    Very informative! Thanks for posting this video! I've been trying to do some research on the pros/cons of ASF's.
    I've been breeding regular rats for about a year and I definitely agree with all those points you mentioned with them... I've been thinking about trying to switch my collection over to ASF's once all this Coronavirus stuff blows over a bit and I can go to an expo and get enough to start a few colonies of my own....you've definitely sold me on giving it a shot!!
    Once my Graphic Designer finishes touching up my logo, I'm going to get my stickers made and I'd love to do a swap with you!!

      I agree! I'm willing to give anything a shot! I'd love to cut down on the smell!
      I have 1 ball python that was started out as a hatchling 3 years ago from the breeder I got him from on live mice, and he absolutely refuses anything I've tried with him so far...even live rats....I'm wondering if he would switch to live ASF....guess I'll give it a shot!
      And I'm looking forward to it! I'll let you know as soon as my stickers come in!

    Thanks for the video! How old are the grow out asfs (also size in g) when you feed them to ball pythons over 1000 g?

    • @CDExotics
      @CDExotics  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m not sure how old they are as I wasn’t tracking prior to this one group. I’m planning on doing another video in a month or so once they get big enough to feed off to my larger girls. That video will have all the age and size comparisons with regular rats. I think one I weighed the other day was about 80 grams, I don’t typically weigh stuff when I feed so I don’t have a ton of data on that though.

    • @chanhuang614
      @chanhuang614 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      . Thank you for quick reply. so 80g asf for 1000g or larger ball python?
      my grow outs are like 45-60 g even after about 5-6 weeks. I used to feed f/t rats to my collection. Now switching to asfs alive. I am trying to make sure i am feeding large enough pray item.

    • @CDExotics
      @CDExotics  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I’ll have to weigh a couple tomorrow to be sure on gram size but 80 grams is equivalent to a medium rat so for a 1000 gram snake even a 50-60 gram asf would be sufficient

    • @chanhuang614
      @chanhuang614 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @CDExotics
      @CDExotics  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I use a space heater and a propane heater for heat, depending on how cold it is and I have an ac unit in the wall for summer. Usually it doesn’t get below teens here in the winter although it does occasionally drop a bit lower

    When setting up your breeding tubs (1 male 3 females) have you had any issues with fighting when adding a new member to the enclosure?

    • @CDExotics
      @CDExotics  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      During initial setup I don’t have any issues, once they are setup I don’t add any new ones. I have tried in the past and sometimes if they don’t have babies in the tub it works out and sometimes it doesn’t 🤷🏻‍♀️

  • @zachhamm2105
    @zachhamm2105 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    so I've heard asf are really bad for eating their babies if they get stressed.. if you have to clean their tub and don't have extras how would you do it without having them resort to cannibalism? would putting them in a critter carrier for a very short time work?

    • @CDExotics

    Have you ever though about getting those air deodorizers that automatically spray into the air? My mom used to work in a hospital and they had a pet safe deodorizer that smelled nice. Maybe that in combination with a carbon air filter in the room would really minimize the smell.

    • @CDExotics
      @CDExotics  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, they get a little tight if they all have litters at once but they breed great in there

    • @CDExotics
      @CDExotics  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My new rack is the reptile basics 11 qt tubs and those are my preference for 1.3 as they are a couple inches longer than the v18

    • @banovak611
      @banovak611 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gotcha, I have 2, 5 level concrete mixing tub racks for my regular rats. I just started breeding the ASFs and I have had much more success with them. I did notice a big increase in the ASFs when I switched from mazuri to dog food. Right now I'm using 96qt sterilite tubs and running 1.4 for the ASFs. They are doing great but I worry about chew outs.
      I am thinking about doing a double wide v35 tub rack and calling it good.
      In the video you said about not being able to put the food on the mesh.. is it too big or because of its shape?
      Thanks

    • @CDExotics
      @CDExotics  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      At first they wouldn’t eat the food through the 1/4” mesh but with some persistence I’ve gotten them eat it through the mesh now. All my rats and asf do way better on dog food than mazuri. I originally had my asf breeding colonies in the reptile basics version of the v35 but I felt like I was wasting sooo much bedding

    • @CDExotics
      @CDExotics  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      A lot of people keep rats in this size tub. A lot of people also feed dog food because this brand is nutritionally the same as the rat food that costs twice as much.

    • @lazarusepoo9220
      @lazarusepoo9220 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CDExotics they also eat their babies when strictly on rat food. Low protein = cannibalism
