Most "can you beat Pokemon game with just this Pokemon?" playthrough challenges aren't actually possible. Here are the starter Pokemon that can beat their Pokemon games COMPLETELY on their own, thus being capable of a true solo run.

Hate to burst the generation 5 bubble, but it’s kinda impossible to solo starter run black and white. You see after getting cut and dealing with team plasma in the dreamyard. On route 3, there’s a mandatory double battle and they will push you away until you have two Pokémon.
Just like Tate and Liza in gen 3.
Yes, he forgot about that.
Yes and kinda no .... If you check mudkip solo run by Alpharad u are given 2 pokemon in the game, so that can technically be a legit solo run to me since the game force castform to player for bonus and you dont actually catch it or can reject it
@@goddamngundam ??? they were talking about gen 5, black and white, theres no legitimate mudkip there, and I'm pretty sure it's called SOLO run for a reason, even if you were forced to take a mon you still have to box it in a solo run because that's what solo means.

Also same for Sword and Shield for the 7th and 8th gym.
Fun fact: In X/Y you can actually skip the "mandatory" Kanto starters. Just have a full party and when asked to send one of them in the box to make room for the starter just press B. You"ll still get the mega stone for it. Granted it cant work for a solo run but it's still possible to not obtain a Kanto starter in the game. I found that out doing a nuzlock and not wanting 2 starters since that would make the run far too easy in what might already just be the easiest pkmn game to nuzlock.

Several comments are mentioning that the Hoenn games force you to have a second Pokemon to face Tate & Liza, something I admittedly forgot about when making this video (oops). If you think that disqualifies Swampert, then that's fine. However I personally think Swampert should still get credit, because the games force the gift Castform onto you (hail yeah). You can then:
1. Not level Castform up at all
2. Bring it into the battle alongside your starter
3. IMMEDIATELY KO the Castform Turn 1
By using your starter to KO the Castform, you avoid cheating the battle by causing one of T&L's Pokemon to use an attack on the Castform instead of Swampert. It actually makes the battle a bit tougher since you have to waste your first turn. So while you technically are bringing the Castform into battle, you're not USING it in battle; its only use is being allowed to fight T&L. That's just my interpretation though. Again, I'm sorry I forgot to mention this in the video itself.
EDIT: UGH AND RAIHAN WHY DID I MISS THIS. You can do the same thing in Sword and Shield but with the gift Toxel instead of Castform. There we go NOW I SHOULD HAVE COVERED EVERYTHING

In BDSP you call for help from Pokémon with your Pokétch. Certain ones can be used when facing the obstacle that can be removed, like Rock Smash, but others like Defog you have to manually activate in the watch.
In Legends Arceus you have Wyrdeer, Ursaluna, Basculegion, Sneasler and Braviary. With the exception of Wyrdeer, all of them played a part in progressing the story, especially Basculegion and Braviary.
In Scarlet and Violet you have Koraidon and Miraidon, but completing their upgrades (recovery) with Arven is necessary to access Area Zero and "The Way Home" story line, along with beating the league and Team Star.
You actually need Fly in order to complete X/Y (since you can't access Geosenge Town on foot while it's under Team Flare's control). In reality, only Feraligator in HG/SS meets the requirement. As earlier comments mention, you can't exactly solo in the other Gen 3-6 games.

Sorry to burst your bubble but how do you even cut the tree blocking Rock Tunnel? The Squirtle line cannot learn Cut.
My first play of pokemon blue I powered up Charmeleon enough to beat the rock and water gyms. I laughed at myself when I realised I could use a butterfree for those 2
butterfree is weak to rock
As soon as I saw the title, my first thought was Swampert

Technically, the games that succeeded have a mandatory battle that requires more than one Pokemon:
1. All Hoenn games require you to do a Double Battle against Tate and Liza (you are required to get Castform during the story though).
2. For Black and White, you are required to do a Double Battle against two Team Plasma Grunts in Route 3 (you can get the Pansage, Pansear or Panpour from the girl at the Dreamyard).
3. For Black 2 and White 2, you are required to do a triple battle against Charles before you can progress to Driftveil City (you must get two more Pokemon).
12:00 well yeah okay, but reds pikachus gonna be tough tho xD i guess you could get past it with a quick claw earthquake or something, not easy, but should be possible.
Actually you can’t solo let’s go because some gyms have requirements like have a grass type or catch 50 Pokémon
Well I mean, if you don't use that Pokemon in battle, It should count as a solo anyways.
So you can catch thouse 50 pokemon and catch a grass type but if you not use It, It's ok.
@@Leon_LF By the terms of this video you can't. This video counts having another pokemon EVER as not a solo.
@@anexistingperson8540 Not exactly because you are forced to choose a Kanto starter in X/Y, which would make it so that X/Y is impossible to do a solo run of. However, Michael still said that you can solo run the game with Greninja by his standards.
@@Gyarados422 Forced gifts=/= catching willingly pokemon.

Platinum was way easier with just an overleveled Infernape
I-i-i... ITS YOU!
its like this guy watches everything
Infernate
0:25 i did this with the original blue game on accident, i didn't know how to switch pokemon in my party outside of battle, and i was told that any pokemon would start disobeying you after the relelvent level until you got the required badge, so i didn't rediculously over level my blastoise through most of it
That's why mudkip and his evolution boiz are my favorites 🥰
same
Technically the Mudkip line cannot solo Ruby or Sapphire because when you try to fight Tate and Liza, you won't be able to unless you have a second pokemon. The reason for this is the fact that Tate and Liza are the double battle gym leaders, and will refuse to fight you unless you have at least two pokemon. Therefore, you are unable to truly beat Ruby/Sapphire with only Mudkip.
God, that felt like I was writing a school assignment.
You just have another Pokémon let it faint then beat it with Mudkip. As long as the other Pokémon doesn’t attack it workds
Go watch alpharad then come back
@@whitegriffin3772 And Alpharad also had to bring a 2nd Pokémon. A true Solo-run is simply not possible in those games.
Plus you get a castform, and you can't skip that so even if you don't use it to fight it's not a solo run
Usually they get a low level to enter battle and let it die immediately
"greetings cookie fans Michael here" the intro captions never fail to amaze me

i remember my first pokémon game (soulsilver) i used my starters exclusively. i had no idea about pokémon typing, what’s effective ect ect. i caught other pokémon but my starters were a much higher level at all times during my playthroughs
I love that he's more annoyed that Blastoise can't learn Cut than he is that Feraligatr can't learn Waterfall.

Just use cast from because you can't release it and just use it to battle Tate & Liza and plus it would literally just get OHKO by One of their pokemon and you can't reject castform so you can beat it.

"Can you solo pokemon games with only the starter"
Double battle gym: *WHEEZE*
You get a cast form in gen 3 which makes it so you can do the double battle, you don’t even have to use it but it makes the run possible
Henry Knippling except it's a gift Pokemon, and in a TRUE solo run you'd box it as soon as possible. That's makes the run impossible
Also, in Black and White it is mandatory to catch Reshiram or Zekrom and you have no choice but to use it in the N battle immediately after that, making this also impossible to truly solo.
Luke Ario you’re forced to catch it but you don’t have to add it to your party; the game just gives you the option
@@friendgray1 I believe it gives you the option, but only if you have a full party, which you would not in a true solo run.
Your topics are very amazing
When I was young, I caught every kind of Pokémon and filled out my party with only the strongest guys I caught while my starter was 20-30 levels higher than any of my other Pokémon. Now I use a full team of 6 and try to use different Pokémon each playthrough but I don't worry about the Pokédex anymore. I did a complete 180
You can't beat black and white with one starter actually, I was just trying this and at the preschool the double battle kids won't let you pass without having two Pokemon
I did this too
The main reason the Sinnoh remakes are so far missing is possibly due to how they would do victory road without hms.

I don't think that swampert can truly finish the game by himself because of Tate and Liza so you need a second Pokémon
jc 24 funny thing about that. Technically you don’t have to catch any other Pokémon. You’re given a castform(bless his soul) while playing through the story. So just place it on your team, have it use a useless self buffing move until it dies
Matthew Fitzpatrick still not technically a solo run. You have two Pokémon.
@@NeoDoomBot still counts
Trent no you box gift pokemon
@@trent800 @14:05 Michael says that he assumes any gifted pokemon the player receives are put into the PC. So you cant use Castform. Then you're stuck at Liza and Tate with only 1 pokemon. You use castform, that's 2 pokemon.
In Gen 7, you're forced to do a Double Battle to get into Team Skull's hideout.
