  • Training for a marathon takes a lot of focus and commitment. The fewer errors while training, the better. This is particularly true as we get older as runners. This video looks at marathon training mistakes to avoid.

    Hi Lee! As a 52 year old endurance runner and coach myself, I see these all the time! Great advice here! Keep pushing!

    Hi Lee. Thanks for this really good advice. As a 55 yr old with my first marathon coming up in five weeks, I have been working on the principles of time on feet, and doing bulk of running at an easy pace to build an aerobic base. Your comments about if you do an 8 mile run on Saturday, you start your long run on Sunday at mile 8 struck a chord. Thank you again

    Lee. I enjoy running tips. Have you considered taking the camera out on a run with you now and again?

    Hi Lee. Great stuff. Really enjoying your comments and advice. I am a 72 year old triathlete and I take my training and competition seriously. You are so right that balancing rest and recovery is important and often difficult to achieve. My main reason for commenting here is that I often use the 80/20 rule for individual workouts as doing this can get complicated for an overall triathlon plan. Perhaps you could comment further on this. I hope you can give the over 70s a plug. There are a lot of us out there still enjoying our sport.

      I coach a triathlete. However only in his running.
      I think it’s hard to truly keep to 80/20.
      I think in his case where he has been pushing to improve his running he has taken down the intensity and volume of some of his bike rides .
      My feeling this is fairly intuitive than rigid in nature .

    Hi Lee…just came across this video. You’ve said you don’t like to see your runners run over 3 hours during a long run. I really like the run/walk strategy. Would you use that same guideline for run/walk training or could the time on one’s feet be longer? And thanks for the video.

    • @Silverbackrunner
      @Silverbackrunner  ปีที่แล้ว

      You could go longer walking as it is less strain. However, the question in my head is, why? Risk vs reward.
      Many runners will run longer to feel better about their running. Of course, it's goal and ability dependent.
      But I would look at the overall time on the feet within a week.
      Then ask how going over 3 hrs of walking and running helps with your running goal and how quickly you recover from that workout.
      The above is general because everyone is different and has different goals and abilities.
      Iam a massive fan of walking. In general, it's a low-impact exercise that works alongside running well.

    Hi Lee Have you done a video on your time goal for Manchester and how you came to that goal?

    • @Silverbackrunner
      @Silverbackrunner  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Kenneth,
      I am doing Brighton Marathon in April.
      I plan to do a video post race covering that aspect of goal setting ,
      For me it’s a bit science and a bit gut feeling that normally informs my goals related to race times.

      @@Silverbackrunner So no specific goal time at this stage of your training?

    • @Silverbackrunner
      @Silverbackrunner  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kennethbate2117 Yes . I would like to achieve between 3.15-3.24. However, marathons being marathons, we shall see :)

    I just turned 60 and started running 4 months ago.
    I registered for my 1st marathon in 3 months time.
    I just want to finish,so is 5.30hr reasonable goal?
    What's the longest distance I need to achieve in next few months,is 20 miles the goal and how often?

    • @Silverbackrunner
      @Silverbackrunner  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Alan, traditionally 18 to 20 miles is the longest run.
      But also think time on your feet .
      Personally I would not want one of my runners out running longer than 3 hours in one go.
      It does happen .
      But remember about accumulative load over a week and a month .
      Also recovery is key as well . You don’t want to arrive at the race fatigued .
      Best of luck .

      @@GTE_Channel Hi
      My marathon is in Oct now.Was going in May,but I fasted for a month and it wasn't realistic to get up to distance. I have to re plan my training,as,due to diagnosis of prostate cancer,iam going to a keto diet.Also gone to low heart rate MAF training. So re doing the whole strategy.
