  • This video covers two aspects of APRS; How to send an SMS text message to a cell phone and How to send an email using your APRS radio. Both features can be a vital role in emergency communications when no other forms of comms are available and one that a beginner Technician license holder can do.

    How do you tell if the SMSGTE servers are down? On Friday I was able to send a bunch of texts and emails with no trouble. Yesterday and today, nothing will go through, and SMSGTE doesn't really tell you what's going on.

    I also hear snoring in the background? That aside great informative video. I've tried the SMS and it's very cool. Thank you.

    You could use APRSDROID app and do it faster on the phone of course you have to connect radio to the cellphone(I use Mobilinkd via bluetooth)

      That is only true if you have an android phone with the app installed as well as the ability to link it to your radio. If you have a radio that is capable of doing it in a standalone capacity you have less likelihood for errors to occur as well as a malfunction in equipment.
      The best way is the way that fits your needs and equipment's capabilities at the end of the day.

    Good commentary but it would be much better if you could zoom in or put the lens closer to the radio so we could actually see the typing/fonts etc.

      What didn't work, SMS or Email? If it was SMS (texting), that option is currently unavailable using any APRS radio due to the SMSGTE being taken offline with the most recent changes from the FCC and business' spamming the system.
      I need to find time to update the video to reflect the issue with SMS.

      @@ka6ete217 it was the SMS. I figured that out after doing further research. I still haven't tried email though. I will work on that next. Thanks for your reply. KN4UMV

    Do you know if there is a limit to the size of email that can be sent over aprs?

    • @ka6ete217
      @ka6ete217  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The limit to the size of the email you can send via APRS is the number of characters your radio will allow, I believe it is around 64 characters.

    I can’t get it to wok here in Wyoming. Not sure what the problem is.

      Could be a couple different things, depending on what you have your APRS settings at. You may be hitting a digipeater but not an iGate. If you are not already try the APRS setting of "Wide 1-1, Wide 2-1". It may be a simple as increasing the number of hops the packet will go before ending depending on how saturated the area is.

      @@ka6ete217 thanks to you, I got it to work! I changed it to Wide 1-1. It was already set you way you said. This is all new to me, only been doing this for 2 1/2 months. Thanks so much. Now I’m going to try an email!
