I started running 7 months ago and I ran my first half marathon 2 months ago at 02:15:00. My weekly mileage was just under 20 miles. I used to do around 13 miles every other week for a long run. I just registered for my first full marathon to take place in 8 months. I am steadily increasing my weekly mileage to around 40-50. My current mileage is around 22, so it may take around two months to reach that mileage. So very stoked to be training for this (at least for now haha).

Dude my first half was in March and I ran it in 2:15 Also! I walked towards the end I think I pushed too hard in the beginning. Running my first full next year so I have some time… goood luck!!!

My first marathon ◇NYC◇ was a struggle, but I wouldn't change it for the world. I learned some valuable lessons and I can't wait to put them into action over the next couple of months for the LA marathon

Coaching runners to not bank time in the marathon is definitely one of my hills to die on, but I absolutely love how you extended the banking metaphor to share how if you do, you'll end up needing to withdraw it later "with interest." Always learning from you, Jason, and appreciate your expertise!

This was super helpful. Great reminders for first timers and for those that have a few under their belt. I have always trained to finish. This year, I am training to perform.

Your videos do deserve 1000 times more views. Quality info & clearly laid out content. Hope your channel grows, as there are tons of runners out there that could benefit from "the basic, obvious but often overlooked bits of advice" -myself included.

I’ve done 12 marathons in the past (plus 3 Ironman triathlons) but none in the last 3 or 4 years and not run at all in the last 2 years. I’ve just started running again and it feels like I’m starting all over again - although in reality it’s worse than that, because I also have the memory of being a half decent runner! I think this is going to be harder than I was expecting. I found this video very useful tho, so many thanks for making it 😃

The Hal Higdon program in his book, "Marathon: The Ultimate Training Guide," seems a good one. He gives separate schedules for everyone from novice 1st timers to advanced guys. One has to decide whether just finishing is the goal or really racing it. I am planning my 1st marathon next year or the year after. I am running all the distances and will do a few half's 1st before I do a full marathon. I am gathering information.

      @theman4884 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Good luck. One thing he didn't mention but came close too with speed work is to add some races to your schedule. I think Hal Higdon does this. Hopefully long races. If you can't find a 20 mile race (often they will be offered to help people train for the marathon) doing a 5 mile - 10K Saturday isn't a bad idea. And then you still have Sunday for your long run.

@@theman4884 Well, I've got 3 5K's and 1 10K scheduled before the end of this year. On January 23rd I have a half marathon, so I going to get my speed work for sure!

    @theman4884 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

You came close with your last point. But the most concise way to put it is: "If the pace does not feel slow at the start, your are going too fast".
I would add one more bit of advice which I would think people would already know but some how do not. Learn to take water on the run. I am shocked to see people in the Boston Marathon stopping to take water. WTF.

I am running Rock’n Roll Marathon in San Diego and I have 100 days left. I did a half marathon (check) and after a break I am back on the track with a long run per week, 3 to 4 indoor cycling classes for stamina, a speed run training and an optional recovery run and a rest day. Now I just need to fit in one or two strength training sessions.

I'm new to running. 4or5 months in. I finally hit the 14 mile mark. So I started a20 week beginner marathon training plan.
MY problem is Time. I'm a Single dad taking care of my daughter full Time. I'm waking up at 3am to get a runs/gym workouts in. I'm currently running 6-10 miles on base runs and 6 miles tempo this week. So long as I keep my heart rate under 150 I cam run for a while. I haven't signed up for a marathon yet, though once I know I can do it, I will.
    Thanks for the advice

My first marathon was full of mistakes: threw away the gatorade bottle because it was frozen, didn't bring any gel pack, started out as fast as I could and then hung on for dear life. My legs gave out at mile 18. Finished at about 4:45. 😊

Good luck. I am in the same boat. A former training partner of mine long ago made a very astute point. "People get fit faster then their bodies strengthen to handle the stress". Basically people get injured because they are getting fit but their body isn't yet ready for the stress. So, take it slow.

I do low mileage training. I never cut back on my long run. I increase it by 1 mile each week leading up to the marathon. So for the last week of the marathon I might be running 22-24 miles. Then I take about 4-5 days off. Do a shakeout run. Then race. Yeah I agree to not cut back on the long run because it is the most important run for the marathon. The long tempo work or speed sessions can be cut back but not the long run. As I increase my long run distance, I decrease my speed sessions just a tiny bit.

I am starting my marathon training (your plan) next week. ♥️
I’ve been told my Apple Watch won’t have the battery life to last the entire marathon… so that being said I want to do my entire training with the Watch I will use for the race day.
What would you say is the best Watch for my marathon training/ race day ?? (Dubai marathon)

Running my first road 50k in Dallas in December . Just hope I have something left over because I got a 100 miler in October . It's all roll overs the 50k was going to be in may but they moved it back to December so might as well run it and my 100 a roll over so kind of no choice.

Good list. I agree but I am a little confused by what you mean by cut back week. I have used a modification of the Benji Durden plan. Basically I go up two miles on the long run three weeks in a round and then back off two on the third. The progression goes something like this:
    12
    14
    16
    14
    16
    18
    16
    18

    22
    20
    22
    24
    22
    24
    16
    12
    Race!
