As a 20 year old man, one of the most embarrassing moments of my life was when my family saw the mattress I used for my entire teenage years, just covered in the grossest stains. I was never taught to clean my mattress, or hardly ever even change my sheets.
I'm now watching all your videos to make sure my own place is as clean and fresh as possible!

Never too late to learn or start
My Mother taught me to always cover the mattress with a wool blanket (not man-made fibre) as this is absorbent, cover the blanket with a thick sheet, then your regular bedding on top. It really keeps the mattress clean.

That’s just too much cover. You actually stop benefiting from the "technology" of your mattress because a tick layer of covers separate your body from the mattress. Better to just stick to the mattress protector advice given in the video.

baking soda and marijuana are uncommonly useful for countless occasions.
Had our mattress for 18 years, and it still looks like new! We use covers, a foam mattress on top of the main one (which gets changed every 2 years) and hoover the mattress at least once a month. Good tips and advice.

I use a mattress cover. It was required while purchasing our mattress to keep the warranty valid. I swear by them. Our mattress looks brand new. And this is saying A LOT! 👍🏼 thanks for the tips. I use some of them already, but enjoyed the video. Keep them coming.

After my cat peed in my bed and totally ruined the mattress, the guy at the store recommended buying a mattress protector when I went to buy a new mattress. It cost about $150 but it was really worth it. My cat has been sick, and sure enough she peed again. The protector took a hit, but the mattress was totally fine and didn't have any stains or odors. Tossed the protector in the sanitize cycle and it was ready to get back to work.

All my mattresses are incased in a mattress cover, that is waterproof. It also protects against bedbugs.

Suggestion honey, to keep you from alot of work. At the mattress stores, you can buy a waterproof mattress cover. I bought this because my cat has a tendency to puke almost anywhere including on the bed. Basically, this means that the bottom side of the mattress cover is waterproof, while the top side feels like the mattress. It's about a quarter of an inch thick and can be washed in the washer, and yes dried in the drier (on the low heat tumble dry settings). The cover cost me $80 but is well worth it. And it will save you the hour or more work you just put into that mattress. Just wash it in the washer every month or two.
I do this too and I also use pillowcase covers that I wash and interchange regularly. It's easier than trying to clean a mattress and pillows. I get the pillowcase covers from target at AU $10 a piece.
Sometimes I take my mattress out tonairnout in the sun for an hour or so on hot day. Believe it or not it kills bed bugs and odors..

I use 2 mattress protectors, the one that came with the mattress and a thicker one to cover as well. I also rotate my mattress 1 x month..and it's about 3-4 years old now and the is mattress is going strong.

I think when we bought our bed, it came with a mattress protector but, it's pretty thick and fluffy. I forgot about it actually until I watched this video. Thanks for this video. It was cool and calm which is what I love in videos. I am a clean-a-holic and I think I am hooked. I wish that I could start a cleaning class where I live(South Korea) because the standard of cleaning is much lower here than back at home(USA). Thanks again!!
Our mattress has a protection sheet. Its so awesome, its thick. It helps if you are a girl, and you get your period.

we use a mattress protector for sort of the opposite reason: to protect us from our mattress. we don't have a lot of money, so we got our mattress from the curbside. it appears clean and scent-free enough for use, but we feel a lot better with the plastic protector creating that barrier.

I use a water resistant and anti-allergen mattress bag that contains the mattress and a memory foam cover to increase comfort and minimize allergens, I replace this bag periodically as well. I put on a mattress pad over that that I wash every 2 months in hot water to kill off dust mites and remove all the nasties. I also have anti-allergen bags on my pillows too.

I absolutely use a mattress protector especially having raised a kitten and two puppies through the life of my mattress it has saved me countless times from pee stains and other messes from all three of them as well as my own mishaps. It is easy to remove and clean which I do regularly each time I change the sheets, or whenever there is an accident. If you are worried about the texture and don't want to lay on plastic than I can tell you mine is topped with a cloth texture and prevents that plastic feel and sound that may bother some people.
That's a great point, I am hoping I don't get sick this year (although it usually happens in the winter) so I am going to keep this in mind!

I use a single hollow fibre duvet, on my double bed Mattress, under my bottom sheet, which was suggested by a friend of mine, who does the same, as she says It makes the mattress more comfortable to lay on and also protects it from dead skin going on the mattress itself. A single Duvet actually covers the whole of the double mattress and stops buttons on the matress and springs poking through and digging into you. Then you have the option of washing that duvet every so often, or as my friend does, just throw it away and buy a new one. They don't have to be expensive ones.
Bedbug tip:
Diatomaceous earth powder really does the trick.
A thin layer around the bed footing and inside the rails will help do the job. Wrap your mattress heavily in plastic if you cant afford throw it away. That helps too.
When I purchased my first high quality pillow I invested in a pillow cover and it was from that that I picked up a mattress cover when I purchased my new bed. So far I haven't had any "proteins" or liquids yet, but I feel safe knowing it's protected. Thanks for this video, reminds me I have to rotate my mattress!

Using a fitted mattress cover is one of those no brainers, just pops on like a fitted sheet. It's one of those Murphy's Law things...if it's not there, for sure something will spill and soak through the sheet. Wish all the hotels used mattress protectors or pads.

I have airbnbs and my mattress protectors have saved my mattresses from hundreds upon hundreds of stains. All of the mattresses are still in great shape despite being in business for a couple years. 👍

I have two mattress pads, that way one is ready to go when changing the sheets. I wash my mattress pads just about every month. I also put an old towel between my fitted sheet and mattress pad when I'm sick, had surgery or need to, to protect my mattress. Putting it between the fitted sheet and the mattress pad prevents it from bunching up or sliding off while sleeping. Much cheaper to replace the sheet and towel than live with a mattress stain. I did wash my pillows a couple of weeks ago. In order to dry them on the clothes line, I popped the wet pillows into a pillow case and then wrapped the cuff around the line to pin it on the line. The pillows dried in the fresh sunshine and smelled wonderful. My matress topper actually zips off for cleaning.

I do use a matress cover, i have had my matress for almost 20 years and it looks like new i highly recommend you use the plastified matress protector.

I definitely use a mattress protector. I got upsold by the place I bought the mattress and for once I do not regret being pressured into something. It's pretty cool material - it does not feel plasticky or sound crinkly, but it is totally liquid-proof and under the fitted sheet I don't notice it's there at all. It has a sort of terrycloth finish on top. If you're not sure about them, instead of buying one online go to a higher-end store that sells mattresses and look at them in person so you can feel the material.
Seems like a good idea doesn't it? However, mattresses are designed to absorb the sweat (up to a pint in summer, per person, per night) and then dissipate it as it evaporates out the side vents. With a waterproof cover the sweat has nowhere to go, so you just lay in it, as it puddles up in the dent your body makes. How pleasant.
I always use a mattress protector and wash it with the sheets. No laying in 'puddles' of anything.
We use protect a bed mattress encasement, that zips around the mattress. We also use same name brand mattress protector that fits like a fitted sheet. Our dog just peed on the bed. I've striped down to the mattress and I"m washing everything. Now the mattress has an slight "pee" odor but no discoloration and is not wet. I'm hoping the baking soda will help get rid of that odor.

Great video! I use memory foam so always use a nice mattress cover but I love the water and essential oil spray to freshen the mattress. This would be an excellent idea for anyone staying in a hotel/motel and sleeping on the bed ~ ewe. I would feel much more comfortable having used this baking soda idea and bring along my own mini vac and mattress cover. Great video ~ Thanks!
I do use a mattress protector. I have one from Purple that I use and I love because it stretches and breathes well. I don’t wake up feeling sweaty. It’s awesome because I can wash it when I wash my sheets. Plus since I like to eat in bed sometimes, for me it’s essential.
