It's not a Batman interrogation without Batman yelling and wanting to beat the crap out of the other guy
WHERE ARE THEY?!
WHERE IS SHE??!!
@Kyan yep, that's Batman for ya, that's what makes him a perfect anti-hero in a movie like this
>>The Batman: WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?!
*WHERE ARE THEY?!!*
Proof that you don't need the joker to make a good batman film
Facts. I’m so tired of the joker. Gotta give other villains a chance.
@@timothygumenik726 yes but no, I can't get enough of GOOD jokers
@@CrustaceanAllergyEnjoyer Luckily for us Joker fans. Barry Keoghan's portrayal looks VERY promising!
I had enough of the Joker, I want to see Mr. Freeze, Poison Ivy, or some Unpopular Batman Villains but this version gave The Riddler a chance. I love it.
@@slytherinmember1009 yes, but I still won't be sad if good joker appears
Despite the differences between the riddler here and his comic book counterpart, it’s not really him unless he’s shown to have a fragile ego while being prone to emotional breakdowns anytime he’s proven wrong. Paul dano nailed this perfectly in this scene.
Wow amazing analysis, you're on point. You know Riddler very well.
So true
I, like many people, was so used to how the villain with the plan had a calm personality and even if he fails he's not breaking down.. this reminded me that he's eventually a sick person first and foremost. So he would most likely react that way if proven wrong or failed
i didnt even think of that he the perfect riddler
Sure this portrayal in particular is a bit different than what we're used to but I think the spirit/core of the Riddler's character is still very much intact. A man who may come off at first like a calculating, intelligent menace who's two steps ahead, but is revealed to be a pathetic, demented loser behind all the puzzles and theatrics once you peel back the question mark-christened curtain.
No, this is the Riddler
It may be obvious, but the fact that Paul Dano looks so normal is the scariest thing about him.
He doesn't look normal
He looks like a creep. Maybe that's why they cast him.
For real. He looks harmless, but is terrifyingly intelligent
I always say that he looks like a non-succesful Bill Gates.
And that is the point. He looks very unaparent. The atmosphere makes us feel earie, but that guy may have as well just sold you a hot dog earlier today. It is only when you interact with him that something is... Off.
Love it.
He looks and acts like an unstable dork
For those who believe that Riddler knows Batman's Identity. You have to take in both Bruce Wayne and his background. Bruce being batman would mean that Riddler was beaten by a "Rich Jackass" who had life handed to him on a golden platter. He "Can't" believe that Bruce Wayne is Batman. It would shatter what little mental stability he has.
That’s a pretty good point
He left Bruce Wayne a note “see u in hell” and mentions it during his meeting Batman. He knows his secret identity
@@user-es9gz8kx3f the "See you in hell" note was in an envelope for The Batman, like with the other murders before
@@user-es9gz8kx3f Listen closely to what he says and it should all make sense.
"I know the real you" -> "All anyone wants to do is unmask you but they're missing the point. You and I both know Im looking at the real you right now".
The "real him" is the mask, like how Riddler feels about his own mask.
"He's the only one we didnt get" + "we've been doing this together" = he believes they are partners working together on these murders. He believes they are "secret friends" so why would he send a bomb to kill his secret friend? He idolizes Batman until he calls Riddler a psycopath and the delusion snaps.
I was confused at first, but yeah. He's still the Riddler and he doesn't believe a guy like Bruce Wayne would be anything more than a rich brat living it up from his dead parents money.
Paul Dano was such perfect casting. He captures almost every angle of the character from his theatrics, intelligence and pure arrogance whilst giving him a darker edge that's perfect for a more modern Riddler.
That’s what I’m saying
No this Riddler was TRASH
@@JaevhonDouglasexplain
@@andrekim9862 because he’s more a serial killer, then the cane wielding, question mark suited, and over ego Riddler that we grew up with.
Sure he’s crazy and psychotic in this version, but what was missing was his great riddler gadgets, riddle puzzles, and special tactics to his endgame. That’s what makes this riddler lacking.
@@greenlightcomics7602 that is true but I don't see how that's a bad thing. I grew up with that riddler too and I loved this riddler. And even then this one still has a lot of ego.
Anyone who thinks that Riddler is overacting here has never read a comic featuring The Riddler. Majority of Batman stories involving Riddler have Riddler thinking he's smarter than Batman only to always be thwarted, the idea that he isn't the smartest man in the room compared to Batman eats him up from the inside and that's exactly what this scene demonstrates.
Yeah that was also how the Riddler was portrayed in the Arkham Games, he's always trying to be the intellectual superior to both Batman and the other criminals. You get to see some of that in Arkham City with his interview logs with Hugo Strange.
Very well said! 👍 💯
I think this was somewhat a subversion of that as it seems Riddler is smarter than Batman rn but that the Riddler was delusional about their dynamic. When he comes back in the future and Batman has grown and Riddler knows where they stand(except he thinks he is smarter than Batman) it’ll play out that way. At least that’s how I see it
Yup, that’s why he had a breakdown till he realised batman never worked it all out. Then he felt more in control hence the singing
Batman always won bit at a cost... one of the things that made angry at riddler he always hurt somebody even if batman won overall.
I love how Batman calls him crazy just to hurt his feelings and then finds out he's actually crazy.
Makes you wonder, why was he put into Arkham in the first place? What about his crimes marked him as clinically insane, as opposed to just a serial killer with a taste for theatrics?
The line between genius and insanity...
Love this. Rather than it being a simple interrogation, it’s like a mirror to Bruce realizing what his actions have inspired. They made Riddler like a Moriarty figure and that’s exactly how he should be done in a modern context.
This isn't Batman having a heart-to-heart with one of his villains, this is him in front of the severely unwanted, worst-case scenario fruits of his labor.
Only riddler nor Joker is his Moriarty in this series. However we have been... referred to him
Thomas Elliot
i love the comparison with the riddler and moriarty.
@@juno_the8774 This version is too. The other plot twist in this scene is that Riddler's plot is not done yet, but Batman never knew it until now.

@@TheBatman39 Probably because even though he flooded Gotham, he wanted people to die, but batman saved them, and he liked batman better as a symbol of vengeance than a symbol oh hope, who saves people.
Riddler realizing he fucked up and the following meltdown is very satisfying.
Riddler through and through. Excellent performance.
Not to mention how he instantly regains his composure and arrogance as soon as he realizes Batman hasn't figured out the riddle after all, and he wastes no time immediately rubbing Batman's face in his "superior intellect".
He didn't realize he had fucked up, he realized Batman is not that ideal partner in crime he could've been for him.
Actually, I think it's even more nuanced than that! I think Riddler KNEW that Batman wouldn't figure it out, and he's pretending freaking out here to give batman the satisfaction of winning, before the big reveal that the plan is much bigger than he could have guessed. The subtleties of that are SO good!

@@pandogstudios1512 The only thing Batman protected in this film was the corrupt system from Riddler's plans
I really love how subtle the whole conversation went from Batman thinking that the Riddler knows his identity to realizing he just misunderstood the way the Riddler speak. The body language from Batman spoke volume. It was this self-distraction that lead Batman to overlooking one of Riddler’s last clue, leading to the bombing.
"im looking at the real you right now"
Him being able to nail this role with the creepy singing AND 8 years prior nail the singing in Love and Mercy is why he's one of my favorite actors.
The dialogue between these two...such perfect representations of their characters.
Batman wants to make Riddler understand how pathetic he really is.
Batman - "You're a pathetic psychopath, begging for attention. You're going to die alone in Arkham; a nobody."
And Riddler shows Batman he really hasn't figured it out yet.
Riddler - "Oh, you're really not as smart as I thought you were. I guess I gave you too much credit."
Superb writing from Matt Reeves!
Patterson’s eyes tho. He’s good at showing his emotion. Especially when he started hitting the glass.
When he starts singing Ave Maria, I couldn't help but think of Professor Pyg on GOTHAM who played the same song on record player and killed an inmate at Arkham.
I love the way Riddler’s glasses keep reflecting that single bar of fluorescent light on the ceiling in place of his eyes when he retreats from Batman. As if to say there is no longer any genuine humanity within him. His physical appearance of a harmless frail nobody a facade for the cunning monster that lies within, detached and soulless.

It is kind of funny to think of the random events that had to happen for Batman to move forward. The one cop that always gave Batman shit and called him a freak, was the one cop on duty at the crime scene, and was also the only person in the movie that knew what a "tucker" was used for. If it wasn't for Martinez, Batman would have had no clue where to go after this scene.
It's cause Bruce Wayne is born into wealth, he has difficulty understanding common people's tools. From the Riddler's deduction he thought Batman works for a utilities company or construction/engineer and fed up with the unfairness of the world like he is.

I think Riddler undersells himself when he says he isn't physical. I mean, he single-handedly eliminated several of Gotham's most powerful people.
Sure, he might not have the muscles of Bane, but strength means nothing when the other guy is holding a weapon.
True that, he could probably kill Gordon or Selina
Not really, as he relied on the element of surprise and mostly hid in the background when he killed the mayor and Colson, as opposed to Batman, who physically defeated his henchmen and prevented them from killing the people forced away, which was Riddler’s end goal. Honestly rewatching this movie a couple times just solidifies how disturbing this Riddler and how gritty this Batman is. Perfection.
I noticed that when I rewatched the film a couple times as well. I think the best way to describe this Batman, Riddler, and overall feel of Gotham and possibilities would be: Raw. Everything isn’t “perfected” but it has a distinct style that leaves the door open for endless stories in this Batman world. Matt Reeves’s wisely started the story in the early days but imagine his Batman(Robert Pattinson) in his later years with the mobsters & lunatics fully realized… The Batman skyrocketed into being one of the best Batman content.
Classic Riddler. Throwing a screaming tantrum when it turns out he's not holding all the cards, and he has all the clues, but won't figure out who's under the cowl because he's already decided what kind of men Bruce Wayne and Batman are.
In my opinion, this was a great example of mental illness. Even though Paul dano is screaming and streaming he’s still terrifying
The glasses were a genius way to characterize Edward here. The glasses are clear, symbolizing that everyone sees right through him - he's been invisible his whole life.
