  • Tool-assisted speedrun (TAS) of Super Sprint Arcade (50 tracks) (140,780) (1 player)
    Goal: Get all the upgrades
    Notes:
-The position of the wrench is decided when you cross the start/finish line for the second time.
-On track 6, 3rd loop the wrench was appearing in the racing line of other cars, so I changed the way my car crossed the line (12:57) and that was enough to change the rng.
-I did this again at 15:42 just changing the angle slightly that I cross the line was enough to change where the monkey wrench appeared.
-In this TAS, the order I got the upgrades was: 1 Traction, 2 Speeds, 4 tractions, 3 Speeds, 5 Accelerates
-For the TAS, what slows it down the most is having to brake in most corners, which is why I chose to get all the traction upgrades early.
-I wouldn't do that in real life because on some tracks, the other cars are faster than you and you can't make mistakes. Look at 14:20 to see how little distance there is between the player and the other cars.
-Note that the TAS has a big advantage when there are a lot of corners on a track because it negotiates corners better than computer cars, which may not be the case for a human player.
    - But finally, after all the upgrades, the TAS is much faster than computer cars.
-He was so fast that he had time to hit all 4 cones, a tornado and an oil slick on the first lap at 29:40 and stay in front.
-For fun at 14:56 I jumped off the bridge to get the wrench.
-At 17:45 I tried to finish at the same time as another car.
-I had to accelerate, the collision was not enough to push me over the line.
-It's funny to see that in the end the green car is ahead of the blue car but he didn't win the race. 😀
-At 24:22 you can see that the collisions with the orange cones are not very precise. On the next lap, I was almost in the same position but the collision with the cone was detected. (24:28)
-Other examples at 24:47 and 26:12.
-At 29:57 I exploded probably because I got a bit too far outside the bridge.
-I was a bit disappointed that the 'increase score' only gives 500 points to each wrench which isn't a lot. It's not a very good choice to get a higher score since 1500 pts is less than doing 1 single track (more than 2200 pts).

    ===Description===
Super Sprint (known as Sprint Master on the Atari 2600)[1] is a racing video game released by Atari Games and Midway Games in 1986. Up to three players drive Formula One-like cars on a circuit that is viewed from above.[2] The game is a successor to Gran Trak 10 and the Sprint series, which were black-and-white games from the 1970s. A sequel, Championship Sprint, was released later in the same year.

Too bad, for the 2600 OR 7800, it could've been compatible with driving controllers like Indy 500 (Race).

Words cannot express my adoration for that reverberating trumpet flourish that plays when you pick up a wrench. It's such a beautifully uncanny sound. They could've just used a "ding!" or something similar... but no! They dared to go a little weird.

Considering that it is TAS, I would like to praise the video for its wonderful content. At the time, I was a high school student in rural Japan, and I remember playing the game over 100 times and only reaching the 9th round once. It was an easy setting where can power up by acquiring two spanners, and my score was just over 16,000 points. After a lot of intense concentration, the 8th song, the interval music, was unforgettable (all the songs in this game are great). In the spring of 2024, 38 years later, I met again and played at an GE-SEN(arcade) in Akihabara, Tokyo. As a result, the game was over in the third round. Now, I'm nowhere near as good as I was back then, and my hair is gray, but I remember the excitement of those days like it was yesterday. With love to Atari from Japan.

I have seen a car with all the upgrades and gotten the “Increase Score” item. Now my curiosity is finally fulfilled.

I'm hoping to stream this game one day and prove that there is no Super Speedway after Race 85 despite what Wikipedia says.

Man... I never thought I'd be saying this about a TAS, especially one of yours, but this is *really* damn hard to get through.
Super Sprint came from Atari's "post-vintage" period (the crash to around 1990), where it seemed like every other game seem designed to make you to want to stop playing it. I'll just give a list: Powerups grossly underpowered, tires have the traction of hot butter, virtually impossible to take sensible lines, too-perfect AI, aggravating nonsense like jumps, obstructed sections, and randomly opening gates, and of course you're constantly slamming into walls and hitting obstacles and crashing. The most I'd ever seen anyone make it was 1 top speed, 1 acceleration. I wasn't even aware that it looped; it just seemed to more random crap at us until we had enough, which rarely took long.
Old game videos are great glimpse into the past, but sometimes their greatest benefit is showing us why they belong in the past. Anyway, thanks for showing us what we were missing. As soon as I actually reach the end of this, I'm sure I'll appreciate it. 🙂
