I think there was no callback to that because a feature of Wii Play Motion is that it will not threaten you. It's probably the third biggest reason why they felt a sequel was necessary, right below Wii Play's sales figures and Pose Mii Plus.

Wikipedia even confirms that space docking minigame was one of the last projects they worked on before they merged with Spike. And yeah it doesn't surprise me at all their minigame was terrible. It seems to be a weak point of theirs to the point I'm shocked they were invited to the party
