How to Propagate Succulents Fast n Easy

  • Propagating succulents from leaves is a simple project that requires a few steps and a couple supplies. After cutting off a healthy leaf, the leaf will naturally sprout new roots, and a new plant will grow from these roots. Succulents make an excellent gift, are a great way to welcome somebody new to the neighborhood, and can be exchanged between friends and fellow gardeners. It is easy to propagate new succulents from leaves, but because not every leaf will take, you should try rooting at least 5-6 leaves at a time.
    DAIZZ'S TIPS:-
Step by step: How to grow succulents from cuttings
    Remove the lower leaves
Chop the remaining rosette from the stem
Let all the parts dry out and create a callous where they’ve been removed
Place on top of soil until roots and baby plants start forming
Remove the original leaf and plant the new offspring, as well as the original rosette - tada!
    Propagate Succulents from Leaves
1.) Select a healthy leaf to propagate. Choose a leaf that is in good health, with a hearty shape and no rips or blemishes. Typically you will choose a larger, more mature leaf than a young, under-developed one.
Pull the leaf off neatly. Use a razor blade or a craft knife to make a clean cut. The knife or blade should be sterilized in white spirit or similar before use; this prevents the transfer of any disease that could harm the succulent plant.
Some plants, like "jade plants", the leaves will come off easily or even drop off the plant spontaneously. You can either use "volunteers" or select the one you want.
If you use your fingers, be very gentle. Twist the leaf carefully back and forth, from side to side to pull it off intact, without ripping the stem of the plant.
    2.)
Let the leaf or leaves dry. Once you pulled off the leaves you wish to propagate, allow them to dry out a little bit. Let them dry for 1-3 days.
Do not water the leaf until after 1-3 days as your leaf may turn brown and mushy and will start to rot.
The "wound" on the stem of the parent plant should also be allowed to air dry in a sheltered and well-lit spot for a few hours. During its healing process, the plant will seal the wound and help prevent disease from getting in.
Place the dried leaves on some soil ready to grow. Just place them on top of the soil. Do not bury or semi-bury into the soil. The roots will find their way into the soil on their own. As you're going to look at it for a good amount of months, you may as well make it look nice in pretty pattern or just place them randomly - that's all up to you.
The soil should be well drained. If you need to improvise good growing soil, mix half well-rotted compost with half fine pumice or grit.
Water the leaf. The leaves need water at some point but only a light sprinkling. While "grown-up" succulents only need to be watered every second week, or even once a month (depending on the season/heat), the leaves need to be watered constantly without being watered too much. Only water the soil after it is dry (stick your finger into the soil around the planted leaves; if it feels moist, watering is not needed but if it's dry, then water).
Wait. All you have to do now is to wait for the leaves to grow roots or even new leaves. You'll see some changes within just a month or so.

Thanks for the help. I got my first tiny little succulent from a friend last summer, it was half-dead on arrival, partially cooked on my friend's car dashboard after being found in a trash bin. It was making a full recovery, but this winter I accidently knocked it over and broke the stem. I saved the leaves and been trying much of your advice, now many of the leaves are taking root. It feels good being able to give this plant yet another chance to shine.

I've knocked over two of my jade plants in the last 6 months and it's so frustrating. The first one died within a week and none of the leaves took, the second one wasn't as damaged and I'm hoping it'll be okay. It's been a week already so it's already doing better than the first one.

THANK YOU!!! I cannot wait to get started on my own. I've been looking for ways to propagate my jade and you helped with the breakdown of all the things I've been doing wrong. Now I know how to fix my mistakes and I am sure I will have very healthy plants. Thank you for sharing and breaking this down.

Thank you for saying why not to put them in the soil right away because I've had so many leaves die and always just assumed it was a 50/50 chance of sprouting. Although it may be for the best about half of the ones I got did get to sprout quickly and I didn't have enough extra cash laying around to buy a new pot for all of them.

Just a friendly reminder, literally anything (in theory) can be used as a pot so long as you have access to some soil. I’ve used old candle jars (after having melted out all the old wax with boiling hot water of course), metal tins from various food products, old glass jars from food items and metal buckets. Also any ceramic pots or containers that I had spare just laying around. Literally anything can be used in theory, even ceramic bowls and kitchenware. Just whatever you have spare laying about. These are especially good to use whilst your plants are still establishing a root system as you can’t say for sure that they will 100% survive, once you’re confident they will survive and they’ve grown a little into a appropriate sized plant you can go out and purchase a proper terracotta pot or what have you (even then those pots aren’t overly expensive whatsoever but I prefer personally not to have dozens of empty pots laying around since I live in an apartment with limited balcony space so I’ll only purchase more plant pots as I need them).

      - You can use empty plastic containers that grocery produce comes in; a broken mug; anything that can hold the potting mix (in this case cocoa-peat was used); empty face cream jars; caps off hair-spray or shaving-cream containers; anything under the sun!

    • @zaria.rejean

@@elaineculbert8594 Being able to use anything sounds great, but what about the fact that these other items don’t have drainage holes for the water?

    • @elaineculbert8594
      @elaineculbert8594 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@zaria.rejean - When you’re “sprouting” something, there’s not much of a root system for a while, therefore, drainage holes aren’t that vital. When watering, a good misting is all that’s necessary so there’s little water collecting at the bottom. That’s why I’m saying any item that can hold a small amount of potting mix is sufficient until time has passed and there’s a good root system. Then, yes, drainage holes are then needed when the seedling/sapling/etc. is being replanted to a larger, more permanent container.

I am just starting out. I have used some takeaway food dishes, cactus mix and a spray bottle. I just laid them all out today. I have 25 various leaves laid out. I bought some overgrown-end-of-season plants from my nursery and have taken the leaves off to propagate, and have made a bow from the cuttings. I am hoping for some of the echeveria black princes to take. :) Thank you for your tips. I can't wait to see what happens.
