunition the size of planets and HAD fired in it at something in the past in self defense, obviously it didn't work and that civilisation was wiped out.
      Another thing it reminds me of was of that graphic novel where astronauts and scientists exploring Europa find an entire city of gigantic aliens in stasis pods under Europa's ice with technologies that make human space program looked like neanderthal . The guy who translated the alien language were rather spooked by his work . One, because he find it too easy to translate thealine language cluing us the aliens are somewhat similar to human in their way of thinking . And secondly , he pointed out the the Inuits have 50 words for snows, indicating snow play important role in the culture. They barely translated a portion of the alien language and already found hundreds of words for "murder". Oh the alien seem to be waking up .

      @MattNolanCustom ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LeeCarlson hmm. Sounds like personal speculation to me rather than anything based on decent evidence. In the books (Abbadon's Gate, chapter 1) the Roci crew are flush with money from side-gigs and are spending some of it on ship upgrades. The keel-mounted railgun is mentioned fairly casually by Alex as a request. No more details other than that it gets implemented. That makes it sound like a run-of-the-mill thing in the books. Just because it is unusual on ships as small as the Anubis, doesn't mean it isn't difficult. In a large Navy you don't need railguns on the small ships. Also, Amos gets some engine upgrades from Callisto, which is a Martian outpost, not Tycho.
      In the TV show, they are nowhere near Tycho at the time the Railgun appears, but it appears at the same time as Avasarla clearing their legal issues over the "legitimate salvage" and asking them to go to Ilus. It would make more sense to me that they had the work done at the Bush Naval Shipyards (in orbit of Earth or Luna, IIRC) where the Protogen stealth ships were made. No need to reverse engineer when you already have the blueprints and Avasarala would be in a position to finance / approve it. And when did Tycho get the chance to reverse engineer the Protogen ships? The only one left as far as we know was shot to bits by the Roci in the assault on Thoth Station and left drifting for a short while before Fred sent the location info to Avasarala. Amos gets the landing gear and other mods for operating in atmosphere done by "a guy he knows on Luna" so that also goes against your call that the Roci only ever has work done on Tycho.
      You're making reasonable guesses, but I think your inference is off.

    So the Roci now has an after-market keel-mounted railgun(That was the moon-destroying cannon you mentioned). The original Martian corvette-class didn't include that as standard equipment but the Roci's crew splurged a little bit, shall we say. ;)
    Also, the planetary-landing system for the Roci is aftermarket as well, including the landing gears and steam-powered descent thrusters. Interestingly, in the books, the Roci is already capable of planetary landings, but she does land on her belly in that version, which means all the walls become floors. Most of the ship's control stations and crash couches are designed to rotate and reorient themselves so they are usable while the ship is horizontal.
    And now this show has moved into a place that is TRULY alien. Ilus is a place that humans probably can't fully understand. And we just recklessly decided to try to live there because it happens to have breathable air and *kind of* drinkable water.

    The planet's name is a bit more complicated than simple elitism. The Belters from Ganymede would be considered an illegal, claim jumping settlement. Calling the planet by the name "Ilus" would be implicitly legitimizing the Belter setllers controversial claim (which is not even really supported the OPA). Admittedly, "New Terra" is an uninspired choice.
    You are being a bit of an anglophile about the name of the planet. The name "Earth" in English comes from English's germanic roots. In romance languages, the name for our planet is a variation on the Latin "Terra", and might be the default choice for a lingua franca name. After all, we are only assuming English remains the language of busniess and transportation in "The Expanse" future.

    And now you guys get to know the sub-genre of this season.
    There is only one best type of frontier story -- and that's a *Western* .
    In fact, the setup for this situation comes from a *particular* Western -- and that Western is "A Fistful of Dollars," the first of Sergio Leone's epic "Dollars" trilogy.
    A small frontier town with two violently feuding factions ready to kill each other at a moment's notice -- or none, at all -- and the Roci crew just walked into it.
    Don't worry, though.
    The authors will remind us, soon enough, that they know a thing or two about science, and what it might be like to try to colonize a new planet.
    A lot of people criticize this season because it marks such a radical shift in tone from the end of the last one.
    But, how could it not? The last season dropped a noval right in the middle of the setting, and changed it fundamentally.
    Now, they kinda have to tell the story about humanity adapting to the new paradigm as they spread out into a vast new frontier.
    As with Season 1, Season 4 must lay the groundwork for the rest of the series -- and it does that beautifully.
