So, when opening the door and entering the room, you do not turn around and make any such manoeuvre to change hands, you change your hands behind your back always facing the people in the room.

it just occurred to me that the process isn't symmetric between either side of the door, the "room" gets more face time, which i guess makes sense if people tend to be in rooms and mere hallways tend to be on the other side. but if there are two rooms..does one have to make a guess as to which room has the more important people? :-D if the queen was waiting for you in the hallway would you have alter your passage so that you're facing the queen with the maximum amount of time? does anyone leave her in hallways... :-)

Let me try to answer: It is a general rule of politenes to turn your face towards a person and not your back. This way of handling the door ensures, that you open and close the door facing into the room and only spend the least possible amount of time with your back towards it without walking backwards - wich would look irritating in most situations.

I'm writing a scene with Jarvis (of the Marvel Cinematic Universe) conducting a guest to his suite, and I'm trying to figure out which character should enter first. I figure Jarvis would totally know the right move there, but I don't. Do you open the door and step aside for the guest to enter? Do you open the door and flow into the room to hold it open from inside? Do you go in and check the room for dangers first before the guest can enter? What's the actual etiquette?
