Hey, I'm glad I found your channel, nice rats! I also raise Asf's (since July 2018) and I find the Aspen bedding from kaytee works well. The way it's cut makes it feel softer. I get it at a local store in Pleasant Valley NY in a 4 cubic foot bag. I can only assume it's cut the same for all size bags. Also in reference to pink feet issues, I've heard that pine is somewhat toxic to all or most rodents so I have changed strictly to aspen and don't experience this. The thin fur on the babies might not be the substrate. I have experienced this numerous times with the same mothers. The babies appear pink because the fur is so thin but then it fills in and they appear normal. I separated and bread these together and they developed a strange morph. Thin only on top like a stripe from head to tail and then grew into two different types of fur. Short brown fur where it was thin, and longer, thicker fur on the sides in grey. I'm not on TH-cam yet. Hope this helps. I love that you brought this topic up for people to learn about!
Thanks for the input I have things alot more under control now with the substrates .... And yea out of all the things I do on my channel I get asked what are ASF Rats all the time...Thanks for stopping in ...Take Care & Stay Wild!!!!
I keep rats (not asf) and use coco coir as substrate they really get a lot from digging around in it and I haven't had any issues with it and it absorbs better than anything else might be worth trying out
With African Soft Furred Rats its a 50/50 lol Some people say they have nice and some they are all mean...But like anything else if you raise it up from a baby I'm sure it would be fine
I just aquired 7 males and they are amazing. I'm looking for some females so I can start a colony to breed. I already breed mice and jumbo rats. These African Furred Rats are fun! Do you know where i could get some females? Thanks for the video! Very informative.
Coconut husk mixed with peat moss, cypress mulch, organic topsoil, crushed wood charcoal (not briquettes) mix well. Sprinkle with microgreen seeds, let grow. Add rats after the sprouts have grown up a bit. Or take dead leaves/let sit in a tub filled with hot water for 10 minutes, add leaves to top of the substrate They like this set up a lot, you can take the tainted bedding and drop in a large tub or can and compost, reuse in a few months. Get clean tubs started before rats need to be changed, some tubs will grow out with vegitation but the rats will take it out quickly. Otherwise you can add it to your snake enclosures to feed your springtails and isopods. With this set up, order mealworms in bulk, add a large handful to enclosure. The rats will go nuts eating them and whatever they do not catch will eat rat waste. This is a good subtrate for rats and will eventually be 100% recycled material, no longer having to buy bedding. Seeds can be harvested yourself as well. You may occasionally need to replace the decomposed wood but it takes a very long time and only $4 for like 4 cu ft.
Hey talked to you about a little over a month ago! Well I got me a couple of colonies started and about five days ago I finally got my first litter! It does take a while for them to get going. But I'm happy now and I'm hoping my other colony has babies soon as well! I have been using kiln dried pine and mine seem to be fine.
There’s 2 asf for sale near me and they need rehoming I feel so bad leaving them in bad conditions but I already have 3 so I’m doing some research to see if it’s safe ☺️
I have had three ASF (two female and one male) for months now. I think they are 5+ months old. One female looks big! But no babies. It has been weeks and weeks that I check the cage two times a day and still no babies. Is there anything I am missing here? Feeding them a ton. They have a little hide in their cage. Two females and not sure why I am not getting babies.
We get paper bedding over here in the uk called fitch don't know if you have anything like it in the states but it keeps odours down and helps keep them warm
Ivan's kiln dried pine flakes.....I've tried others, I keep coming back to it...works well for me...definitely not dust free but in two years of breeding never had an eye or respiratory infection....never noticed red feet, dosen't mean it hasn't happened, never been a problem, so never noticed
I really like BoxoComfort from Walmart, its a recycled paper bedding with no scented stuff. I found aspen, carefresh, etc made my rats sneezy and itchy but BoxoComfort so far has been awesome. I had ONE issue with a larger bag that I bought from a Bulk Barn, but all the smaller ones I've gotten from Walmart have been awesome. Most beddings make me sneezy too, but Boxo doesn't. And its suuuper soft.
It looks like some of the smaller rats that have hair loss could be due to barbering. Usually it's the bigger guys that barber the little ones, that's why the bigger guys have more hair. This is what I've seen anyway.
I used to breed normal hooded rats as a teenager and I bought a paper shredder and would shred regular white printer paper then put that in for the new babies. I used hand shredded newspaper at first but of course the dye came off on them if it got wet.
U can try some paper pellets instead of wood, something like yesterdays news cat litter. I personally dont like the paper pellets as cat litter cuz it cant be sifted out like the wood pellets (i use wood pellets as cat litter), but they might work for u for the ASFs. Rn i breed all albino fancy rats for my snakes and cats (my cats eat whole prey), but ive been having problems with the babies not getting big enough fast enough, and my females haven't been having big enough litters or dont produce enough milk. I feed them cat or dog kibble cuz its cheap but they also get table scraps, so i dont think diet is the issue. I also can never keep more than 1 female with babies at a time cuz they fight over the babies and end up killing them. Ive been breeding rats for 6+yrs and ive always had this problem. Looking into breeding ASFs instead but was wondering how long it takes them to get full grown size to feed off (i have a male ball python and the full sizes ASF would be perfect size for him), how bad do they stink, and how well do they breed?
They have lil to no smell ...But they do take longer to get to full size ...But with ASF RATS you can't just separate a female it doesn't work that way like other RATS once you have a colony going you have to leave them together..and ASF RATS are amazing for any size ball python ....And I would feed your RATS F6 rodent diet ...Diet is big in breeding RATS And try giving the moms some milk biscuits they are great for lactating moms
Is F6 all you feed or is there a mix you add? Also do you use insects at all as treats? I just started two colonies and was given a baggie of food with them. It’s F6 and Iams kitten kibble. Is the kibble necessary? I also read fruits and veggies are good to give also. Do you know which ones are good vs bad? Thanks
I'm looking at this to learn how to care for them since I'm going to be getting 2 females to put with my male fancy mouse. Would you say that these little guys are aggressive in any way? I saw how you could just stick your hand in there and they were fine and I just want to make sure it'll be okay to handle them regularly. Thanks!❤
your rats looks good and sorry that i don't have time to read all the comments but i got so fed up of my rats getting eye infections and i've been breeding rats for a long 29years. The best thing i found looks a lot like your pine pellets that you first put in the tub but here i get hard wood pellets. It's cheap at 5 to 6 dollars per 40lb bags. It's the same thing they use to heat homes in pellet stove. I've tried different brand and they all do good, no problem and no smell and in my pet store people don't smell my rodents like they do in other per stores. So yea if you can try the hard wood pellet maybe you'll get better luck. Even my hairless mice, rats and even skinny pigs all so well on the pellets. Good luck
Great job I just had issues feeding off one of my rats he got a little to big and my biggest snake couldn't take him down she tried but it was a no go. Hes currently vacuumed sealed and in the freezer until I can find someone who needs one his size. Asf are legal in my state just can't find them at all do you sell and ship yours I definitely want to get some started

You can ...Just doesn't have any oder control...lots of different substrates...just try different stuff and find out what works best of you.....Take Care & Stay Wild!!!!

How do you train your asf not to chew down all the blocks to the tub floor without really eating them? So i don't have to put down food for them daily? I am using lab cages from basic reptiles. Thank you in advance.
It does happen from time to time ...I think they do it when the younger rats are getting ready to eat on there own so if I have fuzzy or hoppers in the tubs i throw down some from time to time .. Works for me thanks for watching...Take Care & Stay Wild!!!!
@@MYANIMALHOUSE i am feeding them mazuri f6 rodent lab blocks as staple diet. I also put down some uncooked veggie pasta, corn on the cob, baby carrots as treats.

Let me ask you this. I started breeding ASFs, I have a 1.4 ratio in a 20 gallon long aquarium. 3 females have dropped and 1 is close. I have about 25 babies ranging from 3 weeks to new born. What is the best way to separate the babies from the moms. I was thinking about 3 more containers. One for males, one for females and one to start another breeding group. Is there an issue if I move new weaned into the Male and female tubs if I keep them separated by sex?. Thanks
You should look into buying or making a rat rack I have an awesome DIY video on how to build one ...It makes thing so much easier & healthier than tanks
@@MYANIMALHOUSE Thanks for the reply! I have 1 regular rack ( 5 cement mixing tubs) up and running and just about done with a second. I was thinking about doing one for the ASF's also. I guess it's the same just 1/4" hardware cloth instead of the 1/2" correct?
@@banovak611 that's funny I just did a video that comes out in about 10 mins talking about that for any of the racks I would use the 1/4 for the big part and the 1/2 only for food area...I talk about why in the video ...I hope this helps
Well I do after a month or so ...But no they all work together the dad and older babies will help with the new babies ... witch is good less work for me
Natural paper bedding is the best bedding for rats and a little bit goes a long way and it keeps the odor down that's why I use I have eight rats in my room and I have no odor two of them I adopted from the Humane Society and the other six I bought from a reptile place that sells them as feeder rats mine are Dumbo eared rats and fancy rats but they're pets and no I don't breed them they're my babies
ASF’s are their own species. They’re not mice or rats. Please don’t call them rats. I raise mine on a bio active substrate. No smells, they dig for springtails and mealworms that keeps them active and healthy.
I have albino African soft furs and I use the brand so fresh from PetSmart watch out because they have it right next to Cedar and pine but get the Aspen and if you put like a little bowl in there with some hay don't use that as a bathroom I use like a little bit of Aspen and a little bit of hay mixed up like crushed and no use it as like a little bathroom like a small little bowl like 4 inches across but I also give mine tubes of cardboard tubes that they can run in little cardboard boxes at The Crawling under the substrate and I give them like 4-5 in I like to borrow around but they're really smart to pick out their own bathroom they're not smart enough like Norway rats toy you can train them with little tricks but they're still cool and you can definitely get them very friendly I suggest not wearing rubber gloves I see spot clean rubber gloves and I don't know what happened the one day the thing lunged at me and bit me not a nip thing bit me and I've had a you know nip you it's not bad they don't draw blood or anything but when this thing bit me all like gushed they did not like clear rubber gloves
That's way cool I didn't know about the bathroom thing I'm going to try that ...And yeah I use a Aspen bedding now for the colonies...Thanks so much for sharing the wisdom I do appreciate it..Take Care & Stay Wild!!!!
Some inexperienced mother AFS or other rodent's for that matter sometimes abandon the runts or even entire litters at times... If you have an experienced mother rodent she may or may not decide too take care of the babies! Worst case scenario she becomes overwhelmed and or eats or abandons it! That being said I've had experienced mother Hamsters or AFS mothers take care of runts before! Keep those mothers alive and well as their valuable!!!
MY ANIMAL HOUSE they sure are my local pet store I’m in Washington as well but on the western half has them . Just making sure I can support them in the best ways you’re videos are great for education and enjoyment
Paper bedding. Not shredded paper. There's a difference. paper bedding absorbs more moister and odor than wood shavings. Also wood shavings isn't good for small rodents due to the dust and some woods are toxic to them
MY ANIMAL HOUSE I feel like iv read all the information available at least twice and never read anything about it so it's not surprising you didn't either. It must be a regular rat thing too I'm guessing because enough people on a Facebook group I'm on all seem well educated on it.

I thought I read that they were mice. Big mice. I'm gonna have to figure out how I misunderstood that. Lol. My brain sometimes.
I think it is called coco block? Freedom Breeder sells it...I think it could be used with your little guys
Thanks for sharing that ...I think I have it worked out now ...Thanks for watching and commenting....Take Care & Stay Wild!!!
I’m looking for some girls for my make fancy mouse but I’ve been having a hell of a time finding non feeders
Lol Fancy or Feeder Rodents are all the same ...Any fancy or pet Rodent can be a Feeder and any Feeder Rodent can be a pet ...Pet stores just call them fancy Rodent because people don't like buying feeders for pets ..But they are all the same
Also the rodents in this video don't make the best pets
How do you train your asf not to chew down all the blocks to the tub floor without really eating them? So i don't have to put down food for them daily? I am using lab cages from basic reptiles. Thank you in advance.
It does happen from time to time ...I think they do it when the younger rats are getting ready to eat on there own so if I have fuzzy or hoppers in the tubs i throw down some from time to time ..
Works for me thanks for watching...Take Care & Stay Wild!!!!
@@MYANIMALHOUSE i am just raising up 2 females and 1 male. They are not even breeding yet.
@@chanhuang614 What are the Protein & Fat Percents on the bag
@@MYANIMALHOUSE i am feeding them mazuri f6 rodent lab blocks as staple diet. I also put down some uncooked veggie pasta, corn on the cob, baby carrots as treats.
So i have not given them any specific protein.
Try shredded cardboard or carefresh, paper based beddings are less likely to cause allergic reactions.
Thanks for the info ...Happy Holidays
What's up! I saw you on my buddy's channel, Dan DEMOGORGUS so I bussing to you too. Trying to build a network. Also bus to my bois Zach in Japan and Laggerdeath7. Their videos are on my channel. They both will support everyone back and actually watch and comment on your videos! Thanks
DAN the man lol yea I'll check them out
Let me ask you this.
I started breeding ASFs,
I have a 1.4 ratio in a 20 gallon long aquarium.
Thanks
That's fine just make sure they are ready to go to the grow out ben's ...About a month old you can separate them
You should look into buying or making a rat rack I have an awesome DIY video on how to build one ...It makes thing so much easier & healthier than tanks
@@MYANIMALHOUSE
Thanks for the reply!
Great video brother , The Rat Rack . Suprised you do not have to separate the Babies .
Well I do after a month or so ...But no they all work together the dad and older babies will help with the new babies ... witch is good less work for me
What ambient temperature should i have for them?
They do well in between 68 to 75
Natural paper bedding is the best bedding for rats and a little bit goes a long way and it keeps the odor down that's why I use I have eight rats in my room and I have no odor two of them I adopted from the Humane Society and the other six I bought from a reptile place that sells them as feeder rats mine are Dumbo eared rats and fancy rats but they're pets and no I don't breed them they're my babies
Thanks for the info
I just got 2 juvenile females and a male... we will see how this goes.
Very cute 😎
Sooo cute!
And mean lol
ASF’s are their own species. They’re not mice or rats. Please don’t call them rats.
I raise mine on a bio active substrate. No smells, they dig for springtails and mealworms that keeps them active and healthy.
They are classified as a mouse and but they are called in African soft Furred Rat
@@MYANIMALHOUSE African soft fur rat
@@melissamyers2670 lol
They dont look aggressiv at all. I had a normal rat that would not allow me to touch her childrens like he did touch those Babys.
(I love snakes but-) I came here for info on taking care of my PET ASFs. Not how to make them perfect feeder rats ;-; aaaa
i'm experimenting with bioactive dirt. i don't want to recommend it yet but it's been going well.
Let me know how it turns out ...Thanks for watching
Some inexperienced mother AFS or other rodent's for that matter sometimes abandon the runts or even entire litters at times... If you have an experienced mother rodent she may or may not decide too take care of the babies! Worst case scenario she becomes overwhelmed and or eats or abandons it! That being said I've had experienced mother Hamsters or AFS mothers take care of runts before! Keep those mothers alive and well as their valuable!!!
Kaytee all natural paper bedding
I use P.J. Murphys sanichips for all my rodents, it's a fine aspen, but I have no probs with asfs on it at all 👍👍
Thanks I have been doing alot of research and it might be to much protein in the diet ... Thanks for watching
Fleece is always the best option
Hemp bedding
Can asf rats spread diseases to u like the urine from the asf spread a virus to u or something
Tractor supply sells their brand name of kiln dried
Thanks ..I'm going to check them out for sure ....Stay Safe!!!!!
MY ANIMAL HOUSE you too I love you’re videos and they make me want to get my own asf colonies
@@quincybrown6793 That's awesome ..Just make sure to check the laws in your state some states are against them
MY ANIMAL HOUSE they sure are my local pet store I’m in Washington as well but on the western half has them . Just making sure I can support them in the best ways you’re videos are great for education and enjoyment

Yesterday's News unscented cat litter is good too
Thanks for watching and commenting!!!!
Soo cute 😍👌
Thanks
Kaytee Pine bedding is kiln dried
Paper bedding. Not shredded paper. There's a difference. paper bedding absorbs more moister and odor than wood shavings. Also wood shavings isn't good for small rodents due to the dust and some woods are toxic to them
Specify what kid of bedding because shredded paper is still bedding. If you mean paper pellets say that.
Can they live with regular rats?
I have never tried lol but who knows if they are young enough I'm sure they could adapt...Thanks for watching!!!!
rabbit food works too for bedding
Carefree or Kaytee Paper bedding, unscented.
The thin fur is probably just them going through a molt. Most rodents go through several molts in the transition from baby to adult.
Thanks for the info
My rat had baby’s we got her pregnant when we adopted her
Thats awesome enjoy your new critters
maybe the thin fur is a gene, line breed it and see if you can produce a hairless lol that sounds like fun to me.
Awesome Idea 💡
@@MYANIMALHOUSE I just learned this thinning is perfectly normal and called molting
@@SwingingPythons Thanks for sharing 👍
MY ANIMAL HOUSE I feel like iv read all the information available at least twice and never read anything about it so it's not surprising you didn't either. It must be a regular rat thing too I'm guessing because enough people on a Facebook group I'm on all seem well educated on it.
I think they are so much cuter too
K but U Rong doe...twice the protein???
my asf rats won't allow paper towels
Do you sale afs rats?
