  • LET'S PLANT!
    EP 16 - Dealing with fungus
    It's a funny and sad coincidence that this episode comes after the episode about watering. But just to help everyone feel better, the echeveria was already starting to rot before the previous episode!
    Anyway, this episode turned out longer than I expected. It's around twice the length as a typical Let's Plant episode.
    In this video I cover everything from discovering that the plant is starting to rot, pulling it out for treatment, and all the way to replacing it with another plant to fill up the void left by it.

    DUDE! So jealous of your climate there is California. You're so lucky to be able to plant your lovely garden right down in the ground. Love to you from Texas!!!

    An unrelated incident I had with Haworthias, is a massive infestations of scales and root rot, often coming together on the same plant. While attempting different things, I have realized that small cuttings which were rooted in small clay pots (I call them "Espresso" sized pots) with moderate direct sun exposure has given mee robust plants which have resisted those unfavorable conditions. Scales, if any, were smaller and fewer. I have one Echeveria plant which Is the only one so far that I grew this way. The plant is holding well. As I had Echeverias in the past, I had the same black rot infestation, which spreaded faster than what plant propagation can make-up for, and I eventually lost most of the Echeverias. This spring, I am going to attempt this techniques with my Echeverias. I will take small pups and root them in the small clay pots.

    One YT suggests that a DEHYDRATED succulent will open it's pores to absorbe moisture so if it gets water in the leaves but not the roots it is much more likely to absorb water to the roots and Rot.

    Hi Chuck, Have you investigated the use of hydrogen peroxide. It is anti fungal anti bacterial and anti viral. I don't know about today but when my sons were young it was used in hospitals for cleaning messy wounds because of all those reasons and its oxygenation properties. I use a diluted solution for soaking my seeds pre planting, for spraying on my seedlings to prevent fungal infections and for treating soil pre planting.

    • @Cerriscapades
      @Cerriscapades  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi there. I've got a few friends who were suggesting the same thing to me before. I agree that using hydrogen peroxide is a good idea. I know some of my friends use it to treat the soil they're going to use for germination. So it's good that you bring this up for others to be aware of!
      I generally try not to use any fungicides with my seedlings just to see how far I can push it. I'm currently experimenting. In my third attempt, I managed to germinate AND keep the seedlings alive without fungicides. In the future, when I'm more serious about creating my own hybrids, I'll probably have to go the extra mile and take all precautions.
      Thanks for the reminder though. I have a concentrated mancozeb bottle somewhere just in case I need to whip up an antifungal solution, but it's good to know of the alternatives too.

    Do your potted succulents grow better planted in ground or pots ??? I have been trying for 2 years to create a succulent garden in Florida. Most are lost due to too much rain. Sun is not a problem. I am now preparing a planting bed that is sheltered from rain by a roof hangover but will only get 4 to 6 hours of sun a day. Thank you so much for posting your videos!!! I am learning so much!

    • @Cerriscapades
      @Cerriscapades  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mine grow better in the ground, mainly because they are not stunted by being cramped in a tight space. They tend to grow much larger that way as opposed to being in a tight container. This may or may not be a good thing depending on how much space you have. Some people prefer pots since they do not have a big yard or something.

    Hello! What is the orange colored echevaria and the cream colored one next to it by the one you pulled out of the ground? Your plants are gorgeous! I am trying to build up my collection of succulents, but I don't think I will ever have as many beautiful ones as you do! Do you sell any?

      Are they in the bowls? You might be looking at Echeveria "Curls" and Echeveria colorata "Mexican Giant".

    Maybe you can give me some advice since I can't seem to find any answers online anywhere. On my favorite echeveria I just noticed some round spots (little smaller than a dime), and they are the same color as the plant, just a little darker in color. There is one round spot on each leaf, and about 5 leaves have it. I have no idea what to do? Could it be a fungus? Is a systemic fungicide the way to treat? I sprayed with Neem oil yesterday. Thank you so much!

    • @Cerriscapades
      @Cerriscapades  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on what the spot looks like. Can you upload a photo and share me the link? If you're not sure how, send me an email (check my about page for contact).

      Sorry for the late reply, I didn't see your comment sooner. If you're referring to the one in the ground near where I pulled out the echeveria chihuahuaensis, then that's an Echeveria 'Black Prince'.

      If I think I'm away for extended periods, I would set up a temporary shade structure on top of them using shade cloth. Most of the water they get is from the rain. Sometimes we get a friend to come over to help with watering the non-succulent plants at least once a week (since we also have ornamentals, vegetables and a small fruit tree at the back).

      Jules Webb not yet but I am actively propagating now to sell in the future. However I'm just probably selling locally (Melbourne, Australia) in the first instance. Once I build a better inventory in the future, I'll step up and post to the other Australian states (pending quarantine laws).
