  • My First Ugandan Train Ride In Kampala. This Is Uganda's Only Passenger Train.
Uganda Railways Corporation (URC) is a corporate organization reporting to Ministry of Works and Transport and established under the mandate of the Uganda Railways Corporation Act, cap 331 to carry out construction, operation, and maintenance of railway, marine and road services both in and outside Uganda for the carriage of Goods and Passengers.
Passenger trains resumed operations in February 2018 and the current route is Kampala to Namanve and the train makes four routes on a daily.
The train is effective when it comes to saving time and money. For starters, passengers going between Kampala and Bweyogerere paid Shs 1,000 while those reaching Namanve pay Shs 1,500 but as of May 2019, I paid Shs 1000 from Kampala to Namanve.

I'm very pleased to see that the railways in Uganda have started to carry passengers again. I am extremely fortunate in that I took a train from Nairobi to Kampala and back to Nairobi in 1995, and my 2 week stay in Kampala persuaded me to move to Uganda, which I did, and stayed a number of years.
This train trip was the best one I have ever taken
Whilst living in Kampala I regret not taking the train to both Kasese and Pakwach as both routes were running at the time. You don’t think something like a train can just stop running - but unfortunately they both did - the security situation in the north at the time stopped the trains, and the track degraded, and in the west there were floods which washed away the line and there was no money left to repair them. The replacement of ballast with the workings from Kilembe mines didn’t help as that eat away at the metal sleepers.
I worked with the railway workshop at Nalukongo for a number of years and tried to organise a fund-raising passenger trip to Jinja and back in the one passenger coach that seemed to be still in working order, but couldn’t get it past Uganda Railways officials.
So all of you in Uganda, take the train, and demand that the service be extended further and further.

Wow! Thank you Chris for this elaborate expression of how a simple train ride can be impactful. I personally have a unique attatchment to the moments i spent in that passenger train and love to see it resume full operation with new routes to more places across the country.
Thank you once again for sharing your experience and contribution.
