Grace Slick was the soul of Jefferson Airplane. By the bye, living in San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury in the Summer of Love (1967), I had the privilege of hearing Grace Slick and Janis Joplin doing an impromptu duet in Golden Gate Park. Incredible! And neither of them needed an amplifier. I think the song was “Mustang Sally”. What a day! 🤗

Grace Slick has such a powerful voice & some serious vibrato. Jefferson Airplane really rocked out at Woodstock even though Grace was drunk off her face. Lmao! The group name changes were due to changes in the band line~up & who owned the name. They went from Jefferson Airplane to Jefferson Starship to Starship. I cracked up when you said you were excited to continue *going down the rabbit hole* of them. Hee hee hee.
In between Airplane and Starship there was an album by Paul Kantner and Jefferson Starship called “Blows Against the Empire”, about the hijacking of a starship. They started going by just Starship after two members split.

Grace Slick has amazing vibrato. You are right that there are few singers with that style. Her overall voice was never big, she doesn't have a huge range like some BIG singers, but she has style for miles.

This band had another great lead singer in Marty Balin. I would recommend checking out "Miracles" and "Count On Me" - both of which were released after the band changed its name to Jefferson Starship.
A must for you to hear for your baby playlist would have to be… “Pooh Corner” by Kenny Logins… What a smooth voice this man has.. you will LOVE him.. and the song…

Anything from early Loggins and Messina. Golden Ribbons. Another Road. On Stage is a live album and so incredibly full of beautiful music that a human can hardly stand it. Something for everyone. I HIGHLY recommend.
In the late 60's there were many San Francisco groups about to break huge. Two of the more popular were The Great Society and Jefferson Airplane. Signe Anderson and Marty Balin were the leads for Airplane. Signe was pregnant and left the group to raise her family after their first album. The Great Society was led by brothers Jerry and Dewey Slick and Jerry's wife Grace. Jerry and Grace were breaking up and the band was falling apart. Dewey wrote Somebody to Love and Grace wrote White Rabbit which had a much more middle eastern sound. Paul Kantner asked Grace to join Airplane and she brought those two songs with her, and Airplane became huge.
Like that "Hippie Vibe"? Here's another: "Aquarius/Let the Sun Shine In" - The 5th Dimension According to Wikipedia, the song is listed at number 66 on Billboard's "Greatest Songs of All Time".
There was a time back in the day when she wasn't showing up for concerts, I bought tickets to a show in Cleveland and everyone was waiting to see if she would come out. When she hit the stage everyone went crazy
In the late '70's I worked at Disney World in Tomorrowland. Jefferson Starship was on the terrace stage every night for almost a month and as we all hung out in the break room and tunnel between/before shows, I got to know the band pretty well. Ahhhhh - nothing like being gorgeous and 17. Memories.
When I was a kid, I had this obsession with the Monkees. Awesome band. Early days they were Jefferson airplane then they were Jefferson starship and then just starship as they progressed but you can't beat the early Rock. Speaking of early Rock can you react to Edgar and Johnny Winters version of tobacco road live from 1970 you'll get shook it's got everything you like in it both of you
That would be a double reaction if you got Jay to watch the movie "Mannequin" and the title song from this movie by Starship "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now". I miss the innocence from the 80's and earlier generations.
Actually, the band was different for each name change. The name change probably involved who legally owned the name. I'd expect that Kaukonen (guitar) and Cassidy (Bass) had a share of the ownership as the name chnged when they left the band and then again when Balin (vocals) and the Dryan (drums) left, eventualy leaving only Kanter (vocals and rythm guitar), who died in 2016, from the original band ( Slick was in and out of the band). Kaukonen and Cassdiy formed the band Hot Tuna (still performing). Balin went solo (died in 2018). Dryen died in 2005). My favorite Airplane album is After Bathing at Baxters. It probably has the best songs as a complete album with no fillers.
I lived in San Francisco in the 60's They played for free in Golden Gate park every Sunday along with Janice, The Grateful Dead, Jimi Hendrix, and a bunch of other bands. We had no idea how lucky we were. Love you guys, Paul

To me Grace is one of the greatest singers ever and this iconic song is one of the best The late 60s was maybe my favorite time for music. New sounds, psychedelic and such.
If you want to see them live, Jefferson Airplane at Woodstock if you won't get blocked. They got on stage at 8am, when everyone was up all night. Yes, this was the Hippie band
I saw Jefferson Airplane twice in concert - in 1969 and 1970. I also sang this song as the lead singer in my college band around the same time. They were great in person.
There's one really big genre that you guys haven't ever checked out, it was called bubblegum pop, and I loved it when I was a kid! Green Tambourine by the lemon pipers Sugar Sugar by The Archies I'm a Believer by The Monkees Heartbeat it's a lovebeat by the DeFranco family
The "wobbling" in the voice is called vibrato. It's more common in classical music but does also happen with really good pop singers, like the wonderful Grace Slick.
Grace Slick has one of my favorite voices of all time. Before getting into the hippie scene in San Fran she was a classically trained singer. It shows. I feel like most rock singers are talented amateurs as best, so it really stands out when a group hires a professional singer.
I was fortunate enough to see them as Jefferson Starship in 1982/83 at my local fairgrounds. The crowd went crazy when they played those two all-time classics, "Somebody To Love" and "White Rabbit"! Great show!!!
JA had two super vocalists, Grace Slick and Marty Balin. You kids should try their love songs 'Today', and 'Comin' back to me' from this same album. Classic, romantic, and soulful LOVE songs, the BEST EVER!!
Loved this first time I heard in 67, still do! Grace is one of the greatest singers ever in music history for me. They had a few good songs as Starship, worth checking out.
Grace is a legend of legends and this was one of their biggest hits as The Airplane. They were never the same after Cassidy and Kaukonen left to start Hot Tuna! Still did have some great tunes as Jefferson StRship!
If you like that hippie vibe, you gotta try “Woodstock” by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. Or “Marrakech Express.” Wonderful hippie music, and just great all around songs!
@@sundayze It definitely is a total hippie song, written by "Papa" John Philipps . Unfortunately it's the only song by Scott McKenzie you can hear on the radio. In order to do him justice, react to "Celeste" - written by Donovan, another hippie generation protagonist -, "Like an oldtime movie" or "What's the difference (Chapter II)". By the way: You could also react to "Sunshine Superman", "Hurdy Gurdy Man", "Season of the witch", "Lalena" or "Atlantis" by Donovan - perfect hippie songs. 🙂
You should listen to Woodstock, it was written by Joni Mitchell and give to Graham Nash who was her boyfriend at the time. Joni couldn’t make it to Woodstock due to schedule conflicts.
@@gordstart1773 ...and, all these years later, Joni became a jazz musician, playing with Jaco Pastorius, Michael Brecker, Vinny Colaiuta, and Pat Metheny. Her tribute album to Mingus was awesome. Check out, "The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines."
Grace also has a wicked sense of humor. Some of the songs where her vocals dominate are in 1)Two Heads, 2)Rejoyce, 3) Easter, 4) Silver Spoon. She also has 4 solo albums.
The name was changed to Starship when Mickey Thompson was added to the group, who was born and raised in Cairo, GA. 30 miles from me. He is a BOSS vocalist too, and they sounded really good together. Thompson also sang Fooled Around And Fell In Love with Elvin Bishop.
Also Jorma Kaukonen (guitars) and Jack Casady (bass) had spun off completely as the ever delightful rock - blues band Hot Tuna (!l) I saw them 5 times and those guys can play. I think they were happier in those mid-sized venues grinding out their sound then the big arena sound the airplane - starship part was heading towards. Check out their acoustic live album recorded in 1969, "Hot Tuna," (the breaking glass album.)
it's hard to convey how 'big' this song was when it came out - we listened to it and the entire album constantly - Jack Cassidy's incredible playing brought the bass into the forefront.
Another Hippie-vibe group you might enjoy is It's A Beautiful Day. Their signature song is "White Bird" but I would also recommend "Time Is", "Girl With No Eyes", Wasted Union Blues" and the instrumental "Bombay Calling" - which inspired Deep Purples song "Sweet Child In Time".
They didn’t have much else until the late 70s through the mid 80s when these songs came out: Layin it on the line No Way Out Be My Lady Can’t Find love Jane Find Your Way Back Stranger
1967--what a year for music! Too much to list here. For me, there were two songs that defined the era: this one and "Sunshine of Your Love." Glad I still have my 1970's stereo system and vinyl collection. Grand-daughter may appreciated it one day.
"Miracles" is sung by a man, Marty Balin, but Grace Slick is singing in the background. If you react to that, make sure it is the long version. You want trippy, you got it. Amber, if you want trippy, hippie vibes (I always ask for this one), you will very much love Moody Blues "Legend of a Mind". Find a version where they are young. Hahahehe. From 1968. Song will transcend you. Amazing flute solo in the middle out of nowhere.
Jorma Kaukonen, the lead guitarist one this album and lead guitarest for "Jefferson Airplane" and my band, "Odysseus," played a concert together in Gold Gate Park (San Francisco) in the late 70's early '80s. Jorma was playing with "Hot Tuna" at that time. Great show! Lot of fun!

My friend and I adopted puppies from the same litter. She named her's Slick first. The only thing I could think to name mine after that was Grace.
Grace joked saying it was a good thing she married Jerry Slick cause to be Grace Wing of the Jefferson Airplane would have been way too cute.
Too bad she drifted into the humanity hating PETA crowd. Sad.

Darby Slick not Dewey....LOL.
She came back in the 80's with Jefferson Starship, We Built This City. And yes she and the group are very iconic in that period of music history.
By that time they had dropped "Jefferson" and were just Starship.

The late 60s was maybe my favorite time for music. New sounds, psychedelic and such.
One of my favorite songs ever. Grace Slick's voice is awesome, powerful, and as you say "out of this world! White Rabbit is about a drug trip.
If you want to see them live, Jefferson Airplane at Woodstock if you won't get blocked. They got on stage at 8am, when everyone was up all night. Yes, this was the Hippie band
"You've seen all the "heavy" bands , now get ready for morning maniac music ." ~ Grace Slick , Aug 17 1969
Her voice is unique unto itself
There is a movie "Go ask Alice" that relates to the song.
I saw Jefferson Airplane twice in concert - in 1969 and 1970. I also sang this song as the lead singer in my college band around the same time. They were great in person.
There's one really big genre that you guys haven't ever checked out, it was called bubblegum pop, and I loved it when I was a kid!
Green Tambourine by the lemon pipers Sugar Sugar by The Archies
I'm a Believer by The Monkees
Heartbeat it's a lovebeat by the DeFranco family
anything by the Ohio Express
I wouldn't call the Monkees bubblegum, listen to Cuddly Toy, its about a Hell's Angels gangbang lol definitely not bubblegum
Good memories Today, and Coming back to me, are truly touching tunes… hooked me as a teen… an’ it don’t stop…⚔️🙏🏽⚔️
Your reaction to this song is really amazing watching you enjoy this song is my favorite
Should have done a live version. I love seeing Grace sing.
I just love that you two are enjoying the music I grew up with because it IS fabulous music.
Or Scott mckenzie’s “if you’re going to San Francisco”. Total hippie song royalty.
When we are talking about CSNY, what about "Wooden ships", "Our house" or "Teach your children"?
I remember when this first came out, it's awesome to see someone else experience it for the first time
Grace also has a wicked sense of humor. Some of the songs where her vocals dominate are in 1)Two Heads, 2)Rejoyce, 3) Easter, 4) Silver Spoon. She also has 4 solo albums.
I had their fantastic poster of a gigantic wooden airplane on my bedroom wall all through high school !! It was awesome!
THE CABLE GUY LOL
In the 70’s they had a beautiful ballad You Can Count on Me
The name was changed to Starship when Mickey Thompson was added to the group, who was born and raised in Cairo, GA. 30 miles from me. He is a BOSS vocalist too, and they sounded really good together. Thompson also sang Fooled Around And Fell In Love with Elvin Bishop.
Didn't know that and i've lived in Cairo around the last 15 years.
I was saying a big rock band was going to snatch him up when Fooled Around came out. His voice was undeniable.
That would be Mickey Thomas, not Thompson 😉
Yeh! Happy to see you! Happy you chose this video! One of my favorites for years!
it's hard to convey how 'big' this song was when it came out - we listened to it and the entire album constantly - Jack Cassidy's incredible playing brought the bass into the forefront.
You guys are old souls blessed to have each other continue this journey thank you
Jack Casady kicking serious ass on bass, along with Jorma Kaukonen on guitar.
The best way I could describe here voice is operatic, haunting, beautiful.
Yes saw them at Jormas Fur Peace ranch in Southern Ohio about 3 years ago. Still sounding the same !
I second that! They were folky, proggy, and underappreciated.
One of those songs that will go round and round in your head all day.
Classic Rocker Chick. Maybe even the 1st. Grace Slick could BLOW!
You guys nailed it. Her vibrato was fabulous and flawless.
Grace Slick is the Goddess of rock & roll.
ABSOLUTE MUST HEARS,, JEFFERSON STARSHIP "MIRACLES",, "WITH YOUR LOVE" & "RUNAWAY"
Your so right Marty Balin was a incredible Singer And Songwriter! Also St Charles should be added to your list!
@@kona883 And "Ride The Tiger"
They didn’t have much else until the late 70s through the mid 80s when these songs came out:
Layin it on the line
No Way Out
Be My Lady
Can’t Find love
Jane
Find Your Way Back
Stranger
you skipped over the mid 70's when they had Miracles, With Your Love, Runaway, Count On Me
Winds of Change was good too.
Yeah I’m not as big a fan of the Balin-era JS - too soft and wimpy.
Great show! Lot of fun!
Luca Bedtime Playlist:
The Night (aka Nights in White Satin) by The Moody Blues, LIVE with The London Festival Orchestra. The Moody Blues is widely considered as one of the early examples of Progressive Rock.

Yes! YES! Nights in White Satin with the poetry part. You won't regret it.

Yup, this link is the Full Version. 😉😁
👍👍🎯
Moody blues were great. I loved their sound!
Any Moody Blues…utterly beautiful and Justin Hayward (lead singer) has a great voice
Grace Slick's voice was icy and cool Janis Joplin's voice was sultry and Flame Lydia Pense's voice was smoky and textured soul. Was so fortunate to see all three with their bands through the 60's and 70's....Aloha
