    I sometimes do this because of necessity. Wind direction and strength off of open ocean beach sometimes dictates raising the mainsail after pushing off. Great job! I do love my snap shackles.

      Check your lock at the top of the mast - It may be bent out of shape - or the halyard may need replacing.

    Hi Jo !
    Nice video as always ! I have put on the mainsail and jib halyards and also the jib tack a Key pin shackle with bar (from WICHARD's brand because it's easy to install and remove with a small rod and hammer). By this way, it's not possible to loose any pin in water and it's also faster to put the sails. To raise the mainsail I use a clamcleat power grip tool. It preserve my fingers from the halyard jaws ;). Nota that the a clamcleat power grip is helpful to lace up strong the trampoline (it's my fingers-friend).

    I tried Sail Cote this year for the first. Sprayed the luff rope on the main in the beginning of the season. So far it's been going up easier than ever and I only did it once so far.
    On another note, used to always have difficulties with fastening the jib clew to the jib main/traveler in windy conditions. The shackle is very small, I kinda like it that way, but it makes it a challenge to get it on the clew with the small threaded pin. I have dropped a couple in the water when the wind slaps the jib around. I solved this by taking the extra length of the main downhaul rope and temporarily looping it through the jib clew and back to the downhaul cleat. This makes it so much easier.

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. Nice choice - immobilising the clew of the jib will certainly make it easier.

      besides spraying the luff rope i attach a small peice of cloth to the halyard, spray it with lube and run it up and down the sial track to clean and lube it

    To make the sail go up easy, I always hose off the sails after using them. And sometimes, use soapy water, either on the sail, or in the tract, and it will slide right up.

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  ปีที่แล้ว

      Nice, we generally hose the sails before hoisting - to avoid putting them away wet. Makes a big difference.

    This is very helpful to see, thank you. I rigged up in shallow water (lake) the they day and dropped a pin, got lucky and found it but man do I need better hardware.

      At Wildwind they undo the mainsheet block from the boom when the boat is left on the moorings. It took them decades to switch to snapshackles. Before that, there must be hundreds of shackle pins in the mooring area that we dropped there, while on the rocking boat, having just two hands, but having to align block, boom, shackle loop and bolt...

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd say maybe we switched after a decade! But yes, the 'treasure hunt' certainly found a lot of pins in the mooring area.
      I think for most people - especially not racing - snap shackle it up!!

  • @Guy-ky9mc
    @Guy-ky9mc ปีที่แล้ว

    Very good 👍. I've also wondered how difficult it would be to raise a downed mast in the water (assuming you had the necessary hardware to fix whatever broke).. both 14 and 16 would be a challenge but possible I believe. Sails would have to be off of course.. but it would probably be difficult for the average Joe.. but we ain't average Joe's

    When I rig 16ft Hobies in the water, I usually hoist the jib half way before putting the pin in so the jib does not fall in the water.

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  ปีที่แล้ว

      I can see how that would work - maybe good to attach the sheets as well.

  • @imstillme3106

    Great stuff as usual Joe. I sail single-handed, and I always roll my mainsail from the bottom up (it means I can unfurl it as I hoist, or furl it as I lower it, without it spilling all over the place). I read somewhere that this is a bad and wicked thing to do. What do others think? Should I mend my evil ways?

    • @__X__O__O__
      @__X__O__O__ ปีที่แล้ว

      We do the same in the club ! 👍

    • @feedingravens
      @feedingravens ปีที่แล้ว

      At Wildwind, as I understand them, the main reason for furling top first is because they get the main down on the water, and in the afternoon it is windy, so you want a tight package. and not have the top end flapping around and eventually the wind blowing the sail from the boat.
      I heard that the idea of top down is that the slim part inside creates a bulge that better keeps the bulge in the sail. It's up to you think that works. In any case, if you have canted battens in the top (like the Hobie Tiger), you always have to remove them before furling.
      I am too lazy for that, I furl my Tiger sail bottom up, the tip with the canted button nicely lies flat as the last item in the box.
      But I would not claim that my 20-year old sail is still in perfect shape and how much that style of furling contributes to that - and how much is simply age.

    • @viktorspett8819
      @viktorspett8819 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do the same here just paying attention not to bend the battens, kind of folding the slack away on the longer side as I go

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  ปีที่แล้ว

      I find, for rolling sails - if you are alone, from the top is much easier, although from the bottom makes more logical sense.
      I think however, if you are hoisting with low wind, having the sail totally unrolled before hoisting gives less resistance .

    • @viktorspett8819
      @viktorspett8819 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JoyriderTV definately, but who hoists a sail if there is low wind? 🤪

  • @egyvalaki5215

    Another Lake Balaton sailor... I also prefer hoisting the sails afloat as getting the boat out involves several 90-degree turns and trees, so it caused issues to reach the water. As you advised long before, I like to wet the main (sometimes it still takes 20 minutes or so to have them up), so dipping it before putting it on the trampoline is easier this way. However, I confirm what Viktor says... in bigger wind and waves, this is like riding a roller-coaster while holding on to the mast with all limbs trying to feed the main, sweating the halyard and retying it to the horn cleat at the same time. But at least you know you'll have a great time out once you are done. It was familiar to hear you grasping for air when you were hoisting the main... sometimes I get more tired with that than sailing itself.
    Not too many pins and rings lost so far, but why shouldn't we use carabiner hooks?

    • @viktorspett8819
      @viktorspett8819 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep carabiner hooks is another good idea, but I would like to be able to clip in to different points at the tack of the jib so thats why I am looking into quick lock pins

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      snap shackles will be stronger for these applications.

    • @viktorspett8819
      @viktorspett8819 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JoyriderTV I was wondering if that doesn’t create to much of a gap for fixing the tack of the sail. I am afraid I could not go down enough, but either way I guess I’ll just have to try a few things. If there was only consistent wind here to have more attempts 🤭. I do envy the flat water and wind conditions over there at wildwind 🤩. Maybe I can work there next season? 🥰

    I have to rig my 16 on the water every now and then. After losing several pins / split rings in the water, I switched my jib clew and downhaul-to-boom shackles to quick links (no “loose” parts to accidentally drop). I’m still searching for a less “droppable” shackle for the jib tack tho.

    • @viktorspett8819
      @viktorspett8819 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe fix your pin where you usually put the sail and then use snap shackles? Or I believe there are pins with a spring instead of a lock ring.

    Can you do a video on how to launch a Hobie 14 from a beach with serious waves, like what you did at Langebaan SA.

    I am used to inland sailing only...

    • @JoyriderTV

      The launch from Main Beach in Langebaan is very flat so that would be the better choice.
      At Mykanos however, that can be pretty chunky.

    I sail on lake Balaton in Hungary. Unfortunately I have to rigg off my mooring as well. The hobie 14 turbo was not much of an issue with the fixed rig tension and the jib roller. With the 16 I am struggling in conditions with more wind and especially waves.. Imagine doing this with the boat rocking back and forth.. Water is fairly shallow though so I can stand in it. What I struythe most with is taking the jib off without getting it wet to store safely. Snap shackles and bolts are definitely on my shopping list 😀 I did loose a shackle already when there were waves and I was trying to fix the tack of the jib. A wave just pulled the boat above and out of my hands🤦‍♂️

    • @JoyriderTV
      @JoyriderTV  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for sharing.
      Maybe a solution for the jib might be to attach the corners before launching with the sail down (might need a longer halyard)
      And then have the sail tied with elastic which could be released when it's time to hoist - then reverse procedure for coming in.

    When I did sail 16ft Hobies. I was shown many years ago by a older guy who sailed Hobies, to tune our sails by using a lot of downhaul on the jib and then lock it in place to bend the mast to create a bow in main sail, this creates a wing effect on the sail.
    Is this mast tuning used now by you?
